Ampere Analysis analyst Piers Harding-Rolls expects the console at the end of 2028, according to TechRadar, while a separate TechRadar report says Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki indicated the launch date had not been decided. Sony’s strong PS5 business is well documented, but its published figures do not establish that PS5 sales caused the PS6’s timing.
Is the PS6 release date delayed?
There is no officially announced PS6 release date in the cited reporting, and no confirmed public postponement to compare against an earlier Sony schedule. TechRadar reported on August 18, 2026, that Totoki said the launch date had not been decided. That is evidence of reported uncertainty, not confirmation that Sony has delayed a launch.

The distinction matters: a delay normally means a company has moved a previously stated target. The reporting cited here does not identify a public PS6 launch date that Sony later changed. Sony’s official sales and annual-report materials likewise do not announce a PS6 date.

TechRadar reports that Ampere Analysis analyst Piers Harding-Rolls expects no PS6 before 2028, with the end of 2028 his current expectation. Harding-Rolls told TechRadar, “We believe this almost certainly guarantees that the PS6 won’t arrive until 2028 at the earliest.” That is an analyst forecast, not Sony guidance or a confirmed launch window.

The forecast is linked in the report to plans around physical-game production. It should not be treated as proof of a final PS6 hardware configuration, including whether a future console will have a disc drive. Sony has not confirmed a PS6 model, price, date, or configuration in the cited sources.
What Sony’s PS5 sales figures do—and do not—show
Sony Interactive Entertainment reports more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold worldwide on a cumulative sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026. Sell-in is not the same as a count of units purchased by consumers at retail. Sony’s reported totals also include returned and refurbished products.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 hardware, cumulative | More than 95 million as of June 30, 2026 | Worldwide sell-in, reported by Sony Interactive Entertainment |
| PS5 hardware, FY2025 | 16.0 million | Fiscal-year unit total reported by Sony Interactive Entertainment |
| PS5 hardware, FY2026 Q1 | 1.6 million | April–June 2026, reported by Sony Interactive Entertainment |
| PS4 and PS5 software, cumulative | More than 1.706 billion as of June 30, 2026 | Combined total, not PS5-only |
| PS4 and PS5 software, FY2025 | 317.9 million | Combined total for the fiscal year, not PS5-only |
| PlayStation monthly active users | 125 million as of June 30, 2026 | Sony estimate based on SIE research |
Sony’s software totals include physical and download-only titles, VR titles, and games bundled with consoles. They are not a count of distinct games or PS5-only sales. The FY2026 Q1 figure covers April through June 2026; Sony’s earnings archive lists the Q1 materials dated July 31, 2026.
These figures support the view that the PS5 remains a large, active business. They do not, by themselves, explain when Sony will launch a successor. In its FY2025 Form 20-F, Sony said Game & Network Services revenue benefited from growth in network services and game software sales alongside expansion of the PS5 installed base. The same report noted increased prices and supply shortages for memory semiconductors as hardware-planning risks. It did not identify those conditions—or strong PS5 sales—as a reason for a PS6 delay.

How to read the reports about Sony’s launch planning
The two kinds of evidence answer different questions. Sony’s published figures describe its existing PlayStation business; the 2028 estimate describes an analyst’s view of possible future timing. TechRadar’s report of Totoki’s remarks adds that a launch date was reportedly undecided, but it does not turn the analyst forecast into an official schedule.
- Officially established: Sony has reported substantial PS5 hardware and combined PS4/PS5 software totals, along with business conditions affecting hardware planning.
- Reported, but not a public date announcement: TechRadar says Totoki indicated the PS6 launch date had not been decided.
- Forecast only: Harding-Rolls expects no launch before 2028 and currently expects the end of that year.
- Not established by these sources: that Sony delayed a previously announced date, that PS5 sales caused a delay, or that a final PS6 configuration or price has been set.
TechRadar’s account of Totoki also discusses component shortages and trade conditions. A sentence it attributes to him about the need to take action is presented in that broader context; the cited excerpt does not establish that he was specifically discussing the PS6. It should not be read as a direct statement explaining a PS6 delay.
