A 120 Hz TV matters if you want to play compatible games at up to 120 FPS; it does not turn a 60 FPS game into 120 FPS. A higher-refresh signal path may also reduce some transmission delay, but that does not guarantee a noticeable improvement on every TV or setup.
What FPS and Hz mean for your game
FPS describes how many frames a game renders each second. Hz describes how many times a display refreshes each second. They refer to different parts of the system: a 60 FPS game produces up to 60 new frames per second, while a 120 Hz display can refresh up to 120 times per second.

When a 60 FPS game runs on a 120 Hz screen, the display can show each game frame across multiple refreshes. It does not create a second, new game-rendered frame in between. A TV’s motion interpolation, if available, is a separate image-processing feature—not the same as native 120 FPS gameplay.

If your goal is to play at 60 FPS, a 60 Hz TV is sufficient to show a 60 FPS signal. You do not need to upgrade just to make a 60 FPS game work or look as intended on a compatible 60 Hz display.

For PlayStation 5, the 120 Hz output setting is intended for a TV and games that support 120 Hz. PlayStation’s PS5 resolution guide also lets you inspect the capabilities reported by the connected HDMI device.
What a 120 Hz TV adds
Higher frame rates in supported games
A 120 Hz TV can display compatible output above 60 Hz, including 120 Hz when the game, console, TV, and signal path all support it. Xbox says Series X supports up to 120 FPS as an option for developers, but whether a particular game offers that frame rate depends on the game and its mode. A 120 Hz screen alone cannot make a 60 FPS game render more frames. See Xbox’s explanation of next-generation gaming features.

Potentially different signal transmission timing
Microsoft’s 2020 explanation of Xbox Series X latency gives HDMI frame-transmission times of 16.6 ms at 60 Hz and 8.3 ms at 120 Hz, and says the change can benefit games at all frame rates. Those figures describe the transmission timing Microsoft discusses; they are not total system input-lag measurements and do not establish that every 120 Hz TV will feel more responsive than every 60 Hz TV. Game processing, console output mode, TV processing, Game Mode, and the rest of the signal path all affect responsiveness. Read Microsoft’s latency explanation with that distinction in mind.
How VRR and ALLM fit in
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) are separate from a game’s frame rate. VRR can synchronize a compatible display’s refresh rate with the frames the game is outputting, which is most useful when frame delivery varies. It does not make a game render more frames. Xbox describes VRR as a way to maintain smooth visuals without tearing; PlayStation notes that PS5 VRR requires a compatible display and that results vary by TV and game. ALLM can switch a compatible TV into a low-latency mode. The practical effect depends on the TV and setup; neither ALLM nor VRR is required simply to display steady 60 FPS gameplay.
What to check before choosing or connecting a TV
If you are buying for 60 FPS gaming, a 120 Hz TV is optional. If you want higher-frame-rate play or a particular display feature, verify the whole configuration rather than relying on a “120 Hz” label alone.

- Native refresh rate: Check the manufacturer’s specification for the exact model. Marketing motion-rate labels can refer to processing or other claims rather than the panel’s native refresh behavior.
- Resolution at the target refresh rate: Confirm that the TV supports the resolution you want at 120 Hz; support for one combination does not establish support for every resolution.
- Game support: Check whether the games and modes you actually play offer 120 FPS output.
- VRR compatibility and range: Verify support on the TV and console, and whether it covers the games or frame-rate variations that matter to you.
- Input lag in Game Mode: Look for measurements of the exact TV model and mode if responsiveness is a priority; official compatibility pages do not provide a cross-brand input-lag comparison.
- HDMI port and signal path: Some TVs support key features only on selected ports. Check the TV manual, and account for an AV receiver or soundbar between the console and TV, since it may affect which signal modes pass through. Microsoft’s Xbox latency article advises checking port support and the connection setup.
Is upgrading worthwhile for your use?
Keep a 60 Hz TV if your target is 60 FPS and your current setup displays that signal correctly. Consider a native 120 Hz model if you want to use supported 120 FPS modes, or if a specific verified feature such as VRR is important to you. The benefit depends on the games you play and the exact TV, port, resolution, and connection chain—not simply on the number printed in a product description.
