The safest fix is to identify the Canon or camera program that needs it, then repair or reinstall that complete application from its original installer or official Canon support source.
What this file actually does
The filename belongs to Canon’s older Digital Camera Support Library and PSDK or CRW camera-image software. Public file metadata describes it as “Hight level DLL of PSDK” and identifies Canon Inc. as the publisher.

This is an application or SDK runtime library, not a modern Windows device driver. Older Canon utilities, photo-management programs, camera-download tools, and other software that redistributed Canon’s camera SDK may load it when they start.

Older Canon runtimes commonly used several DLLs together. The complete installation may also contain files such as psdkReg.dll or pscParse.dll. That is why copying one replacement file can make the first message disappear while leaving the application unable to start.
The file may appear in an old installation inventory under a Windows system directory, but that does not prove it belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 today. Application DLLs are normally safest beside the executable that uses them.
Cause-by-symptom guide
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| The error began after uninstalling Canon software | A shared Canon runtime was removed | Repair or reinstall the parent Canon application |
| Defender or another antivirus mentions the file | Quarantine or detection of an old DLL | Check Protection history before restoring anything |
| The file is present, but the program still will not start | A dependent Canon or Microsoft runtime is missing | Restore the complete application package and read the full error |
| The problem began after moving the program to another computer | The application was copied without its runtime files | Install it properly from original media or official support |
| The error appeared after upgrading to Windows 10 or 11 | Legacy software compatibility issue | Reinstall, test compatibility settings, or use a supported replacement |
| A 32-bit program is running on 64-bit Windows | Wrong architecture or incomplete side-by-side files | Restore the application’s matching 32-bit runtime |
| Windows reports broader file corruption | A Windows component may also be damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer is missing |
The DLL is not a COM registration library | Stop trying to register it and repair the parent application |
Fix 1: Identify the program that owns the error
Do this before searching for a replacement file.
- Write down the complete error message.
- Note the program name shown in the title bar.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- If the failing program appears briefly, right-click it and choose Open file location.
- If it closes too quickly, search for the program from the Start menu, right-click it, choose Open file location, then right-click its shortcut and choose Open file location again if necessary.
- Record the folder containing the program’s
.exe.
Look for older Canon software, camera import utilities, photo browsers, or a third-party program that handled Canon CRW images. ZoomBrowser EX and similar legacy Canon utilities are common examples of software that may need older Canon components, although the exact parent program depends on the installation.

Do not download psdkdll.dll before identifying this program. The correct file, if needed, must match the parent application and its other runtime files.
Fix 2: Repair the Canon or camera application
This is the most likely solution because the file belongs to a specific application package.
For a Microsoft Store-style application entry
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Canon or camera application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair should preserve the program’s data while replacing damaged application files. If the program starts, open a camera image or reconnect the camera to confirm that the affected feature works.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that the application’s settings or local data may be removed.
For traditional desktop software
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Canon or camera program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify if one is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program from the same window. Restart Windows, then reinstall it from the original Canon disc, the application vendor’s official support page, or an installer you already know is authentic.
Keep the program installed in its normal application folder. Do not separately place a downloaded DLL into a system folder after the reinstall.
Check the application directory
After repair or reinstall, open the folder containing the failing executable. The runtime files should be together with the application or in the location specified by that program’s installer.

If psdkdll.dll is missing but the application is otherwise present, the installation is incomplete. Reinstall the full package rather than copying only this file. If the file exists but the error remains, the message may be caused by another missing dependency.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Old, rarely used application DLLs can be quarantined by security software. Do not immediately disable protection or restore an unknown file.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
psdkdll.dllor the Canon application. - Open the event to see its path and detection details.
- Compare the path with the legitimate application folder you recorded earlier.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The file came from an authentic Canon or application installation.
- The surrounding program is one you intentionally installed.
- The quarantine path matches that program’s folder.
- You are restoring the original installation rather than a file downloaded separately.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unknown download directory, or a system folder where you did not expect the application to install it, leave it quarantined. Reinstall the trusted application instead.
Microsoft’s guidance on reviewing detections and restoring items is available in its Protection History documentation.

Fix 4: Check architecture and dependent files
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the runtime files intended for that application. Installing a 64-bit replacement does not repair a 32-bit Canon program.
Do not assume that placing a file in System32 makes it available to every program. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is associated with 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains compatibility components for 32-bit applications. Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for old application DLLs.
Instead:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Locate the application executable.
- Check whether
psdkdll.dllis beside it. - Look for other Canon runtime files in the same installation.
- If the package is incomplete, repair or reinstall it.
If the complete program is present and the error names a Microsoft file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll, install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

For a 32-bit application, select the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Use the x64 package for a 64-bit application. Install both only when you genuinely use both 32-bit and 64-bit applications that require them.
Visual C++ will not recreate psdkdll.dll. It helps only when the error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because psdkdll.dll is not documented as a Windows system file, DISM and SFC are not the primary repair. Use them when several Windows programs are failing, Windows reports damaged components, or the problem began after broader system corruption.
First save your work, then:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the files used by SFC. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions if either command reports an error.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart Windows and test the Canon application. If it reports no integrity violations, stop treating this as a missing Windows DLL problem and return to repairing the parent application.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it found; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Canon program remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 unless the application specifically requires registration
Most runtime DLLs are loaded by an application and are not registered with Windows. Running regsvr32 against psdkdll.dll will often produce an error similar to:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
Recommended: Fix Windows Errors and Clear Junk Files in Minutes - Free Scan →Recommended: Update Every Outdated Driver on Your PC in One Scan - Free →Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
That does not mean the file is missing. It means the DLL was not designed for COM registration.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation explicitly says that a particular DLL is an ActiveX or COM component that must be registered. Microsoft explains this limitation in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
For this file, repair the owning application instead.

Some Canon camera utilities were replaced by newer software and may not be supported on current Windows releases. Canon community guidance identifies ZoomBrowser EX as legacy software, and later discussions note compatibility problems on Windows 11.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the program installs but still fails:
- Right-click the program’s
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version that matches the period when the software was supported.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Start the program again.
Compatibility mode is not a guarantee that the old software is supported. It cannot repair missing runtime files or modern hardware limitations.
If the program is essential, use a properly isolated older Windows environment or virtual machine where licensing and security requirements allow it. Otherwise, use a current Canon utility or Windows’ built-in photo import features.

When the application installs but cannot communicate with the camera, check the camera’s USB connection and Windows detection:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Cameras, and Imaging devices.
- Look for the camera or an unknown device.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
This step addresses camera detection, not the missing psdkdll.dll itself. The DLL is an application runtime, not a camera driver.
If manually checking each device and hunting for compatible driver versions is taking longer than the underlying repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what needs attention, while installation is handled by the full version, and it will not replace the Canon application DLL.
Fix 8: Use System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after an installation, update, cleanup operation, or driver change.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore normally affects system files, registry settings, and installed programs rather than personal documents. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.
After restoration, test the application before reinstalling other software. If the error returns after a later update or cleanup, repair the application and investigate what removed its runtime.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
Avoid websites offering individual copies of psdkdll.dll or automated DLL repair utilities. A downloaded file can be:
- The wrong build for the parent application.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing other Canon SDK files.
- Modified or unsafe.
- Placed in a directory where it creates a version conflict.
- Unable to fix the actual missing dependency.
A successful manual copy is not proof that the installation is repaired. The next Canon library may fail, or the application may load an incompatible file.
Use the original application media, the official Canon product-support source, or the application vendor’s verified installer. If no current installer exists, preserve the old program only in a controlled environment rather than rebuilding it from unrelated DLL files.
Frequently asked questions
Is psdkdll.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it is a Windows component. It is associated with Canon’s Digital Camera Support Library and older Canon PSDK software.
Is psdkdll.dll a driver?
No. It is better described as an application or SDK runtime DLL. A camera driver may be needed separately for device detection, but installing a driver will not normally restore this file.
Is it safe to copy the file into System32?
No. The correct location is normally the application’s own folder, as determined by its installer. Do not use a historical system-folder listing as a reason to copy the file into a modern Windows directory.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Only if the complete error names a missing Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Visual C++ does not install psdkdll.dll.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. Runtime DLLs generally do not support COM registration. Repair the application unless its official documentation specifically requires registration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the file have to be 32-bit?
Public metadata points to an old 32-bit-era component, but a complete Canon architecture matrix is not established. Treat the correct architecture as application-specific and restore the matching program package.
What if reinstalling Canon software does not help?
Capture the application name, executable path, Windows version, full error text, location of any existing psdkdll.dll, and any antivirus detection. Also note whether the error names another Canon or Microsoft DLL. That information identifies whether the remaining issue is a dependency, compatibility problem, or damaged installation.
Can I keep using an old Canon utility on Windows 11?
It may install or run with compatibility settings, but legacy Canon software is not necessarily supported on current Windows releases. If it remains unreliable, use a current Canon utility, Windows photo import, or an isolated older Windows environment.
