Date clarification: This announcement referred to Target’s online Nintendo Switch 2 inventory release on June 6, 2025. It is a historical launch update, not an upcoming 2026 shopping alert.
Target offered additional units of both the standard Nintendo Switch 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle online during the early morning of June 6, while supplies lasted. Target had planned separate in-store sales for June 5, the console’s U.S. launch day.

What Target announced
Target’s June 2025 plan was to make more Nintendo Switch 2 inventory available online beginning early on Friday, June 6, 2025. The offer covered:
- Nintendo Switch 2 console
- Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle
Target described the inventory as limited and available only while supplies lasted. Contemporary reporting confirmed the split between Target’s June 5 in-store launch and June 6 online availability. Nintendo Life’s report described the online release as an early-morning stock drop.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

The exact timing was not guaranteed
“Early morning” did not establish a guaranteed launch hour. The available announcement did not confirm that orders would open at midnight Eastern, 3 a.m. Eastern, or any other precise time.
Some shoppers reported successful orders during the overnight and early-morning period, including reports around approximately 3:30 a.m. Eastern and 5:00 a.m. Eastern. Those were user observations, not official Target timing. The safest preparation would have been to monitor Target shortly after midnight Pacific and throughout the overnight-to-early-morning window.
Was this a preorder?
Not precisely. The June 6 event was better described as an online launch-day inventory release: the Switch 2 had already launched in the United States on June 5, and Target was making additional units available for purchase online the following day.
Shoppers could try to place an order through Target.com or the Target app. Availability depended on inventory assigned to the shopper’s ZIP code and the selected fulfillment method, such as shipping, pickup, or delivery. A product page appearing active did not guarantee that checkout would succeed.
Target’s preorder guidance also explains that release dates and delivery estimates are based on vendor information and are generally estimates for release day or shortly afterward. That distinction mattered: ordering online on June 6 did not guarantee delivery on June 6.
Launch prices and package choices
| Product | U.S. launch MSRP | Who it suited |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $449.99 | Buyers seeking the lowest-cost console package or planning to choose another game |
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle | $499.99 | Buyers who wanted Mario Kart World included |
| Mario Kart World standalone | $79.99 | Players buying the game separately |
Nintendo confirmed the June 5, 2025 U.S. launch and these prices in its launch-day announcement. The bundle included a digital copy of Mario Kart World, not a physical game cartridge.
The bundle cost $50 more than the standard console, while Mario Kart World’s standalone MSRP was $79.99. That makes the bundle potentially attractive for someone who planned to buy the game anyway, but it should not be called a guaranteed $29.99 savings unless a retailer explicitly advertised that calculation. Taxes, promotions, shipping, protection plans, and Target Circle Card offers could change the final checkout total.

How shoppers should have prepared
- Create or sign in to a Target account.
- Save a valid shipping address and payment method.
- Install or update the Target app.
- Remain signed in on both Target.com and the app if possible.
- Locate both the standard console and Mario Kart World bundle listings in advance.
- Check which fulfillment methods Target offered for the shopper’s ZIP code.
- Decide beforehand whether either package was acceptable. Switching between listings during a stock release could waste valuable time.
- Avoid aggressive refreshing or opening excessive tabs if Target began limiting traffic.
There was no universal guarantee that the app would outperform the website. Some stock hunters reported better results in the app, while others completed purchases through Target.com. Those reports were anecdotal, not Target policy.

Limited inventory created several failure points:
- A console could disappear within minutes.
- Stock could appear available but be unavailable for a particular ZIP code.
- Adding an item to the cart did not reserve it.
- Payment, billing-address, or address-validation errors could make the item unavailable before checkout.
- Shipping stock and store-pickup stock could be separate.
- Fulfillment could be reassigned, delayed, split, or canceled.
Target product listings use the warning “Limited quantities. While supplies last,” so a visible listing was never the same as guaranteed inventory. The actual finish line was an order confirmation and order number—not merely a cart page.
Common checkout problems and what they meant
- “Out of stock” after refreshing
- The available inventory may have been exhausted or reassigned. Repeated refreshing could not create additional stock.
- Cart error
- The item had not been reserved simply because it entered the cart. Returning to the listing or trying the other fulfillment method could help if stock remained.
- Payment failure
- Check the billing address, card limits, expiration date, and wallet settings. Do not repeatedly submit orders across devices without checking whether one already succeeded.
- ZIP-code restriction
- Target’s inventory and fulfillment options could vary by location. Changing the ZIP code to obtain a false availability result would not solve delivery or pickup eligibility.
- Pickup unavailable
- Store inventory and online shipping inventory were not interchangeable. A nearby store could have units without offering pickup through the website.
- Delayed or canceled order
- Launch-day ordering did not guarantee immediate shipping. Inventory allocation problems could move an estimated delivery date or cancel an order.
- Duplicate order
- Shoppers using multiple devices or payment attempts should check their order history and confirmation emails before trying again.
Standard console or Mario Kart bundle?
The standard Switch 2 was the better choice for buyers who already owned Mario Kart World, wanted a different game, or prioritized the lowest upfront cost.
The Mario Kart World Bundle made more sense for families and players who intended to buy the game anyway and preferred a ready-to-play package. Its disadvantages were the higher upfront price and the fact that the included game was digital. Because bundles were perceived as better value, they could also attract especially strong demand, although no verified Target inventory quantity is available.
If Target sold out
Shoppers could check other established retailers, but they should not assume that every retailer used Target’s schedule or rules. Contemporary launch coverage included:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Target stores: planned in-store sales on June 5, 2025.
- Walmart: offered launch-day sales through its own online and store channels.
- Best Buy: used its own launch inventory and fulfillment policies.
- GameStop: had separate launch procedures, which could vary by location and membership requirements.
- Nintendo: offered its own retail channels.
Axios’ launch schedule provides contemporary context for the differences among retailers. Buyers should use official retailer pages and established sellers, avoid unfamiliar third-party listings, and be cautious about scalper prices above MSRP.

Four dates should be kept separate:
- Order placement: when the Target order was successfully submitted.
- Ship date: when the warehouse dispatched it.
- Estimated delivery date: Target’s projection, which could change.
- Actual arrival: when the package reached the customer.
A June 6 online order could arrive later depending on location, warehouse assignment, inventory allocation, and shipping method. Neither the announcement nor Target’s delivery guidance established a universal launch-day arrival promise.

For readers shopping now, any active Target Switch 2 listing is a separate post-launch retail situation. It should not be confused with the June 6, 2025 inventory drop. Target’s current Nintendo Switch 2 category page and standard console listing are the appropriate places to check present-day price, stock, ZIP-code eligibility, and fulfillment options. Availability can change by location and time.
Switch 2 product context
The console launched with a 7.9-inch screen, 256GB of internal storage, a dock capable of up to 4K output with compatible games and televisions, and compatibility with physical and digital Nintendo Switch games subject to Nintendo’s limitations. Its Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and support mouse controls in compatible games. These specifications were useful context, but they did not change the central retail advice: stock, fulfillment, and order confirmation mattered more than the product-page feature list.

Switch 2 buyers should look specifically for microSD Express storage rather than assuming an older generic microSD card will provide the required compatibility. A Target protection plan was also optional; shoppers should review its exclusions, coverage, and claims process rather than treating it as necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Target open Switch 2 orders at midnight Eastern on June 6, 2025?
Target publicly described the release as beginning early in the morning, but the reviewed sources did not establish a guaranteed exact hour. User reports about overnight times were anecdotal and varied.
Was the June 6 Target event a preorder?
It was more accurately an online launch-day inventory release. The Switch 2 had launched in the U.S. on June 5, and Target offered additional units online the following day.
Did ordering from Target guarantee delivery on June 6?
No. An order confirmation showed that the order was accepted, but ship dates and estimated delivery dates depended on inventory, location, warehouse assignment, and shipping method.

Target’s Switch 2 online sale happened on June 6, 2025, after its planned June 5 store launch. It covered the $449.99 console and $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle, began during an unspecified early-morning window, and was limited to available inventory. For current purchases, check live retailer listings rather than treating the 2025 announcement as an upcoming stock alert.
