“defragproxy.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because defragproxy.dll is missing from your computer,” and “Error loading defragproxy.dll” all point to the same immediate problem: Windows or an application cannot load a required DLL. The file named defragproxy.dll is normally a Microsoft Drive Optimizer system component, not a Visual C++ runtime or a DLL that should be downloaded separately.
The 60-second answer
Do not download defragproxy.dll from a DLL repository or copy a random version into System32.

Use this order:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM, then SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart again and retry the affected program.
- If the error remains, check antivirus quarantine, verify the file path and Microsoft signature, and determine whether Windows Drive Optimizer or a third-party disk utility is making the request.
Microsoft documents running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source.

C:WindowsSystem32defragproxy.dll
It is associated with the Microsoft-Windows-Defrag-Core component and related files such as defragsvc.dll, defragres.dll, and dfrgui.exe.
The exact version, file size, hash, and architecture depend on the installed Windows release and build. Do not use a Windows 7, Windows 10, or Windows 11 copy interchangeably.
Although a third-party utility may trigger the error while calling Windows optimization features, that does not make defragproxy.dll an ordinary application dependency. Repair Windows first. Repair or reinstall the named third-party utility only after the Windows component is healthy.
Read the exact error
Reported variants include:
defragproxy.dll was not foundThe program can't start because defragproxy.dll is missing from your computerError loading defragproxy.dllThe specified module could not be foundCannot register defragproxy.dlldefragproxy.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error
The first two usually mean that the file is missing, inaccessible, or corrupted. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency needed by the DLL is unavailable. A “not designed to run on Windows” message often indicates a damaged binary or the wrong architecture.
These messages may appear when opening Drive Optimizer, a system maintenance task, or a third-party disk utility. The wording alone does not identify which program is broken.
Check the file before repairing it
1. Check the location
Open File Explorer and enter this in the address bar:
%SystemRoot%System32
Look for defragproxy.dll.
A copy in System32 is consistent with the normal Windows installation. A copy in a download folder, temporary folder, user profile, or unrelated application directory is suspicious. Do not replace the System32 copy with one found elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Check the publisher and signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, and review:
- General: file name and location
- Details: description, company, product, and version information
- Digital Signatures: signer and signature status
The expected publisher is Microsoft Corporation. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the digital signature as valid.
A missing signature, an invalid signature, or a Microsoft-named file outside the Windows directory requires caution. Do not assume that renaming or moving the file will fix the error.
3. Check System32 versus SysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains 64-bit Windows system binaries.SysWOW64supports 32-bit system components through Windows WOW64.
The directory names are confusing, but copying files between them is not a valid repair method. Do not download both x86 and x64 versions and try each one. The correct file is installed and serviced according to the Windows build and the process loading it.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An interrupted or incomplete update can leave Windows servicing files inconsistent.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Retry the program that reported the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If Windows Update fails, restart once and try again before moving to DISM. If the update repeatedly fails, the component store may need repair.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of defragproxy.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window just because the percentage appears to pause.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Then restart Windows.
Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. Investigate the calling application, quarantine history, or a dependency named in the next error.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, inspect the CBS log if necessary, and continue to the recovery options below.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair for this system DLL.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation as a repair source. An example is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
That source must match the installed Windows version and architecture closely enough for servicing. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary copied Windows folder.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection, or malware may have attempted to replace it.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Security on Windows 10.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
defragproxy.dll.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

- Video Link to instructions and Free support VIA Amazon
- Great Support fast responce
- 15 plus years of experiance
- Key is included
- The original path was under
%SystemRoot%System32. - The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- The detection is clearly identified as a false positive.
- Your security software or Microsoft guidance supports restoring it.
Do not restore an unsigned file merely because its name is defragproxy.dll. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. Run a full scan after handling the quarantine entry.
If files continue disappearing, run a full security scan and check whether the disk is developing read errors.

Fix 4: Determine whether a third-party utility is failing
A disk optimizer, defragmentation utility, or maintenance application may call Windows Drive Optimizer functionality. Secondary reporting has associated this type of error with the defragmentation module in Ashampoo WinOptimizer, but Microsoft does not document that as a universal cause.
Use the program named in the error:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the disk utility or maintenance program.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the latest installer only from that software vendor’s official website.
- Reinstall the program and test it again.
If Windows Drive Optimizer itself fails while other applications work, the Windows component is the stronger suspect. If only one utility fails after DISM and SFC report no corruption, the utility is more likely damaged.
Do not install Visual C++ redistributables solely to fix defragproxy.dll. This file is not a Visual C++ runtime. Install a runtime only when the error names a specific runtime DLL.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the problem started immediately after an update, cleanup operation, driver installation, or utility installation.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and choose Finish.
- Restart and test the failing program.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without changing personal documents. It cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.
Fix 6: Update a related driver only when evidence points there
A storage controller or disk driver can cause broader disk-management failures, but updating a driver does not replace or repair defragproxy.dll.
Use Device Manager only when Device Manager, Event Viewer, or the application log identifies a related device problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Storage controllers, Disk drives, and, where relevant, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can remove the guesswork of checking many device entries and stale driver versions; its free scan identifies detected driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version. Use it only as an optional convenience, not as a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that support COM self-registration through DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing or corrupted Windows files.
Running this command is not a normal fix:
regsvr32 defragproxy.dll
A registration error does not prove that the file is missing, and successful registration would not repair a damaged Windows component store. Use DISM and SFC instead.
What not to do
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Downloading
defragproxy.dllfrom a random DLL website - Copying a downloaded DLL into
System32 - Copying the file into the folder of the application that reported the error
- Mixing files from different Windows releases
- Trying both 32-bit and 64-bit copies at random
- Using registry cleaners or generic “DLL fixer” utilities
- Running
regsvr32repeatedly - Disabling antivirus protection permanently
A downloaded DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or lack the dependencies required by the program. There is no official standalone Microsoft download for this file. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows servicing, System Restore, Windows recovery, or a verified matching Windows installation source.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file
If both tools report that they cannot repair the component:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Restart and run Windows Update again.
- Run DISM with a matching repair source.
- Review the CBS log for the affected component.
- Use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or the equivalent Windows 10 recovery settings.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair or reset after backing up important data.
If the error persists after Windows repair, open Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, or the affected program’s own logs. Identify the process that is requesting defragproxy.dll. The next error may name another missing DLL, which can reveal that the application itself, rather than Windows Drive Optimizer, is damaged.
FAQ
Is defragproxy.dll safe?
A Microsoft-signed copy under %SystemRoot%System32 is consistent with the normal Windows component. Verify both the path and the digital signature. A copy in a temporary or application folder deserves further investigation.
Should I download defragproxy.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or Windows recovery. Do not replace the file with an unverified download.
Is defragproxy.dll part of DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++?
No. It is associated with Windows Drive Optimizer. Installing those runtimes is irrelevant unless the error also names a runtime DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does a third-party program mention this Windows file?
A disk utility may call Windows Drive Optimizer functionality. Repair Windows first, then repair or reinstall the named utility if it is the only program still failing.
Does the System32 or SysWOW64 copy matter?
Yes. On 64-bit Windows, the directories serve different system-binary paths through WOW64. Do not copy a file between them manually.
What if another DLL is named after the repair?
That usually means the next dependency is also missing or the calling application is damaged. Record the exact new message, identify the calling process, and repair that application or its specifically named runtime rather than replacing files at random.
