Choose Tracer if you want a conventional, mobility-led flanker: she uses close-range automatic fire, directional teleports, and Recall to get back to an earlier position and health. Sombra may appeal more if you prefer information and disruption, but Blizzard’s latest indexed patch notes describe her as a Support with a reworked kit—not the same kind of flanker. Check her live abilities in-game before deciding.
How Tracer and Sombra differ right now
The title’s “flanker” framing fits Tracer directly. Sombra’s role and abilities have shifted across updates, so comparing them as if they currently share an unchanged role would be misleading. Blizzard’s Tracer hero page lists Pulse Pistols, Blink, Recall, and Pulse Bomb. Its Sombra hero page still lists a Damage role and Hack, but a newer Blizzard patch-note result says she moved to Support and Hack was removed in favor of Weaken. That conflict makes the in-game client the best place to confirm Sombra’s current role and kit.

Choose Tracer for mobile duels and self-repositioning
Tracer’s weapons are described as short-range automatic pistols, so her documented loop points toward getting close, tracking targets, then moving before the enemy can punish her. Blink teleports her in the direction she is moving. Recall takes her back to a previous location and health, making the timing of that reset an important part of staying alive.
- Pick Tracer if you enjoy taking repeated close-range engagements rather than relying on long-range damage.
- Pick her if you like movement decisions that happen during a fight: Blink changes your position, while Recall can undo a risky moment by returning you to an earlier state.
- Expect aim and ability timing to work together; mobility does not remove the need to land shots at close range.

Consider Sombra if information and disruption appeal more
Sombra’s historical identity centers on scouting and disruption. But the official hero page’s Hack and Damage-role framing conflicts with newer patch-note information. Blizzard’s latest indexed patch-note result says Sombra moved from Damage to Support, Hack was removed, and Weaken halves an enemy’s damage and healing output. Because that result is newer than the hero page but volatile, confirm the current role and abilities in your game before relying on those details.
The change is part of a longer-running shift in her role expression. Blizzard’s June 2026 notes said an earlier rework had diminished Sombra’s flanker style and described changes intended to restore it, including moving Stealth to an ability and changing Translocator. Those notes predate the newer Support rework, so they should not be treated as a description of her present kit.

Choose Sombra if you are drawn to information-led disruption or the team utility described in the latest notes, and are comfortable adapting as her role changes. Avoid choosing her on the assumption that an older guide or the hero page’s Hack description necessarily matches the current client.
