The main choice is whether you want a built-in disc drive, the Slim’s reduced footprint, or the option to add a drive later to a compatible Slim Digital model. Check the exact console SKU and local storage listing before buying.
PS5 vs PS5 Slim at a glance
| Factor | Original PS5 | PS5 Slim |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Sony states that the original disc and Digital models have identical performance outside the disc drive. No independent Slim-versus-original performance benchmark is established by the cited Sony materials. | Sony describes the Slim as carrying the same PS5 technology features. Its launch specifications list the same CPU and GPU figures for Slim disc and Digital variants; they do not establish that Slim runs games faster. |
| Size and weight | Varies by original model; the figures below are not a direct comparison with every original SKU. | Sony’s 2023 launch figures: disc model approximately 358 × 96 × 216 mm and 3.2 kg; Digital approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm and 2.6 kg. Dimensions exclude projecting parts. |
| Disc options | Available with a built-in drive or as Digital Edition without one. | Available with a built-in drive or as Digital Edition without one. A compatible detachable drive is sold separately for specified Slim Digital model groups. |
| Storage | Confirm the capacity for the exact model and market. | Varies by listing, model and market; do not assume every current Slim Digital console has the same capacity. |
Does the PS5 Slim have better performance?
There is no basis in the cited official specifications for buying a Slim on the expectation of faster frame rates, shorter loading times or improved graphics. Sony introduced it in 2023 as a smaller form factor and describes it as retaining the same PS5 technology features. Its launch spec table gives the Slim disc and Slim Digital variants identical CPU and GPU figures.
Sony’s FAQ says the original PS5 and original PS5 Digital Edition have identical performance outside the existence of a disc drive. That statement is about those two original models, not a head-to-head Slim benchmark. The cited materials do not provide independent comparative tests of game performance, acoustics, thermals or loading times.
How much smaller and lighter is the Slim?
Sony’s 2023 launch announcement lists the Slim disc console at approximately 358 × 96 × 216 mm and 3.2 kg, and the Slim Digital console at approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm and 2.6 kg. The measurements exclude projecting parts. The Digital version is narrower because it does not include the disc drive.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony said the new design reduced volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% and 24% compared with the previous models. Those are Sony’s comparisons from the launch announcement, not independent measurements. If shelf space, moving the console, or fitting it into a media unit matters, compare the dimensions of the exact original and Slim models you are considering.
Disc drive: built in, optional, or absent
Choose a disc-equipped PS5 if you use physical media
A disc-equipped PS5—original or Slim—can play physical PS5 and PS4 games and supported optical movie formats. Sony’s 2020 FAQ says the original Digital Edition cannot read discs. A Digital console therefore requires downloads for games and cannot play optical movie discs.

Slim Digital can take a compatible add-on drive
Sony lists a detachable drive for Slim Digital CFI-2000/2100 model groups. The accessory supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD discs, and an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. Check the console’s model group before purchasing; the compatibility listing does not make the drive an option for the original PS5 Digital Edition.
Consider the total cost of the Digital console plus the separately sold drive against the price of a disc-equipped console in your market. The detachable option is useful if you want to begin with downloads and retain a route to physical media, but it adds an accessory purchase and a setup requirement.

Storage: verify the exact regional SKU
Storage listings are not uniform enough to treat one number as a universal Slim specification. Sony’s 2023 announcement stated 1TB for both Slim launch variants. The PlayStation Canada page checked in 2026 lists 1TB for the disc console and 825GB for the Digital Edition. These figures differ by listing, model or market; use the current local product page and exact SKU rather than assuming the launch announcement applies to every console sold today.

Slim consoles include horizontal stand feet. Sony sells the vertical stand separately and lists compatibility with original CFI-1000 and Slim CFI-2000 groups. If you plan to place the console upright, check the stand’s compatibility and include its separate cost in your decision.

Which PS5 should you buy?
- Choose a disc-equipped model if you own physical PS4 or PS5 games, buy used or discounted discs, borrow games, or watch movies on optical discs. Pick original or Slim based on footprint, exact configuration and local price.
- Choose Slim Digital if your library is all-download and you value the smaller design. If you may want physical media later, verify that the specific console is in a compatible model group and compare the combined console-and-drive cost.
- Choose the Slim over an original model for size and weight, not an assumed boost to game performance.
- Compare like with like on price: same market, drive configuration and bundle. Historical launch prices do not establish today’s best value, and current offers vary by retailer and date.
