Choose PS5 Pro if you want the best image-quality and frame-rate options available in games specifically enhanced for it, and your budget and display make those upgrades worthwhile. Choose the standard PS5 if your priority is playing the same PS5 library for less. Pro support is game-specific: Sony says features vary by game, so an “enhanced” label is not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate, or visible improvement.
What changes when you choose PS5 Pro?
Both consoles play PS5 games. The Pro adds features such as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) image reconstruction, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame-rate options in supported titles. Sony does not promise that every game uses all of those features, or that every game will look or run better on Pro. Check the details for each game you care about on Sony’s PS5 Pro features page.

PSSR can help a game produce a sharper or more stable image, but what you see depends on the game’s implementation and display. In February 2026, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 titles; that was a dated count, not a current total. A later version began rolling out to named games. Sony said Resident Evil Requiem was the first to use the more advanced version, then listed titles including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Crimson Desert in its February 27 announcement and March 16 follow-up. Sony cautions that results vary by game.
Developer descriptions can explain a specific implementation, but they are not independent comparisons. For example, Housemarque said Saros uses updated PSSR and dynamic resolution to maintain a stable frame rate in hectic combat, describing the result as a sharper image. That is evidence about Saros, not a guarantee for other games; see the PlayStation.Blog feature article.

How to judge Pro support in upcoming games
Sony’s “PS5 Pro Enhanced Games” category is useful for finding games designated as enhanced, but the label alone does not quantify the upgrade. Sony’s Marvel’s Wolverine page, for example, labels the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced”; that confirms the designation, not a measured performance difference. Store listings change, and a title may be released or upcoming depending on when you check.
- Confirm the game and platform. Check the game’s current PlayStation page for PS5 availability and release status.
- Look for specific Pro details. Prefer developer or Sony descriptions of resolution and frame-rate modes, ray tracing, PSSR support, and trade-offs. A Pro-enhanced badge without those details does not establish the size of the benefit.
- Match the mode to your screen and priorities. A game’s higher-resolution or higher-refresh-rate options matter only if your display can show them, and the game must implement the relevant feature. A new TV is not required to play PS5 games.
- Recheck close to purchase. Game features, release information, and store listings can change. If the technical details remain unpublished, treat the benefit as unknown rather than assuming it from the label.

Capacity figures above are those listed on Sony’s US buying page; usable storage can differ from the listed capacity. The same page describes the compatible removable drive for Pro and compatible slim Digital Edition systems. Sony says it plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs, and that an internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during setup. The $699.99 figure was Pro’s US launch MSRP in 2024. It does not tell you today’s price or the current gap between consoles.
Which console fits your priorities?
Choose PS5 Pro if
- You have specific upcoming or current games with Pro features you want to use.
- You value the strongest available image-quality or frame-rate options in those supported games and accept that improvements vary.
- The higher listed storage capacity is useful for your installed library.
- You have a compatible display that can show the visual or refresh-rate features you value, or you are content with the improvements available on your current screen.
Choose standard PS5 if
- Your main goal is access to the PS5 library, not title-specific Pro upgrades.
- The extra cost of Pro does not make sense for the games you plan to play.
- You want a disc model without adding a separate drive to the purchase.
Factor in discs, storage, display, and price
If you own PS5 or Blu-ray discs, compare the cost of Pro plus its compatible drive against the standard disc model in your region. Pro does not include a drive. If you buy games digitally, that particular add-on may not matter to you.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Pro’s 2 TB listed capacity may reduce the need to expand storage, but the number of installed games depends on their sizes and the console’s usable space. An M.2 SSD is an optional consideration for a large library; check Sony’s current compatibility guidance before choosing a model. Likewise, a 4K or 120 Hz television can be relevant to supported features but is not a prerequisite for playing PS5 games.
