The PS5 Slim’s detachable disc drive is a separate module that attaches directly to a compatible console. Its clips or hooks engage the console’s cutouts, while a connector mates with a socket; Sony’s setup process also requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console. The teardown makes the physical connection easier to understand, but it does not reveal the pairing protocol.
What the PS5 Slim teardown shows
In iFixit’s teardown video, published November 15, 2023, a chapter at 00:52 covers removing the PS5 Slim optical drive. The video also looks at other console components, including the outer panels, storage, fan, cooling hardware, board and power supply; Creative Electron is credited for the X-rays. For the drive’s attachment, iFixit’s replacement guide offers a clearer mechanical description: hooks engage cutouts on one side, and the connector slides into a socket on the other. Sony’s user-facing instruction is simpler: align the clips with two marked holes and press until the drive clicks into place. See iFixit’s replacement guide.
This evidence explains how the module physically attaches. It does not establish that the drive can be swapped freely among all PS5 generations, explain the technical pairing process, or show that every drive fault can be fixed by replacing this module alone.

How to install or remove the drive safely
Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive Instruction Manual is the reference for the correct orientation, cover and feet for your console. Use it rather than relying on teardown footage for routine installation.
- Power down and prepare: Turn off the console, unplug the AC cord and other cables, and let it cool. Place it on a soft, flat surface as shown in the manual.
- Remove the relevant parts: Take off the appropriate feet and cover for your console variant. Keep the original cover and feet in case you later remove the drive.
- Discharge static: Touch a grounded metal object before handling the module. Avoid touching either the drive terminal or the matching console connector.
- Attach the drive: Align the clips with the two marked holes, then firmly press until you hear a click.
- Finish assembly: Install the appropriate cover and feet before reconnecting and powering on the console. Sony warns that an incorrectly installed cover can contribute to overheating.
To remove the module, shut down and unplug the console, remove the cover as directed, and lift the drive at its concave section. Then fit the cover and short feet specified for drive-free use. Take care with heat, static, the connector and small parts throughout the process.
Compatibility, pairing and disc support
Compatibility is model-specific. Sony’s support page names the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups, while its Taiwan Store listing identifies accessory model CFI-ZDD1G for PS5 Slim Digital Edition. Check the full CFI model number printed on your console and compare it with the current local Sony listing before buying; product naming, stock and supported revisions can vary by region. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during setup. iFixit gives the same requirement for a replacement drive. The cited sources do not explain how pairing works internally or establish whether an internet connection is needed again after setup.

| Option | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible Digital Edition plus detachable drive | Adds disc use through a separately attached module that can be removed using Sony’s procedure. | Confirm the console’s CFI model group and the locally sold accessory revision; internet is required for setup pairing. |
| PS5 console supplied with an optical drive | The console already includes a drive, rather than requiring the separate module. | Decide whether supported game discs or movie discs are important to you. |
If you own a compatible Digital Edition and want to use supported discs, the Sony CFI-ZDD1 disc drive is the relevant accessory. The teardown helps explain its hooks, clips and connector, but the compatibility check and Sony’s installation manual should guide the purchase and setup.
