These steps are PlayStation’s recommended troubleshooting path, not a guaranteed fix for every button fault; if the button still fails, use PlayStation’s repair options before opening the controller.
Check whether the square button fails in one game or everywhere
Square is one of the DualSense controller’s four action buttons, alongside triangle, circle, and cross, as shown in the DualSense instruction manual.

Try the button in another game or on a different game screen. If it fails only in one game, that narrows where the symptom appears, but PlayStation’s published troubleshooting guidance does not establish a game-specific fix. If it fails across games, continue with the controller steps below.

PlayStation’s US troubleshooting guide recommends resetting the controller. The procedure clears the controller’s connection state; it does not establish or repair a particular mechanical cause.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the DualSense from the USB cable.
- On the back of the controller, locate the reset button in the small hole next to the Sony logo.
- Use a pin or similar tool (not included) to press and hold the reset button for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable that came with it, then press the PS button.

Update PS5 and DualSense software
If the square button still does not respond and you can operate the console, update PS5 system software. PlayStation lists this as the next step after resetting, but does not say an update specifically fixes a square-button fault.

DualSense device software updates are included with PS5 system software updates. PlayStation also lists this manual controller-update path: Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. See PlayStation’s controller support page for controller update information.
When the square button still does not work
If resetting and updating do not resolve a persistent button issue, choose PlayStation’s “Button or analog stick issue” support pathway or visit PlayStation Repairs. The official guidance does not identify the cause of a nonresponsive square button or provide a square-button cleaning or teardown procedure. Avoid opening the controller before checking service options and any applicable warranty.

Check warranty and repair eligibility
The DualSense manual states that its one-year limited warranty for defects in material or workmanship, subject to proof of purchase and exclusions, applies only in the United States and Canada. Warranty coverage elsewhere depends on local terms. Check the terms for your region and purchase date, and compare repair eligibility and cost with replacement before deciding.
Consider replacement only if repair is unsuitable
A replacement DualSense may be an option if service is unavailable, ineligible, or not worthwhile for you. The official sources do not establish that replacement is necessary for this symptom; consider it after checking repair options.
