If Windows reports that psregapi.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or remove the Intel wireless software that installed it instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
The file is associated with the Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Registry API Module. PROSet/Wireless historically included Wi-Fi drivers, wireless utilities, and an application-programming interface used by system manufacturers and wireless features.

Exact paths vary by PROSet generation and the computer manufacturer’s package.
Startup errors have historically involved Intel utilities such as:
ifrmewrk.exeZCfgSvc.exe
That is why the message may appear when you sign in, even when the program you were trying to open is unrelated to Wi-Fi.
Intel PROSet is also an aging component. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, many adapters need only the Intel or manufacturer-provided Wi-Fi driver. A current driver-only package may not contain the legacy PROSet API, and that can be normal.
Causes matched to symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| “PsRegApi.dll was not found” at sign-in | Incomplete PROSet installation, antivirus quarantine, or an obsolete startup utility | Repair or remove PROSet |
| “The procedure entry point could not be located” | Mismatched Intel DLL and executable versions | Reinstall the complete matched package |
| “The specified module could not be found” while the file exists | A dependency of the DLL is missing | Reinstall the full Intel package, not only the DLL |
| Error began after a wireless driver update | Driver-only and PROSet components no longer match | Reinstall the OEM package as one release |
| Error began after malware removal | A legitimate Intel file may have been quarantined or deleted | Check Protection History, scan, then reinstall |
| Wi-Fi works but an error appears at login | Obsolete PROSet startup entry | Uninstall the old PROSet utility |
| Error began after restoring an old disk image | Old software and newer drivers are mixed | Remove and reinstall the correct wireless package |
Before changing anything, note the complete error message and the executable named in it. Also record your Windows version, wireless adapter model, and what changed immediately before the problem.
Fix 1: Repair Intel PROSet/Wireless
This is the safest first repair when Intel PROSet is still installed.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find Intel PROSet/Wireless Software in the program list.
- Select it and choose Change.
- Select Repair, if that option is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, sign in and check whether the error returns. Test Wi-Fi and open the application that previously triggered the message.

If Repair is unavailable, the installation may be too damaged for its maintenance program to work. Continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete matching Intel package
Do not begin by copying psregapi.dll into a system folder. The executable, DLL, driver, configuration files, and dependent modules must come from a compatible release.
Identify the wireless adapter
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Write down the full name of the Intel wireless adapter.
- Double-click the adapter and open the Driver tab.
- Record the driver provider, date, and version.
Also check whether Windows is 64-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Look at System type.
Download the package from the computer manufacturer’s official support page when available. OEM wireless packages may contain customizations required by that laptop. Intel’s official PROSet/Wireless download area is appropriate when an OEM package is unavailable, but the adapter, Windows release, and architecture must match.
For older Windows installations, a full PROSet package may be required to restore legacy utilities. For Windows 10 and Windows 11, the available package may be driver-only. Do not assume that a driver-only package is defective because it does not include psregapi.dll.
Remove the broken package
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Intel PROSet/Wireless Software.
- Select the menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Restart when prompted.
If it is not listed there:
- Press
Windows + R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Select Intel PROSet/Wireless Software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not select Uninstall device in Device Manager unless you are deliberately following the manufacturer’s driver-removal instructions. Removing the wrong network device can temporarily leave you without Wi-Fi.
Install the replacement
- Run the official OEM or Intel installer.
- Choose the full PROSet option only if your adapter and Windows version support it and you need its features.
- Otherwise install the driver-only package.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Wi-Fi, sleep and wake, and the program or login action that produced the error.
If the error disappears but Wi-Fi does not work, the package was probably wrong for the adapter or Windows release. Return to Device Manager and verify the adapter model before trying another installer.
Fix 3: Remove obsolete PROSet when Wi-Fi already works
On a modern Windows installation, an old PROSet utility may be the only broken part. If Wi-Fi works through Windows and you do not use an OEM wireless management feature, uninstalling the obsolete utility may be the correct fix.

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Intel wireless software.
- Uninstall Intel PROSet/Wireless Software.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the Intel adapter remains enabled in Device Manager.
- Connect to Wi-Fi from Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi.
If Windows reports that the network adapter driver is missing after removal, install the correct driver-only package from the computer manufacturer or Intel. The driver and the PROSet utility are separate components.
Do not delete an ifrmewrk.exe or ZCfgSvc.exe file manually. Remove its parent software through its uninstaller so Windows does not retain a broken startup entry.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine after malware cleanup
A missing Intel DLL can follow malware removal, especially if a security product deleted files from a damaged or suspicious installation. Do not restore a file solely because its name is psregapi.dll.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an item for details before taking action.
If the item is clearly part of a verified Intel or OEM installation and the detection was a false positive, follow the security product’s restore process. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again if it remains unsafe.
The safer route is usually:
- Leave the suspicious copy quarantined.
- Run Scan options → Full scan.
- Remove the damaged Intel package.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete package from the official OEM or Intel source.
Fix 5: Check for a version or architecture mismatch
An entry point not found error is different from a simple missing-file error. It usually means the executable found a DLL, but the DLL does not contain the function that executable expects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis often happens when:
- A newer driver was installed over an older PROSet utility.
- An uninstall stopped partway through.
- Files were copied from another computer.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit component were mixed.
- An old disk image restored only some Intel files.
Do not replace only psregapi.dll. Uninstall the Intel wireless software and reinstall all related components from one matched package.
The known historical file information commonly shown in public catalogs includes a 64-bit 15.5.0.0 variant of about 0.17 MB, but that does not identify every release. Other historical versions exist, and package version numbers are not always the same as individual driver version numbers.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC does not normally recreate psregapi.dll because this is not a protected Windows system file. Use Windows repair commands only if you also have broader corruption, such as failing Windows features, damaged system applications, or repeated operating-system errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components, not Intel’s proprietary PROSet files. If the DLL error remains, repair or reinstall PROSet instead of repeatedly running SFC.

If you prefer a guided repair utility while checking corrupted Windows components, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it finds; its repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for this Intel-specific fix.
Fix 7: Roll back a recent change with System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver update, software installation, or malware cleanup.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point, if offered.
- Pick a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert drivers, installed programs, registry settings, and system files without normally affecting personal documents. It will not reliably repair a package that remains mismatched, so reinstall the correct Intel software afterward if necessary.

Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading a loose DLL is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to another Intel release, use the wrong architecture, or lack the dependent files needed by the calling program. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create new loader errors.
Use only:
- The computer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Intel’s official wireless driver and PROSet pages.
- An official OEM recovery image or installer.
The complete package is the fix, not the filename by itself.
FAQ
Is psregapi.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to Intel PROSet/Wireless software and is not a standard Windows DLL.
Which program usually calls it?
Historical reports identify Intel utilities including ifrmewrk.exe and ZCfgSvc.exe. The message may appear during startup or sign-in.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. Those packages do not provide psregapi.dll. Install them only when the complete error separately identifies a missing Microsoft runtime component.
What if the file exists but Windows still cannot load it?
A dependency may be missing, or the file may not match the calling executable. Reinstall the complete Intel package rather than copying over the visible file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need PROSet on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Often not. Many systems need only the Wi-Fi driver. If Wi-Fi works and no OEM or enterprise feature requires PROSet, uninstalling the obsolete utility may remove the startup error.
Should I use Windows Features to enable something?
There is no Windows Feature that supplies psregapi.dll. You can open Settings → Optional features to confirm that no relevant feature is involved, but enabling random Windows components will not restore Intel PROSet.
What if the error remains after reinstalling?
Record the calling executable, full error text, adapter model, Windows version, DLL path, file version, digital-signature status, and the change that preceded the problem. That information distinguishes a missing file from a dependency failure or a mismatched Intel package.
