There is no universal winner between PS5 and Xbox Series X. Choose PS5 if the games and library you care about are on PlayStation; choose Xbox Series X if Xbox’s four-generation game compatibility and Microsoft ecosystem matter more to you. Before deciding, compare the specific games you want, the edition you need, your display, and current local prices—those details matter more than a single hardware number.
Start with the games and library you want
Both consoles offer broad catalogs, but the better fit depends on the titles you actually plan to play and where you already own them. Check each game individually: availability changes over time, and a title appearing on one platform does not guarantee it is exclusive to that platform. A comparison updated in May 2025 noted changes as Xbox games came to PS5, so older exclusivity lists can be out of date (What Hi-Fi).
If you have a substantial library or established account on one platform, include that in the decision. The practical value of a console is not just its new releases; it is also the games you can continue playing and the ecosystem you already use.
Backward compatibility and physical games
Xbox Series X
Microsoft says Xbox Series X is compatible with thousands of games across four generations of Xbox (Microsoft). That makes it a strong option if you want to revisit older Xbox titles, but verify compatibility for the specific game and format you own.

PS5
Sony says more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5 (Sony). PS5 does not support PS3 discs, according to PlayStation Support; check the support page for the compatibility details that apply to a particular title and format (PlayStation Support).
Physical media needs depend on the console edition. If you own discs or expect to buy used or physical games, confirm that the exact edition you are considering includes a disc drive. Do not assume every PS5 or Series X listing has the same configuration.

Hardware specifications are not a game-by-game verdict
Microsoft lists Xbox Series X at 12 teraflops; Sony’s 2020 launch announcement listed the original PS5 at 10.3 TFLOPS. Those are vendor-published hardware specifications, not a direct measurement of frame rate, resolution, or visual quality in a particular game. Actual performance depends on how each title is built and configured.
Sony’s 2020 launch specifications also listed 16 GB of GDDR6 memory and an 825 GB SSD for the original PS5. Newer PS5 editions differ in storage capacity, so do not treat that launch-model figure as a specification for every PS5 now sold (Sony Interactive Entertainment).

Check your display before buying around 4K or 120 Hz
Both console makers advertise high-resolution and high-refresh-rate capabilities, but support varies by game and display. A console’s maximum advertised output does not mean every game will run at that resolution and refresh rate simultaneously.
- Check whether the games you play offer the resolution or high-refresh-rate mode you want.
- Confirm your TV or monitor supports the required resolution, refresh rate, and connection on the input you will use.
- Compare the exact console edition and game mode rather than relying on a general “4K” or “120 Hz” label.
Storage expansion and peripherals
Xbox Series X storage
Microsoft identifies its Storage Expansion Card as an option that provides additional storage at the same performance as the console’s custom SSD (Microsoft). Check the current product and compatibility details before buying an expansion.

PS5 storage and accessories
For PS5, check Sony’s current M.2 NVMe SSD installation requirements and confirm that a particular drive meets them before purchase. Requirements can include details that are easy to miss when shopping by capacity alone. PlayStation also advises checking with the accessory manufacturer about compatibility for a specific peripheral and title (PlayStation Support).

Prices, bundles, editions, and stock vary by region and seller. Use a live comparison for the country where you are buying, and make sure you are comparing equivalent editions. Sony directs buyers to retailers for current availability and pricing (Sony). A US Microsoft Store listing displayed $799.99 and was out of stock when checked; that volatile listing is not a general price for Xbox Series X or a reliable comparison across markets (Microsoft Store).

Do not use launch prices or regional examples from older comparisons as today’s price. For example, What Hi-Fi’s comparison was updated in May 2025 and its pricing examples are historical relative to 2026 (What Hi-Fi).
Which one should you buy?
- Choose PS5 if the games you want and the library you already own center on PlayStation.
- Choose Xbox Series X if Xbox’s four-generation compatibility and Microsoft ecosystem are more valuable to you.
- Compare the exact editions if physical discs, storage, or a particular bundle will affect how you use the console.
- Check your display and local price before paying extra for a capability or bundle you may not use.
There is no evidence here for a universal winner based on sales or market share, and no single specification settles the choice. Let your games, existing library, edition requirements, and current local deal determine the purchase.
