For PS5 vs. PS5 Digital Edition, the deciding question is whether you want to play games from discs. Choose the standard PS5 if you own, borrow, collect, or expect to buy compatible PS5 or PS4 game discs—or want to use supported disc video. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you’re happy to download games from PlayStation Store. The standard model also supports digital games, so its disc drive adds an option rather than requiring you to use discs.
What’s different between the PS5 and Digital Edition?
The standard PS5 includes a disc drive; the Digital Edition is sold without one. Both support digital games, but only the standard model can read compatible game discs out of the box. Sony describes the Digital Edition as “An all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” Sony’s US PS5 comparison explains the console options.
| Feature | PS5 with disc drive | PS5 Digital Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs | Supported | No included drive; a separate drive works only with specified newer model groups |
| Digital games | Supported | Supported; games are downloaded |
| Listed US storage capacity | 1 TB | 825 GB |
| Supported disc video | Can play supported disc formats | Requires an optional compatible drive on supported models |
Storage figures are Sony’s listed US capacities, not promises of fully available space. The PS5 manual notes that system software and other functions reserve some SSD capacity, so usable space is lower. Sony’s storage guidance covers managing console storage.
Which version fits how you play?
Choose the disc-drive PS5 if physical games matter to you
- You already own compatible PS5 or PS4 game discs.
- You borrow, trade, collect, or expect to buy games on disc.
- You want the option to play supported disc video.
- You also buy digital games: the disc model supports downloads as well as discs.
Choose the Digital Edition if you’re content with downloads
- You plan to buy games digitally through PlayStation Store.
- You don’t need to use game discs or supported disc video.
- You accept that accessing physical discs later means buying a compatible separate drive, and only if your console model supports it.
Neither edition is a universal long-term money saver. The better value depends on your buying habits, game prices, sales, and bundles; available evidence does not establish a general cost winner.

Can you add a disc drive to the Digital Edition later?
Only certain newer Digital Edition models support Sony’s separately sold detachable drive. Sony identifies Digital Edition model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, as well as PS5 Pro, as compatible; this is not a universal retrofit for older Digital Editions. Check the console’s exact CFI model number against Sony’s drive setup compatibility guidance before buying. Pairing the drive with a compatible console during setup requires an internet connection. Sony’s detachable drive product page lists the accessory and its supported consoles.

- Check the regional listing. Sony’s listed storage capacities here are for the US; configurations may differ by region. Confirm the exact console listing and included contents with the seller.
- If considering an add-on drive, verify the CFI number first. Confirm that the exact Digital Edition model is in Sony’s compatible model groups, and plan for the internet connection needed during pairing.
