Choose the PS5 if you want the best plug-and-play home-console experience, large-screen AAA gaming, PlayStation exclusives, and consistent performance. Choose an ASUS ROG Ally if portability, PC libraries, Game Pass, mods, multiple storefronts, and Windows functionality matter more.

There is an important qualification: “ROG Ally” now refers to several products. This comparison covers the PS5 against the original ROG Ally (2023), ROG Ally X (2024), ROG Xbox Ally (2025), and ROG Xbox Ally X (2025). They are not interchangeable.

PS5 vs ROG Ally at a glance

Device Best for Key characteristics Main weakness
PS5 Home and television gaming Dedicated console, PlayStation ecosystem, strong large-screen performance No built-in display or portable play
ROG Ally (2023) Low-cost portable PC gaming Windows 11, 7-inch 1080p/120Hz display, 16GB RAM, 40Wh battery Small battery and more Windows friction
ROG Ally X (2024) Higher-end conventional Ally gaming Ryzen Z1 Extreme, up to 24GB RAM, 1TB storage, larger battery Costs more and lacks the newer Xbox-oriented interface
ROG Xbox Ally (2025) Current mainstream handheld gaming Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, 60Wh battery Less memory, storage, and performance headroom than the X model
ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) Premium handheld PC gaming Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB RAM, 1TB storage, 80Wh battery High price and still not a replacement for a PS5

The ROG Xbox Ally is listed at $599.99 ERP, while the ROG Xbox Ally X is listed at $999.99 ERP on Xbox’s US product page. These are US price signals observed in August 2026, not permanent worldwide retail prices. Check the official Xbox listing for current regional pricing.

The biggest difference: console versus handheld PC

The PS5 and ROG Ally solve different problems. The PS5 is a fixed-location console designed around a television or monitor, a predictable software environment, and a controller-first interface. The Ally is a compact Windows PC with an integrated screen, battery, desktop capabilities, and configurable performance.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally Gaming Handheld 7" 120Hz, AMD Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB / 512GB
  • [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
  • [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
  • [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
  • [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
  • [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

That makes the PS5 better at delivering a consistent living-room experience. The Ally is better at letting you decide where and how to play. Comparing only processor or graphics figures misses the central choice: home-console performance versus portable PC flexibility.

Which has better graphics and performance?

For demanding current-generation games on a television, the PS5 generally wins. Its games are built for a fixed hardware target and do not require you to manage power limits, drivers, graphics presets, upscaling, or resolution targets. It also produces a more impressive image at normal television viewing distances than a handheld rendering on a seven-inch screen.

The Ally’s integrated graphics are much more power-constrained. Results vary according to the exact Ally model, whether the device is plugged in, the selected power mode, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, driver version, thermals, and available system memory. You may need to lower settings or use FSR to reach a sensible frame rate.

ASUS quotes up to 8.6 teraflops for the original Z1 Extreme Ally, but that figure should not be used as a direct performance comparison with PS5 teraflops. Different architectures, memory systems, clocks, APIs, and power envelopes make cross-platform teraflop comparisons unreliable. The meaningful question is how a particular game performs at a specified resolution and frame-rate target.

  • AAA gaming on a large screen: PS5.
  • Consistent performance without tuning: PS5.
  • Adjustable settings and lower-resolution handheld play: Ally.
  • 120Hz competitive gaming: Ally can be attractive, but the game must actually produce the required frame rate.
  • Mods, community fixes, and graphics customization: Ally.

All Ally models use a 7-inch 1080p display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz; the ROG Xbox Ally models also list FreeSync Premium and 500-nit brightness. A 120Hz panel does not mean demanding games will run at 120 frames per second.

Which has the better game library?

PS5: simpler access to PlayStation games

The PS5 is the obvious choice for PlayStation exclusives and native PS5 releases. Sony also states that PS5 consoles can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, with Game Boost improving frame rates in selected titles. See the official PS5 overview for current compatibility and feature information.

PlayStation is also the more predictable platform for controller support, couch multiplayer, suspend-and-resume behavior, and console-focused game installation. If you already own a large collection of PS4 or PS5 games, staying within that ecosystem may be more valuable than gaining access to a new device.

ROG Ally: broader PC access

Because the Ally runs Windows, it can access Steam, PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA app, Battle.net, and other PC software. ASUS specifically positions the original Ally as a Windows gaming machine supporting multiple storefronts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That breadth is the Ally’s biggest software advantage. You can also use mods, community patches, emulators where legally permitted, desktop applications, keyboards, mice, and external controllers. However, broad Windows compatibility is not the same as perfect handheld compatibility.

Possible problems include anti-cheat restrictions, launcher conflicts, poor controller support, tiny text, keyboard-and-mouse-first interfaces, shader compilation stutter, driver issues, and games that require per-title settings changes. The newer Xbox Ally models improve navigation with an Xbox-oriented handheld interface and an aggregated library, but they remain Windows PCs underneath.

Portability and battery life

This is the clearest ROG Ally victory. A PS5 requires a television or monitor, power, and a fixed setup. An Ally is a self-contained gaming system that can be used in bed, while traveling, during breaks, or in rooms without a console.

The trade-off is weight and charging. The ROG Xbox Ally weighs approximately 670g, while the ROG Xbox Ally X weighs approximately 715g. Both include a 65W charger. Demanding games can still require the charger, and an Ally is not as effortless to carry as a phone or lightweight dedicated handheld.

Battery capacity differs substantially:

  • ROG Ally (2023): 40Wh.
  • ROG Xbox Ally: 60Wh.
  • ROG Xbox Ally X: 80Wh.

The Ally X models are preferable for portable gaming, but a larger battery does not guarantee all-day AAA play. Runtime changes with the game, brightness, refresh rate, resolution, power mode, frame-rate limit, Wi-Fi activity, background Windows processes, battery health, and drivers. Avoid treating any single battery-life number as universal.

Ease of use

The PS5 wins for buyers who want to connect a console, sign in, install a game, choose a performance or quality mode when available, and start playing. Maintenance is comparatively limited.

The Ally behaves more like a small gaming laptop. You may need to update Windows, ASUS software, and AMD drivers; manage several launchers; configure controller mappings; adjust power modes; solve sleep or display issues; and tune individual games. Windows also makes text entry and some menus awkward on a small touchscreen.

The Xbox Ally interface reduces some of this friction by emphasizing handheld-friendly Xbox navigation and a combined library. It does not eliminate PC-style maintenance, launcher behavior, or compatibility problems.

Storage, docking, and upgrades

The original Ally commonly includes 512GB of PCIe 4.0 storage and a microSD card slot. The ROG Xbox Ally has a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD, while the Xbox Ally X has a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD. Both support microSD expansion, and the newer models are designed to make SSD upgrades easier.

MicroSD is useful for expanding a library, but it is not identical to fast internal storage in every PC game. Loading can be slower, and some demanding games may behave better from the internal SSD. The original Ally’s card-reader history has also been a reported ownership concern; without a verified current failure rate, it should not be described as a quantified defect affecting every unit.

The PS5 also uses internal SSD storage, with usable capacity below the advertised figure because system software occupies space. Expansion requirements vary by PS5 model, so verify Sony’s current support documentation before buying an SSD.

The PS5 is the better dedicated television device. An Ally can connect to a monitor or TV through a USB-C dock, but a practical docked setup may require a dock, suitable power delivery, an HDMI cable, and possibly an external controller, keyboard, and mouse. Docking is useful flexibility, not an automatic replacement for a PS5.

Can the ROG Ally replace a PS5?

Not for native PS5 gaming. The Ally cannot run PS5 games directly. It can access some PlayStation experiences in three ways:

  1. PS Remote Play: streams games from your PS5 to the Ally over a network.
  2. Cloud streaming: where supported by the relevant service and region.
  3. PC versions: for games that are separately available on Windows.

PS Remote Play requires a PS5 or PS4 and depends on network latency, Wi-Fi quality, upload performance from the home connection, and the game being played. It makes the Ally a useful companion to a PS5, but it does not turn the handheld into a portable PS5.

Cost of ownership

Hardware price alone does not determine value. Include the cost of games, online services, storage, accessories, and your existing library.

  • PS5: consider the exact edition, games, PlayStation Plus, additional SSD storage, and extra DualSense controllers.
  • ROG Ally: consider a case, microSD card or SSD upgrade, dock, second charger, and the time required for setup and troubleshooting.
  • Game Pass: the ROG Xbox Ally pages state that three months of Game Pass Premium is included, subject to eligibility and redemption terms. Plan names, prices, catalogues, and benefits can change; check the official Game Pass page.
  • PlayStation Plus: online multiplayer and catalog access depend on the game and subscription tier. Check current PlayStation Plus details.

A PC gamer with a large Steam library may get exceptional value from an Ally. A PlayStation owner with many purchased games may spend less by staying with PS5. Neither platform is always cheaper.

Which ROG Ally should you buy?

Buy the PS5 if…

  • You mainly play at home.
  • You want the best large-screen presentation.
  • You prioritize PlayStation exclusives.
  • You want stable performance with minimal troubleshooting.
  • You regularly play local multiplayer.
  • You already own a substantial PlayStation library.

Buy the original ROG Ally only if…

  • You find a substantial clearance or used-market discount.
  • You specifically want a low-cost Windows handheld.
  • You accept the 40Wh battery, 16GB memory, and greater maintenance.

Do not use its historical launch price as its current value. ASUS originally listed the Z1 Extreme version at $699 and the Z1 version at $599, but those are launch figures rather than guaranteed 2026 prices.

Buy the ROG Ally X if…

  • You want the conventional ASUS Ally design with more battery, memory, and storage.
  • You play demanding games away from a charger.
  • You can justify paying more than clearance pricing for the original model.
  • You do not specifically need the newer Xbox-oriented interface.

Buy the ROG Xbox Ally if…

  • You want a current mainstream handheld with Xbox-style navigation.
  • You value PC Game Pass and multiple PC storefronts.
  • You prefer a lower price to maximum performance, storage, and battery capacity.

Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X if…

  • You want the strongest current ROG Xbox handheld.
  • You value 24GB memory, 1TB storage, and an 80Wh battery.
  • You regularly play demanding games away from home.
  • You can justify its listed $999.99 US ERP.

Buy both if…

You want native PlayStation gaming at home and PC gaming while traveling. For an existing PS5 owner, an Ally is usually a complement: it adds portable PC access and Remote Play rather than replacing the PlayStation ecosystem.

Final verdict

The PS5 is better for most home-console buyers. It delivers stronger large-screen gaming, simpler setup, PlayStation exclusives, and more predictable performance.

The ROG Ally is better for portable PC gamers who value Steam, Game Pass, multiple storefronts, mods, emulation, desktop functionality, and control over graphics settings. The ROG Xbox Ally models improve the handheld experience, while the X versions offer more battery, memory, and storage, but they remain more demanding to manage than a PS5.
