If PSN is not working, first check the official PlayStation Network status page. Then run your PS5 or PS4 connection test and identify whether the failure affects PSN, your account, home network, console software, or only one game. Do not factory-reset the console for a suspected outage.
When checked on August 18, 2026, the U.S. status page showed Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct as operational. That was a point-in-time result, not a guarantee that every account or console was working.

Check whether PSN is down
The official status page is the best first check. It separates PSN into several components:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Account Management: sign-in and account-related services.
- Gaming and Social: online multiplayer, friends, parties, and messaging.
- PlayStation Video: video-related services.
- PlayStation Store: browsing and purchasing digital content.
- PlayStation Direct: the Direct shopping service.
One category can fail while the others continue working. A green page also cannot rule out a brief regional problem, ISP outage, Wi-Fi interference, DNS failure, restrictive NAT, account restriction, or a game publisher’s own server outage. Refresh the page and check again later if the problem began during maintenance or a reported incident. PlayStation’s broader connectivity support hub is useful for console-side troubleshooting.

Identify what is actually failing
Before changing router settings, classify the symptom:
- You cannot sign in to PSN.
- The console cannot connect to the internet or obtain an IP address.
- Internet access works, but PSN sign-in fails.
- Online multiplayer fails in only one game.
- The PlayStation Store will not load.
- Downloads are paused, stuck, or failing.
- Friends, parties, messaging, or voice chat are unavailable.
- Cloud saves, licenses, or PlayStation Plus features cannot be verified.
- Remote Play or PlayStation Portal cannot connect.
- An error code appears.
If only one game is affected, check that game’s update status and the publisher’s server status. A successful PSN sign-in does not mean every game’s matchmaking service is available.
Safe fixes to try first
1. Fully restart the console
Restart the PS5 or PS4 from its power menu rather than simply returning to the home screen or leaving it in Rest Mode. Then try the affected feature again.
2. Restart the modem and router
Turn off the modem and router, wait at least five minutes, then power them back on. PlayStation recommends this sequence for some network errors, including WS-115338-1 and NW-102650-4. It is a practical reset, not a universal cure.
3. Test another device
Try browsing on a phone or computer connected to the same network.
- Nothing works: investigate the ISP, modem, router, or local internet service.
- Other devices work but the PlayStation does not: investigate the console connection, Wi-Fi conditions, account, or PSN path.
- Only one game fails: investigate the game’s servers, patch, publisher account integration, or installation.
A working web browser does not prove that every PSN authentication or gaming service is reachable; they use separate services and paths.

To configure a connection, use Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection, choose Use Wi-Fi or a LAN cable, and then select Easy or Custom.
The test can show whether the console sees the network, obtains an IP address, reaches the internet, signs in to PSN, and what NAT type and estimated download/upload speeds it sees. The speed figures are estimates, not a guarantee of good multiplayer. Latency, packet loss, congestion, and NAT behavior can matter more than headline Mbps.
Reconnect Wi-Fi or test Ethernet
On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the saved network, re-enter its password if necessary, and run the test. If a hidden network is not listed, use manual setup.
On PS4, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi, choose Easy or Custom, select the network, enter the password, and test the connection.
For a quick wireless diagnosis:
- Move the console closer to the router and remove obvious obstructions.
- Try 5 GHz at short range or 2.4 GHz at longer range.
- Temporarily disconnect unnecessary high-bandwidth devices.
- Try a phone hotspot only as a comparison test. Mobile NAT, data limits, and latency make it unsuitable as a permanent gaming connection.
If possible, connect the console directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test.
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails: investigate signal, interference, router placement, or wireless configuration.
- Both fail: the issue may involve PSN, the account, router or ISP routing, or console software.
- Ethernet fails mainly at busy times: congestion or ISP routing may be involved.
PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible for some PS5 network errors.

Update the console and affected game
On PS5, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then choose the available update option if one is offered.
PS4 online features also require current system software. Use the update instructions in PlayStation’s connectivity support and PS4 hardware support pages.
For a game or app that will not update, test the connection, restart the console, confirm that system software is current, and retry. If that fails, PlayStation’s software and application troubleshooting recommends deleting and reinstalling the affected game or app when necessary, followed by the relevant Safe Mode cache or database option.

- Convenient Deployment: Your wired device can connect to a WiFi network with this wireless bridge. Eliminates the need for long cable runs in your home to get Internet access.
- Universal Compatibility: With RJ45 port, this WiFi bridge works with any Lan-only devices like smart TV, printer, Blu-ray player, game console, camera, Ethernet switch, desktop, laptop PC, Raspberry Pi, etc.
- Stable Connection: 2 powerful external antennas receives stronger WiFi from router than internal ones. The WiFi to Ethernet adapter brings a reliable connection for a non-WiFi device
- Fast Speed: Working with your 5Ghz WiFi network, the Ethernet bridge delivers a 3 times faster transmission compared with the one which only supports 2.4Ghz WiFi band
- Installation is a Breeze: Pair the Ethernet WiFi adapter with your router via WPS in seconds. WEB UI method allows you to pick other existing Wi-Fi signals and do more settings. Driver setup is not needed
Reinstallation removes the local game installation and may require a full download. Confirm that saves are synchronized or backed up before deleting anything. Do not confuse deleting a game with deleting saved data.
Separate account problems from network problems
If the console reaches the internet but sign-in fails, verify the correct sign-in ID and password and try the official PlayStation account-management website. Check for security or verification emails and determine whether the account is suspended. Family-management or child-account restrictions can also affect online features.
If the error mentions suspension, follow the account-support route instead of repeatedly changing router settings. The official error-code hub includes account-access and temporary-suspension guidance, including PS5 codes beginning with WS-116.
Do not create a new account as a first-line fix. Purchases, trophies, subscriptions, saves, and friends data may remain associated with the original account.
Restore licenses for Store and content problems
Use license restoration when games are locked, purchased content is missing, or a download fails despite a working connection. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses > Restore.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Restoring licenses is different from reinstalling a game, deleting saved data, deactivating every console, or resetting the console. It will not repair a broadband failure. If multiplayer works but the Store does not, check the separate Store category on the status page.
Advanced router troubleshooting
NAT and double NAT
NAT affects how readily the console communicates with other players. A restrictive NAT can interfere with matchmaking, parties, voice chat, Remote Play, or connections to particular players, but NAT is not automatically the cause of a complete PSN outage or sign-in failure.
Double NAT—such as an ISP gateway connected to a separate router—can complicate connections. Carrier-grade NAT may also prevent ordinary inbound port forwarding from working.

- UDP: 3478, 3479, 49152–65535
These are troubleshooting guidance for particular errors, not a universal requirement for every console. Port forwarding is router-specific and can create security or double-NAT complications. Do not blindly forward an entire range to every device. Record the original settings, consult the router manufacturer or ISP, and undo changes that do not help.
IPv4, IPv6, DNS, static IP, and MTU
PS5 supports IPv6 but does not support IPv6-only connections. If the router is configured as IPv6-only, restore IPv4 support rather than repeatedly changing DNS or MTU.
PlayStation’s setup guide lists advanced settings such as IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, proxy, and Multi-Link Operation on supported PS5 Pro configurations. Leave these on automatic or default unless you have a specific diagnostic reason to change them.
A temporary DNS change may help name resolution, but it cannot fix a PSN outage, account suspension, broken Wi-Fi radio, or game-server outage. A static IP is mainly useful when a router rule or port-forwarding arrangement needs a stable local address. MTU changes should not be made without a clear reason. These are reversible experiments, not guaranteed fixes.

Safe Mode is appropriate when restarts, connection setup, updates, and license checks have failed or when symptoms suggest a storage or database problem.
- Turn off the console by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, roughly seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
See PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide for the current menu and warnings.
PS5 options
- Restart PS5: exits Safe Mode.
- Repair Console Storage: does not erase data and targets startup or storage issues.
- Update System Software: updates from a download or USB device.
- Restore Default Settings: resets settings without deleting content stored on the console, according to PlayStation.
- Clear Cache and Rebuild Database: clears cache and reorganizes the content database.
- Reset PS5: deletes user data.
- Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): deletes user data and removes the system software.
PS4 options
- Restart System and Update System Software.
- Restore Default Settings.
- Rebuild Database.
- Initialize PS4: deletes user data.
- Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software): deletes user data and reinstalls system software.
Back up saves to USB or cloud storage before any reset or initialization. Do not choose Reset, Initialize, or Reinstall System Software merely because PSN will not sign in.
Look up the exact error code
Search the exact code in PlayStation’s official error-code database, preserving whether it is a PS5 or PS4 code. Examples include:
| Code | Platform | General category |
|---|---|---|
| NW-102468-1 | PS5 | Network-connection problem |
| WS-115338-1 | PS5 | Server-connection problem; check PSN status and restart networking equipment |
| NW-102650-4 | PS5 | Connection to PSN; guidance can include status checks, wired testing, router firmware, ports, static IP, or temporary DNS testing |
| CE-106487-6 | PS5 | Download or installation issue; license restoration and database troubleshooting may apply |
| CE-33950-0 | PS4 | Could not connect to a server to verify a license |
| CE-35340-5 | PS4 | Service may be under maintenance |
| NP-39225-1 | PS4 | Internet-connection problem |
A code can have more than one cause, and instructions can differ by platform, region, account state, or game. Use the official page for the exact code rather than an undated generic list.
When to stop troubleshooting
Escalate to PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs when:
- The issue persists across both Wi-Fi and Ethernet and across more than one network.
- The account remains inaccessible or displays a suspension message.
- The console repeatedly fails storage checks, updates, or database operations.
- The console cannot connect even after a known-good wired test and current software.
- The status page is operational but the exact error remains after the official steps.
The diagnostic order is simple: check the official status page, classify the failed feature, run the console test, restart the console and network, update software, then investigate the account, licenses, router, or storage layer indicated by the result. Avoid buying a new router, changing DNS, forwarding ports, or factory-resetting the console until the evidence points to that specific layer.
