The PS5 uses an AMD Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads, running at a variable frequency of up to 3.5 GHz. Sony has not published a PS6 CPU specification in the sources available here, so any claim about its architecture or performance is speculation. If a future console delivers more CPU throughput, it could help games limited by processor work—but it would not guarantee higher frame rates or better graphics across the board.
What CPU does the PS5 have?
Sony’s March 2020 hardware announcement specifies an x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads, at a variable frequency of up to 3.5 GHz. The announcement also lists an RDNA 2-based graphics engine, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory with 448 GB/s bandwidth, and an 825 GB SSD with 5.5 GB/s raw read bandwidth. Those other components matter: a game’s performance is not determined by its CPU alone. Sony’s PS5 hardware announcement is the source for the original system specifications.

Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual also identifies that model family’s processor as a custom single-chip design with an x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, 8 cores and 16 threads. Its storage details are specific to those models, and the manual notes that information may change without notice; they should not be treated as specifications for every PS5 model. Sony’s hardware manuals provide the model-family reference.
Has Sony confirmed the PS6 CPU?
No PS6 CPU microarchitecture, core or thread count, clock speed, cache, power target, or performance figure is established by the sources cited here. In particular, Zen 5, Zen 6, a projected core count, or a percentage uplift should not be presented as a confirmed PS6 specification.

A 2025 PC Gamer report covers Sony architect Mark Cerny and AMD executive Jack Huynh discussing future technologies, including Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression. The report relates those technologies to graphics processing, ray tracing or path tracing, and memory bandwidth; it does not specify a PS6 CPU or establish a retail-console configuration.
What could a faster CPU change in games?
A CPU handles work such as game simulation, AI decisions, animation, and coordinating tasks across the system. If a game is CPU-limited, additional processor throughput could give developers more room to increase simulation complexity, improve frame-rate consistency, or pursue higher frame-rate targets.

That is a conditional possibility, not a PS6-specific promise. The visible result would depend on the eventual console design, the game engine and workload, GPU and memory limits, power and thermal constraints, and how developers choose to use the available capacity. A stronger CPU by itself does not ensure higher resolution, more detailed visuals, or a higher frame rate in every game.

AMD’s Zen architecture page lists approximately 15% IPC improvement for consumer Ryzen Zen 2 over the preceding generation. IPC means instructions per cycle: it describes work completed per clock under the relevant architecture comparison, not total game performance. AMD does not state a publication year on the cited page for this figure. AMD’s Zen architecture page presents it as a consumer Ryzen generational statistic, not a PS5 benchmark.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
It would therefore be incorrect to translate that number into a claim that PS5 games run 15% faster, or to apply it as an estimate of PS6 performance. A console-to-console gaming comparison requires confirmed configurations and game-level results; an architecture statistic alone cannot supply either.
What PS5 backward compatibility shows—and what it does not
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. It also says selected titles may benefit from Game Boost with higher or smoother frame rates, while warning of possible errors, unexpected behavior, and feature limitations; Sony lists PS4-only exceptions as well. The PS5 backward-compatibility guidance illustrates that how older games behave depends on title-specific software and support as well as hardware. It does not establish what PS6 compatibility policy will be.

- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
What a meaningful PS5-versus-PS6 comparison needs
Once Sony confirms PS6 hardware and games can be tested, a useful comparison should look beyond CPU branding. Relevant evidence would include:
- CPU microarchitecture and configuration, including core and thread counts and operating frequencies.
- Game performance in real titles, especially frame-rate consistency and results in workloads shown to be CPU-limited.
- The contribution of the GPU, memory, power and thermal limits, and software optimization.
- Compatibility behavior on a title-by-title basis rather than assumptions based on a hardware label.
Until those details and results exist, there is no defensible numerical PS5-to-PS6 CPU or gaming-performance gain to report.
