There is no universal winner: buy a PS5 if PlayStation exclusives, DualSense features or your PS4 library matter most; choose Xbox Series X if you want access to a broad older Xbox library, Smart Delivery or a UHD Blu-ray player. If you are deciding whether to buy now or wait, no next-generation launch date is confirmed by the sources available as of October 7, 2026. Let the games you want and the current prices in your region—not a predicted launch window—drive the decision.
Should you buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X now?
Start with the games you want to play and the library you already own. Sony says PS5 supports the PS4 game library, while Microsoft says Xbox Series X is compatible with thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Neither claim means every game from an earlier generation works, so check specific titles before buying.
For a quick decision, compare the two systems on these points:
- Must-play games: choose the console with the games you most want, including PlayStation exclusives if those are a priority.
- Existing library: check which of your digital purchases and discs work on the new console.
- Physical media: consider whether you want to play discs, including older games or Blu-ray movies.
- Subscriptions: compare the current local price and included games for the plans you would actually use.
- Price and timing: weigh today’s local console prices against how long you are willing to wait for an unannounced successor.
Sony’s PS5 page and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X page describe each platform’s features and libraries. Availability and product configurations can differ by region.

Which game library fits you better?
PS5: a natural fit for PlayStation games and PS4 continuity
If the games you want are PlayStation releases, or you already own PS4 games, PS5 is the straightforward place to start. Sony says PS5 supports the PS4 library. Check individual game listings for compatibility and any edition-specific details rather than assuming every PS4 title or accessory works identically.
Sony also offers PlayStation Plus plans with a PS5 and PS4 game catalogue that changes monthly. A subscription can be useful if the games currently included match what you want to play; the catalogue is not a permanent promise that any particular title will remain available.
Xbox Series X: broader stated compatibility across Xbox generations
Microsoft describes Series X as compatible with thousands of games across four Xbox generations. That breadth can make it appealing if your existing purchases or favorite older games are on Xbox, but compatibility is not universal. Check Microsoft’s compatibility information for the exact title and format you own.

Microsoft also promotes Smart Delivery, which provides the appropriate version of supported games across Xbox One and Series X|S consoles. It is a feature for supported titles, not a guarantee that every game has a free upgrade or identical entitlement.
How much should backward compatibility influence your choice?
Make a short list of games you already own, then verify them one by one. For each title, check whether it works on the console, whether your copy is digital or disc-based, and whether any upgrade or separate purchase is required.
For Xbox backward-compatible games that use a disc, Microsoft says the disc must remain in the drive to play. The disc acts as proof of ownership; compatibility does not turn every physical copy into a digital entitlement. Microsoft has also described a disc entitlement feature as an effort to give players more confidence that games they buy remain with them, while noting that not every title would be available at launch. The announcement is not evidence that every disc has become a permanent digital license.

On PlayStation, Sony’s product information says PS5 supports PS4 games. Confirm whether the specific games you care about are supported and whether your PS5 configuration can read your discs.
Do you need a disc drive?
The standard PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive. Sony’s US Direct listing describes a 1 TB PS5 model with a drive, while Microsoft says Series X includes a UHD Blu-ray player. Check the exact model sold in your market before ordering; configurations and availability may vary.

Sony currently states that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase in digital format only, and that discs for games released before that date can continue to be played on the console. This is Sony’s stated policy on its PS5 page, not a statement about Xbox or a guarantee about other retailers’ future practices. Recheck the notice before making a purchase decision.

Compare the plans available in your country and the specific games included when you are ready to subscribe. Sony describes PlayStation Plus as a set of membership plans with a changing PS5/PS4 catalogue. Subscription catalogues and prices can change, so a value comparison is only useful if it reflects your region and the games you would actually play.
Do not choose a console based on a general claim that one subscription is cheaper or has more games unless you have checked current local prices, plan terms and the current catalogue on both platforms.

Should you wait for the next generation?
As of October 7, 2026, the available reporting does not establish a confirmed PS6 or next Xbox release date. TechRadar reported in 2025 that both companies had confirmed work on next-generation consoles, while describing 2027 as a possible launch year—not a confirmed date. A familiar console-cycle pattern is not a launch announcement.
That leaves the decision personal. If your current console still covers your needs and you do not have a game you want to play now, waiting is reasonable. If you want specific games today, compare the current prices where you live and buy the console that best fits your library and must-play list. Do not pay a premium—or delay a purchase you would enjoy—on the assumption that a successor will arrive in a particular year.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the choice
- Write down your must-play games. Identify which system has the games you most want, and verify availability for the edition you plan to buy.
- Check your existing collection. Look up key digital and disc titles individually; do not assume compatibility across an entire generation.
- Decide whether you need physical media. Confirm the console model has a drive if you want to use discs, and account for the type of discs you own.
- Compare subscription plans only if you will use one. Check current regional prices and included games rather than relying on a broad value claim.
- Compare local prices with the cost of waiting. If one system serves your needs now, an unconfirmed next-generation window is not a firm reason to postpone.
