For a system software download that is stuck, first retry it in Downloads/Uploads. If downloads keep failing, Sony documents a manual update using a USB drive. Reinstalling system software is a separate last-resort route because it deletes console data.
What a PS5 update error code means
Sony’s error index groups codes by issue; the word “update” alone does not identify the cause. Search the complete code and use the guidance on that code’s page rather than applying a system-software fix to every error.

A network code points to a connection problem, not necessarily a failed system update. Sony’s index includes network errors as a separate category. The reviewed support guidance does not establish one fix that works for every code; match the complete code to Sony’s entry.
How to retry a stuck system software update
- Press the PS button on your controller.
- Open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system software update and select View Error Info.
- Select Try Again.
This is Sony’s first documented action for a stuck system software download. If downloads repeatedly fail, move to the manual USB update procedure rather than treating a retry as a universal fix.

How to update PS5 system software from a USB drive
Sony’s manual update route requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, a computer to download the official update file, and about 1.1 GB of free space for that file. Use Sony’s PC/Mac and USB update instructions to obtain the current file.
- Turn off the PS5.
- On the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5, then a folder inside it namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s official update file into the
UPDATEfolder and name itPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Start the console in Safe Mode by holding the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device.
If the PS5 does not recognize the file, check that both folder names and the filename use the required uppercase spelling, and confirm that the file is in PS5/UPDATE. Use only Sony’s official update file and stated installation methods; Sony warns against unofficial update data, interrupting an installation, and installing directly before or after a power outage.

Choose the recovery route that fits

Before reinstalling system software
Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console. Do not choose it as though it were just another retry. Sony’s reinstall procedure uses a separate reinstall file, needs about 1.2 GB of free USB space, and is started in Safe Mode with Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Follow Sony’s reinstall instructions carefully and consider whether you can accept the data loss before proceeding.
