PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS became free-to-play on January 12, 2022, after scheduled maintenance. At launch, PUBG listed Steam, Kakao, Xbox, PlayStation and Stadia, and said Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus was not required to play. That list is historical, not a statement of current support: since November 13, 2025, PUBG Console has been supported only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
When did PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS become free-to-play?
PUBG announced the change on December 10, 2021, then confirmed that free-to-play service began after maintenance on January 12, 2022. The announcement framed the shift as a way to expand the community; it did not publish a verified player-growth figure or other impact statistic.
At the time, the listed platforms were Steam, Kakao, Xbox, PlayStation and Stadia. These are the platforms named for the 2022 transition, not a current platform roster. PUBG’s transition announcement and launch notice document the change.
What did free-to-play change for players?
New players could start with a free Basic account, which included most in-game content. Battlegrounds Plus offered additional features restricted to Plus accounts. The launch notice does not establish a current Plus feature list or price, so those details should not be inferred from the 2022 announcement.

Basic and Battlegrounds Plus
| Account path | What the launch announcement established | Who it applied to |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free account with access to most in-game content | New players entering after the transition |
| Battlegrounds Plus | Additional features restricted to Plus accounts; the launch notice does not establish its current price or a complete current feature list | Players who upgraded, and eligible players who owned the game before the transition |
Eligible people who had purchased PUBG before the transition were upgraded to Plus and received a commemorative pack. The original announcement described platform-specific eligibility and claim arrangements, so that benefit should not be treated as identical for every prior purchase on every platform.
Did console players need PS Plus or Xbox Live?
No. In its free-to-play transition announcement, PUBG said an Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus subscription was not required to play PUBG after the change. This answers the subscription question as it was stated for the transition; it is distinct from whether a player needs internet access, a console account or other platform services for their setup.

Which platforms support PUBG now?
The 2022 announcement’s platform list should not be read as today’s availability. Stadia is not a current option, and console support changed on November 13, 2025: PUBG Console support moved to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, ending availability on PS4 and Xbox One. PUBG said existing account data and purchased items would remain available when players moved to a supported current-generation console. See the official console service notice for that transition.
