Psychological horror is about the kind of fear a game emphasizes: uncertainty, emotional pressure and disturbing implications. Survival horror is about the challenge of staying alive: exploring dangerous spaces, solving problems, managing resources and deciding when to fight or flee. They are overlapping design emphases, not mutually exclusive genres, so a game can do both.
How the two styles differ
| Design question | Psychological horror | Survival horror |
|---|---|---|
| What drives the fear? | Uncertainty, emotional disturbance, troubling interpretations and narrative intensity. | Threats that make survival decisions consequential, including dangerous encounters and the risk of running short on resources. |
| What does the player do? | Interpret events and endure psychological or narrative pressure. This describes an emphasis, not a rule for every game. | Explore, solve puzzles, manage resources, and choose whether to confront or evade danger. |
| What tools create tension? | Atmosphere, mystery, unsettling situations and uncertain meaning. | Vulnerability, exploration, puzzles, limited resources, and risky combat-or-flight decisions. |
| Can a game combine them? | Yes. Psychological storytelling does not rule out physical threats or survival mechanics. | Yes. Survival systems can support an unsettling story and atmosphere. |
What psychological horror emphasizes
Psychological horror puts the player’s interpretation and emotional response near the center. Fear may come from not knowing what is real, what an event means, or what a character’s experiences reveal. Monsters can appear, but the label does not mean a game must avoid combat or physical danger.

Konami explicitly describes SILENT HILL 2 as psychological horror. Its October 19, 2022 announcement follows James Sunderland as he searches the town for clues after receiving a letter from his long-dead wife, and says the remake reworks eerie monsters and other manifestations of James’s consciousness. Konami’s announcement makes it a clear example of psychological horror framing monsters as part of a character’s disturbing inner world.
What survival horror emphasizes
Survival horror makes the practical struggle to stay alive a defining part of play. Players typically face threats while exploring, solving puzzles and making consequential decisions about resources and encounters. Scarce ammunition can contribute to that pressure, but it is not the whole genre: exploration, vulnerability and puzzle-solving matter too.

In a Capcom developer interview, Resident Evil 7 biohazard producer Masachika Kawata and director Koshi Nakanishi discuss the series’ core pillars as fear and horror, environmental exploration, puzzle-solving, resource management and combat. They also explain that the game’s demo foregrounded horror and exploration. The example shows that a survival-oriented play loop can still put fear first. Read Capcom’s developer interview.
Survival does not mean helplessness
A survival-horror protagonist is often vulnerable, but not necessarily unable to fight back. The intended tension comes from the difficulty and cost of surviving, not from a universal ban on combat.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
In a 2011 report on Silent Hill: Downpour, design director Brian Gomez described deliberately weakening the player through slower pacing, puzzles, exploration and a survivor protagonist. He said: “In survival horror games, this means dis-empowering the player, something that as game designers we are often taught not to do.” That is Gomez’s design perspective, not a rule that every survival-horror game must follow. Game Developer’s report provides the context.
Why the labels overlap
The distinction is mainly about emphasis: psychological horror describes the mental and emotional effect a game pursues, while survival horror describes a threatened, resource-conscious way of playing. A game can make the meaning of its events unsettling while also requiring the player to search dangerous spaces, conserve supplies and handle hostile encounters. Calling one game “psychological” and another “survival” can be useful shorthand, but it does not mean either one lacks the other’s features.

- Fight or Flight- Hunt prey, fight larger enemies and use stealth and agility to sneak past apex predators unnoticed.
- Award Winning- Category winning of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP): Prestigious Playing For The Planet Green Games Jam 2021 Award and the 'Best in Play GDC Award.
- Explore a beautiful world- Explore a living, breathing world full of unique species of plants, insects, and animals. Run, jump, climb, and glide through beautiful environments
- Uncover Hidden Mysteries- Advance through the world and complete the main story, or explore of the beaten path and embark on side quests to uncover Away's hidden mysteries
- Photo Mode- Freeze the sugar glider anywhere and move the camera while the rest of the world continues in ambient motion
That overlap also explains why examples should be described by their specific design choices rather than treated as pure specimens. SILENT HILL 2 is explicitly called psychological horror by Konami, while Capcom’s account of Resident Evil 7 biohazard includes both fear and survival-oriented systems. These are useful examples of emphasis, not exhaustive genre definitions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which style should you choose?
- Choose psychological horror if you want uncertainty, unsettling interpretations and story-driven emotional pressure to lead the experience.
- Choose survival horror if you want exploration, puzzles, resource decisions and risky encounters to shape how you play.
- Look for a blend if you want both a disturbing narrative and concrete decisions about surviving threats.
Publisher categories can help with discovery, but they are not a neutral or universal taxonomy. For example, Bandai Namco Europe’s horror-games category is one publisher’s way of grouping its games, not a standard that settles every genre boundary.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
One useful way to think about the boundary
In a 2014 interview report, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami described horror and entertainment as needing to mix, and said survival horror lets players defeat monsters even when the task is tough. His perspective reinforces the practical distinction: survival horror can offer the possibility of fighting back, while making survival and the danger of doing so part of the experience. PlayStation Universe’s report attributes those comments to Mikami.
