Choose PS5 Pro if you want the chance of better visuals or performance in games that explicitly support its enhancements, and your display can show the difference. Choose a standard PS5 if value matters more than those game-specific upgrades. For Grand Theft Auto VI, PlayStation lists both consoles and labels the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced”—but has not published a Pro-specific resolution or frame-rate target, so the label alone is not a performance guarantee.
What the PS5 Pro upgrade can—and cannot—promise
Sony promotes PS5 Pro features including PSSR upscaling, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame rates. These are possibilities for supported games, not a universal setting that improves every PS5 title. Sony says features are available only in selected games enhanced for Pro, vary by game, and may require a compatible display. Check Sony’s PS5 Pro feature details alongside each game’s own information.

PSSR is an image-upscaling technology; it should not be confused with a promise that a game renders natively at a particular resolution. On February 27, 2026, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. That dated company statement indicates adoption across titles, not a current count or a guarantee about any particular open-world game. Read Cerny’s statement on PlayStation.Blog.

PlayStation’s US listing says Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PS5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026, and marks it “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” The page describes a single-player game set in Leonida, including Vice City. See the official PlayStation listing.

- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
The listing does not give a Pro-specific resolution, frame-rate mode, ray-tracing level, or side-by-side comparison with standard PS5. The badge confirms that PlayStation lists the game as enhanced; it does not establish what the enhancement will look like or how it will perform. If GTA VI is your main reason to upgrade and exact performance matters to you, wait for game-specific details or reliable launch testing rather than buying on an assumed frame rate or resolution.
How to compare the consoles for the games you will actually play
| Factor | Why it matters | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Games | Pro features depend on support and implementation by each game. | Look for an official PS5 Pro Enhanced designation and game-specific details. Do not infer a particular resolution or frame rate from the badge. |
| Visual and performance priorities | Supported titles may use PSSR, ray tracing, or higher or more consistent frame rates, but not necessarily all of them. | Pro is more compelling if you value these options and the games you play implement them well. |
| Display | Some advertised features require a compatible display. | Check your screen’s resolution and refresh-rate capabilities against the specific game feature you want to use. |
| Physical media | PS5 Pro is sold as an all-digital console; its disc drive is separate. | Include the compatible drive in your budget if you use disc games or want disc playback. Confirm the current accessory listing and compatibility. |
| Storage and total cost | Sony’s US Direct listing describes PS5 Pro with 2TB storage. It also says the vertical stand and disc drive are sold separately. | Compare current local prices for both consoles, then add only accessories you actually need. Prices, bundles, stock, and accessory listings can vary. |
For physical-media buyers, Sony’s detachable-drive manual lists PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, and DVD formats. Check the current compatibility and product information before purchasing a drive. Consult Sony’s disc-drive instructions.

Other open-world examples show why support is title-specific
PS5 Pro support is not limited to one announced game, but examples should not be treated as promises about future titles. In a September 24, 2024 PlayStation Blog feature, Ubisoft Technology Director Pierre Fortin described intended use of ray-traced global illumination and PSSR for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. That launch-era description is not a current performance measurement. Check the game’s current listing and patch notes for its present support details.

Quick Recap
A practical PS5 vs. PS5 Pro decision checklist
- List the open-world games you expect to play. Separate games with confirmed Pro support from games for which support or technical details have not been announced.
- Check the exact benefit, not just the badge. Look for developer or publisher details about resolution, frame-rate options, ray tracing, or PSSR. If those details are absent, treat the benefit as unknown.
- Match the feature to your display. Verify that your screen supports the relevant resolution or refresh rate; a feature you cannot use may matter less in your decision.
- Add your real accessory needs. Include a disc drive if you rely on physical games or movie discs, and account for a stand only if you need one.
- Compare current regional totals. Check the local prices of both consoles and required accessories rather than relying on an old price or a different market’s listing.
- If one unreleased game is driving the purchase, set a decision date. Recheck its release date, official technical details, and credible launch coverage before paying extra for a performance outcome that has not been specified.
