For a lower-cost route to the standard PS5 experience—and a disc drive included on the cited 1 TB configuration—choose the PS5 Slim. Choose the PS5 Pro if you want twice the built-in storage and enhanced graphics options in games specifically optimized for Pro, and the higher price makes sense to you. In the United States, PlayStation Direct listed the 1 TB PS5 at $649 and the 2 TB PS5 Pro at $899 on October 4, 2026; those live prices can change. The Pro is digital-only as sold, so disc owners must budget for a separate drive.

Prices are current U.S. PlayStation Direct listings, not fixed MSRP claims; check live new and refurbished inventory and local pricing before buying. Sony notes that system software and functions reserve some SSD capacity, so usable space is lower than the advertised capacity. (Slim listing; Pro listing; Sony storage information)

How much more does the PS5 Pro cost?
At the listed U.S. prices checked October 4, 2026, the Pro costs $250 more than the 1 TB Slim: $899 minus $649. That is a comparison of the two live listed amounts, not a stable Sony price promise. Compare the same condition and configuration: PlayStation Direct showed refurbished Slim model-group consoles separately from its new 1 TB listing. If you want to play discs on Pro, add the price of the separate drive; Sony’s current U.S. drive price is not established here, so check its live listing.
What does the PS5 Pro add?
The Pro’s main distinction is not that every PS5 game automatically runs better; it is the combination of 2 TB built-in storage and enhanced graphics options for games that support PS5 Pro features. Sony lists PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), optimized console performance and advanced ray tracing. Its page describes compatible enhanced games as capable of targeting 60 or up to 120 frames per second with 4K resolution and ray tracing. These are capability claims, not guaranteed settings for every game.

Enhancements vary by title. Sony’s March 16, 2026 PlayStation Blog update described an upgraded PSSR system-software rollout and named supported games including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Crimson Desert. Support can change as games receive updates, so look up the current Pro features for the titles you actually play rather than relying on a launch-era list. Sony also quoted Remedy Entertainment graphics technical director Tatu Aalto describing improved upscaling quality and stability with the upgraded PSSR. That developer comment concerns the technology, not a measured comparison across all games. (Sony’s March 16, 2026 PSSR update)
There is no independent benchmark or controlled image-quality comparison established here. Your experience depends on the game’s implementation and your display, so do not treat the Pro’s advertised capability as a promise of a particular frame rate or visual improvement in every title.
What the PS5 Slim offers
Sony identifies the CFI-2100 family as the Slim model group. Its cited 1 TB configuration provides the standard PS5 feature set, including ray tracing, 4K gaming, HDR and up to 120 fps with 120 Hz output where supported. DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are available in select games. The 1 TB model cited here includes a disc drive, making it the simpler fit if physical games or Blu-ray and DVD playback are important to you. (Sony PS5 features)
The Slim is the practical choice when your priority is playing PS5 games and the standard console experience, rather than paying extra for Pro-specific enhancements. It is also a reasonable choice if your current 4K display meets your needs. Neither console makes a new television a requirement; whether a different display would be worthwhile depends on what your existing screen supports and what you value.
Rank #2

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Disc ownership: account for the Pro’s add-on drive
The PS5 Pro is digital-only out of the box. Sony says its separately sold disc drive supports compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs and Blu-ray/DVD movie playback. Pairing the drive with a Pro during setup requires an internet connection. Check Sony’s manual for the exact disc-format and compatibility limits before relying on a particular movie or game format. (Sony Disc Drive support)
If you already own discs and prefer the Pro’s other features, compare the console plus drive against the Slim’s total cost—not just the two console prices. If you buy games digitally, the Pro’s lack of an included drive may not matter.
Storage: 1 TB or 2 TB, with expansion as an option
The Pro has 2 TB of built-in SSD storage compared with the Slim’s 1 TB. That extra capacity can mean less need to uninstall and reinstall games when maintaining a large installed library, although neither figure is fully available for games because the system reserves space. Both Sony’s CFI-21XX Slim manual and CFI-71XX Pro manual document an M.2 SSD expansion connector. Before choosing an expansion drive, verify Sony’s current compatibility, installation and capacity requirements; no particular third-party model is certified here. (Sony M.2 SSD installation guide)
Which console should you buy?
Choose the PS5 Slim if…
- You want the standard PS5 experience at a lower listed console price.
- You prefer physical games or want a disc drive included on the cited 1 TB configuration.
- You are satisfied with your current screen and do not place much value on Pro-specific game enhancements.
- 1 TB is enough for your installed library, or you are willing to manage storage or consider a compatible M.2 drive later.
Choose the PS5 Pro if…
- You are comfortable with the higher listed price and value 2 TB of built-in storage.
- Games you play have PS5 Pro enhancements you care about; check the current support and settings game by game.
- You want the Pro’s graphics options and have a display that can take advantage of the output features you value.
- You mainly buy digitally, or you have included the separately sold drive and its setup requirements in your decision.
There is no universal winner: the choice turns on the live price, storage needs, disc use, supported games and your display. For most buyers focused on cost and standard PS5 access, the Slim is the straightforward pick; the Pro earns its premium for people who will use its extra storage and game-specific enhancements.
