The 2022 merger brought WarnerMedia’s games business into Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), but it did not, by itself, announce changes to individual game rights, studios, or release plans. WBD later named four franchises—Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC, especially Batman—as gaming priorities. A planned corporate separation that would have housed Warner Bros. Gaming Studios under a company called Warner Bros. was subsequently overtaken by a proposed Paramount Skydance merger that remains subject to closing conditions in the cited filing.
What changed in the 2022 merger?
Warner Bros. Discovery was formed when Discovery completed its merger with AT&T’s WarnerMedia business on April 8, 2022, according to WBD’s 2024 Form 10-K. The combined company brought WarnerMedia’s interactive gaming operation into WBD’s broader media and studios business.

WBD’s filings treat interactive gaming as part of Studios. The company identifies sales of games and mobile in-game content among its revenue sources; that describes how the business is accounted for, not a promise that every Warner Bros. film or TV property will receive a game.
Which game franchises did WBD identify as priorities?
In its February 27, 2025 shareholder letter, WBD said 2024 had been disappointing for Games and that it had announced a restructuring plan to concentrate resources and capital on proven intellectual property and studios. It named four tentpole franchises:

#1 Best Overall
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
- Harry Potter
- Game of Thrones
- Mortal Kombat
- DC, with particular emphasis on Batman
WBD said each had generated more than $1 billion in consumer sales in past years. That is a company-reported franchise-level figure, not a breakdown of game revenue alone. The letter does not say these are the only properties in WBD’s games catalog or disclose a release schedule for them.
WBD also characterized Games as a “strategic differentiator” that lets it immerse fans in its characters and worlds through interactive gameplay. This is management’s stated rationale for the business; it does not establish that any specific sequel, adaptation, or project has been approved.

Why did WBD single out Hogwarts Legacy?
In the same February 2025 letter, WBD said Hogwarts Legacy created a new game franchise and was the best-selling game of 2023. Those are WBD’s descriptions; the cited shareholder letter is not an independent verification of the sales ranking.
The example helps explain the company’s focus on established worlds: a game can become a valuable franchise in its own right, not simply an extension of a film or television release. But the statement does not specify the ownership or licensing arrangements for every Harry Potter game, nor does it announce a particular follow-up or release date.
Where were the games business and studios supposed to sit?
On December 12, 2024, WBD announced an intended structure with two divisions: Global Linear Networks and Streaming & Studios. The latter was described as containing the streaming platform and studios portfolio; WBD separately identifies interactive gaming within Studios. In July 2025, WBD said its planned separation would place Warner Bros. Gaming Studios in the planned Streaming & Studios company, which would be named Warner Bros. The other planned company, Global Networks, would be called Discovery Global.
These were organizational plans, not evidence that a separation had already taken effect or that game-by-game rights had changed. In its December 2024 announcement, CEO David Zaslav said the structure was intended to align the organization and give it flexibility for future strategic opportunities.

What happened to the separation plan?
WBD’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, describes a later transaction that changed the context for the planned separation. WBD terminated its Netflix merger agreement and entered into a merger agreement with Paramount Skydance. The filing says completion of the Paramount Skydance transaction remained subject to shareholder approval, regulatory approvals, and other closing conditions. It also says the agreement barred WBD from completing the separation as a condition of Paramount Skydance’s obligation to close. The filing does not report that the acquisition had been completed.
Accordingly, the planned Warner Bros./Discovery Global split should not be described as a completed reorganization. Nor does either corporate announcement establish the outcome of particular game franchises, development teams, or release plans.

| What the sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|
| WBD was formed through the April 8, 2022 merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia. | That the merger itself transferred or changed a specific game’s rights beyond the corporate combination. |
| WBD named Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC—especially Batman—as Games tentpoles in February 2025. | That every named franchise has a new game in development, or that any particular release date is set. |
| WBD described a planned separation and later disclosed a conditional Paramount Skydance merger agreement. | That the separation or Paramount Skydance acquisition has been completed, or what a completed transaction would mean for individual properties. |
For players, the clearest practical takeaway is that WBD publicly prioritized four established franchises, while the cited corporate statements leave project-by-project outcomes unanswered. Corporate structures and transaction status can change; a company-level strategy statement should not be treated as confirmation of a game announcement.
