There is no verified, universal “best” poison in Oblivion Remastered. The strongest practical choice depends on your Alchemy mastery, the ingredients you can spare, your target, and your combat-damage settings. For general use, build a damage-focused poison with several useful negative effects; against mages, favor spell disruption; against a dangerous single enemy, use control effects if your character can make them. The named builds Fatal Flask, Root Beer, Dulling Draught, Droopy Draft, and Scorching Snow are recommendations from Land3r’s May 15, 2025 guide—not a proven ranking with independently verified recipes.
Choose a poison by the problem you need to solve
A poison is most useful when its effects fit the target and the way you fight. A complicated recipe is not automatically better: ingredient availability, effects your character can identify, and the enemy’s threat all matter. No cited source provides controlled damage comparisons across recipes, targets, or difficulty settings, so treat these as practical roles rather than a DPS ranking.

Before choosing, consider your Alchemy mastery and known ingredient properties, how readily you can replace the ingredients, how many negative effects are useful against this enemy, and which apparatuses you have. Combat-damage settings matter too: Bethesda says Update 1.2 added separate settings for Player Combat Damage and Enemy Combat Damage, so an enemy’s effective threat—and the value of disrupting it—can vary with your settings. Bethesda’s Update 1.2 notes describe those options.
What the named poison builds are—and are not
Land3r’s May 15, 2025 guide names five builds: Fatal Flask, Root Beer, Dulling Draught, Droopy Draft, and Scorching Snow. Its description discusses poisons with four, five, or six effects, including builds for Expert or Master play, casters, and damage-focused or burdensome encounters. These are useful starting points if you are looking for multi-effect build ideas, but they should not be treated as a tested ranking.

The accessible guide description does not provide a dependable full list of ingredients and effect values. That means the names alone are not enough to reproduce the builds safely: do not infer a recipe, damage total, duration, or best-use case from a name. How poison crafting works
Match ingredient effects
Alchemy governs the creation of potions and poisons, according to Bethesda Support. The official Oblivion PC manual says you need at least a mortar and pestle and at least two ingredients that share an effect. If the finished brew has only negative effects, it is a poison. If it includes a beneficial effect—even alongside negative effects—it is classified as a potion instead. Check every effect in a candidate combination before crafting if your goal is specifically a poison.

Use the apparatuses that improve the result
The mortar and pestle determines initial strength. The calcinator increases the magnitude and duration of all effects. The retort affects positive potion effects, not poisons, and the alembic reduces negative side effects in potions, not poisons. For a poison-focused setup, the mortar and pestle are the minimum; the calcinator is the additional apparatus described as improving poison effects in the manual.
Equip and apply the poison
Once crafted, equip the poison and apply it to the readied weapon, as described in the manual. The recipe is only useful if you remember to ready the weapon you intend to coat.

How Alchemy mastery changes your options
A Remaster-specific Steam community guide reports that Alchemy mastery affects which ingredient properties you recognize and how many simultaneous effects you can handle. It lists the following bands, but cautions that Remaster mechanics may differ from the original game and remain under review. Treat the thresholds as guide-reported, not as independently verified build requirements; check your in-game skill description before committing rare ingredients. These are thresholds reported by the community guide, not measured poison-performance results. In particular, do not assume that a build described as Expert or Master is attainable or effective at lower mastery simply because you know some of its ingredients.
A practical way to select your next poison
- Identify the target’s danger. If it is primarily a caster, look for spell disruption; if one enemy is threatening at close range, consider control; if you need a general weapon coating, focus on damage effects.
- Check what you can actually identify and craft. Compare the effects you can see on ingredients with your mastery. Do not build around an effect you cannot confirm.
- Protect scarce ingredients. The community guide warns that some ingredients are finite. Prefer a repeatable combination for routine fights and reserve costly or hard-to-replace ingredients for encounters where their effects matter.
- Confirm the item will be a poison. Make sure the combination produces only negative effects; one beneficial effect changes the result into a potion.
- Account for your settings and equipment. Combat-damage settings alter the encounter context, while apparatus quality—especially a calcinator—can affect the poison’s strength or duration.
The most dependable low-investment approach is not a particular unverified recipe: it is to use two ingredients with a shared negative effect you can identify, confirm the resulting brew contains no positive effect, and save elaborate combinations for when your mastery and supply support them.
