On paper, Xbox Series X has the higher raw GPU specification; in actual games, neither console is a universal performance winner. Microsoft lists its GPU at 12 TFLOPS, compared with Sony’s original PS5 specification of up to 10.3 TFLOPS. Those are manufacturer figures, not game benchmarks. Which version performs better depends on the specific game, patch, graphics mode and scene—so compare frame-rate stability, resolution, visual settings and loading in the same title.
What the published specifications tell you
The original console specifications show broadly similar foundations: both use an 8-core Zen 2 CPU and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. Their GPU and storage figures differ, but those numbers describe hardware, not a guaranteed result in a particular game.

TFLOPS measure a GPU’s raw mathematical performance; they do not directly predict a game’s frame rate or image quality. Engine design, render settings and platform-specific optimization all affect what players see. Microsoft describes the Series X performance target as 4K at 60 FPS, with support up to 120 FPS. Sony lists support for 4K 120 Hz TVs, 8K TVs and HDMI 2.1 VRR. These are platform capabilities or targets, not promises that every game will render at 4K and 120 FPS.

Both consoles support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The effects a game implements—and the resolution or frame-rate tradeoffs attached to them—vary by title. Sony says developers can use PS5 ray-tracing hardware in different ways, so the presence of ray tracing alone does not establish which console produces the better result.

Why game-by-game results matter
Developers choose how a game uses each console’s hardware, and updates can change its performance or visuals. Digital Foundry’s February 2023 comparison of one game across PS5 and Xbox Series X/S examined visual settings, ray tracing and performance; it also described repeating analysis as the game’s code changed. That example illustrates why patch context matters, but it is not a platform-wide benchmark or a current verdict for every game.
No current, representative multi-game benchmark or independently established overall performance advantage is established here. A result from one title—or the consoles’ TFLOPS figures—cannot support a claim that one system always runs games better.

How to compare performance in a specific game
Use the same title and, as far as possible, the same patch, graphics mode and gameplay scene. Separate a developer’s target from measured output: a “60 FPS” mode label does not by itself show that the game holds 60 FPS consistently.
- Identify the version and mode. Record the platform, game version or patch, and whether you are comparing quality, performance or ray-tracing modes. If the modes differ between platforms, note that instead of treating them as equivalent.
- Check frame rate and pacing. Look for whether the game sustains its target, dips during demanding scenes, or delivers uneven frame pacing. A nominal frame-rate target does not tell the whole story.
- Compare resolution and image quality. Check whether output is native, dynamic or reconstructed when that information is available, and assess the image during motion as well as in still frames.
- Inspect visual settings and ray tracing. Compare which effects are enabled and whether one mode trades resolution or frame rate for them.
- Compare loading in the same scenario. Use the same game and transition or loading sequence. SSD capacity or headline storage figures alone do not establish which console loads that game faster.
- Check display support. The game must offer the mode, and the TV or monitor and connection must support the required refresh rate and features. Console support for high-refresh-rate output does not make every game a high-refresh-rate title.
Which console makes more sense for your games?
For a performance decision, start with the games you actually play and seek comparisons of those exact titles, modes and patches. If one version holds its target more consistently or offers visual settings you prefer, that is more useful than a general hardware ranking. Your preferred game library and platform also matter; a small specification difference is not a substitute for checking the titles you want.

For high-refresh-rate play, verify both the game’s available mode and your display’s compatibility before treating 120 Hz support as a deciding feature. For storage planning, Sony lists an M.2 SSD expansion connector and Xbox lists Storage Expansion Cards; check current compatibility and requirements before choosing an expansion device.
