For a first watch, begin with the 2011 Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV series, watch all 12 episodes, then watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. Treat Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story as optional. If you prefer films, replace the TV series with Beginnings and Eternal, the first two theatrical movies that recap the original story, and then watch Rebellion.
The recommended first-watch order
The simplest order preserves the story’s intended introduction and avoids watching the same opening material twice:

- Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011 TV series) — Watch all 12 episodes in broadcast order. This is the clearest starting point for a new viewer and establishes the characters, setting, rules and central conflict before any film continuation.
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion — Watch this after the television series. It is the next main-story film in the practical viewing route.
- Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story (optional) — Watch only if you want a separate story centered on Iroha and the city of Kamihama. It is not required to understand the original series-to-Rebellion path.
This order is intentionally short: one complete series, one main-story movie, and an optional side story. It does not require you to watch every available adaptation.
Why the 2011 series should usually come first
The original anime is a 12-episode television production from 2011. Its episodic format lets a first-time viewer learn the premise and character relationships in the order the series presents them. Because the episodes are the baseline version most viewing guides use, later choices become easier: you can decide whether to sample the recap films, continue to Rebellion, or branch into Magia Record without wondering which version you were supposed to see first.

Starting with the TV series also prevents a common first-watch problem: the first two theatrical films cover the same broad opening-story route in a compressed feature-film format. Watching both the complete 12-episode series and both recap films before reaching Rebellion is unnecessary unless your goal is to compare presentations. Pick one opening route.
How the movies fit into the order
Beginnings and Eternal: the film route through the opening story
The first two theatrical movies, Beginnings and Eternal, provide an alternate film route through the original television story. They are useful for viewers who prefer feature films, want a more concentrated watch, or are revisiting the material in theatrical form.
Use them instead of the TV series on a first pass, not in addition to it. After the two films, continue to Rebellion. The available official listings establish the three-film group, while the practical viewing convention is to treat the first two as the recap route and Rebellion as the next main-story film. The available material does not establish a scene-by-scene inventory of changes, so descriptions of exact additions, removals or reordered scenes should not be treated as settled viewing facts.

Rebellion: watch after your chosen opening route
Rebellion belongs after either the 12-episode series or the two-film recap route. If you watch it before learning the original story, character motivations and the film’s place in the larger narrative will be harder to follow. In a first-watch plan, do not place Magia Record between the opening story and Rebellion; the side story is optional and does not function as a prerequisite.
TV series or recap films?
| Opening option | Format | Best for | What it replaces |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2011 TV series | 12 episodes | First-time viewers who want the original episodic presentation and the most gradual introduction | Nothing; this is the standard starting route |
| Beginnings + Eternal | Two theatrical feature films | Viewers who prefer a concentrated film experience or an alternate presentation | The 12-episode opening route on a first pass |
| Rebellion | Main-story theatrical film | Viewers who have completed either opening route and want the next film | Neither opening route; it follows them |
| Magia Record | Side-story anime | Viewers interested in Iroha’s story and Kamihama | Nothing; it is optional |
The meaningful choice is format and pacing, not a need to collect every version before progressing. The TV series gives you twelve separate installments; the first two films give you two feature-length presentations of the opening material. The available official information does not support a definitive scene-by-scene comparison, so choose based on how you prefer to watch rather than on unverified claims about a particular cut.

Are the Madoka Magica movies remakes or continuations?
They are not all the same kind of movie. Beginnings and Eternal are the alternate film route through the original story, so they occupy the recap-adaptation role in a watch order. Rebellion is the next main-story film and should be watched after the original series or after the two recap films. Calling every movie a remake obscures that distinction, while treating the first two as mandatory sequels creates the opposite mistake.
A useful rule is: choose either the 12-episode series or the first two films to learn the opening story; then move to Rebellion. Save detailed version-comparison questions for a rewatch, when you already know the narrative and can evaluate presentation differences without interrupting your first introduction.
Where the 2025 TV Edition belongs
What it is
The official listing for the 2025 Beginnings/Eternal TV Edition describes it as a television edition of the two-part film story. Japanese broadcasting began on October 12, 2025. In practical terms, it offers a television presentation of the material represented by those two films.
How to use it in a watch plan
For a new viewer, the 2025 TV Edition is an alternate presentation of the earlier part of the story, not a replacement that displaces the usual recommendation of the 2011 series. If you choose it, use it as your opening route and do not also watch the complete original series plus both recap films before moving on. If you already know the story, it can be a convenient way to revisit the film material in a television-edition format.
The broadcast date applies to Japanese television. It does not by itself establish when the edition will appear in other countries or on every streaming service. Check the catalog available in your country before planning a marathon.

What each entry contributes
The 2011 TV series
- Introduces the core premise in an episodic structure.
- Provides the most straightforward first-time starting point.
- Establishes the context needed before watching the next main-story film.
Beginnings and Eternal
- Offer a two-film alternative to the 12-episode opening route.
- Suit viewers who prefer feature-film pacing.
- Should not be stacked with the complete TV series on a normal first viewing.
Rebellion
- Occupies the next main-story position after the original route.
- Can follow either the TV series or the two recap films.
- Should not be treated as an entry point for someone who has not seen the opening story.
Magia Record
- Centers on Iroha’s story in Kamihama.
- Functions as a side story rather than a required chapter of the original viewing path.
- Can be watched after the main route when you want additional world and character material.
Choose the order that matches your goal
If this is your first time
- Watch all 12 episodes of the 2011 TV series.
- Watch Rebellion.
- Watch Magia Record only if its Iroha-and-Kamihama storyline interests you.
This is the least confusing route because it uses the original episodic presentation and postpones the optional branch until the main path is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you only want films
- Watch Beginnings.
- Watch Eternal.
- Watch Rebellion.
Do not insert the 12-episode series between the two recap films. The point of this route is to experience the opening story in its two-film form.
If you want the 2025 television edition
- Use the 2025 Beginnings/Eternal TV Edition as your opening presentation.
- Continue to Rebellion after completing that edition.
- Add Magia Record later if you want the optional side story.
This treats the 2025 edition as an alternate way to watch the earlier film story, rather than as a newly required first chapter.
If you are comparing adaptations on a rewatch
- Watch the 2011 series first, so you have the complete episodic baseline.
- Watch Beginnings and Eternal as the alternate film presentation.
- Watch the 2025 TV Edition if you want to examine how the two-film story is presented in television form.
- Finish with Rebellion in the position it occupies in the main-story route.
This is the one situation in which viewing multiple opening versions is purposeful. It is a comparison plan, not the efficient first-watch order.

Streaming availability is territory- and time-sensitive. Japanese listings identify services and distribution schedules for that market, but those listings do not establish global availability. A title may be present in one country’s catalog, absent in another, or added and removed on different dates.

- Confirm availability on the date you plan to watch, especially for the 2025 TV Edition.
- Verify that the listing is the exact series, film or TV edition you intend to use; similar titles can represent different formats.
- If you choose physical media, confirm region compatibility and the specific edition before buying. A listing for a Blu-ray release does not by itself establish inventory, playback region or current availability.
The original TV series has an official Blu-ray box set, and Blu-ray volumes for Magia Record are listed by Aniplex of America. Those listings identify physical releases; they do not guarantee that a particular retailer has stock or that a disc will play in your region.
Common watch-order mistakes
Watching every opening version before continuing
The TV series, the first two films and the 2025 TV Edition all cover the earlier portion of the franchise’s story in different presentation formats. Watching all of them first is valid for comparison, but it is not necessary for understanding Rebellion. Pick one opening route unless you specifically want to study adaptations.
Starting with Rebellion
Because Rebellion is a main-story film rather than the recommended introduction, starting there removes the setup that the TV series or recap films are designed to provide. Move it after one complete opening route.
Treating Magia Record as required homework
Magia Record is a side story centered on Iroha in Kamihama. It is an optional branch, so postponing it does not leave a gap in the basic series-to-Rebellion route.
Assuming one country’s streaming list applies everywhere
Platform listings and distribution schedules can change by territory and date. Use a current local catalog rather than relying on a listing from another country or an older schedule.
One-page decision guide
- Want the clearest first experience? Watch the 2011 TV series, then Rebellion.
- Prefer two movies to twelve episodes? Watch Beginnings, then Eternal, then Rebellion.
- Interested in the 2025 broadcast presentation? Use the Beginnings/Eternal TV Edition as your opening route, then continue to Rebellion.
- Want more material after the main route? Add Magia Record for Iroha’s Kamihama side story.
- Want to compare versions? Watch the original series first, then the two recap films and, if desired, the 2025 TV Edition.
The key distinction is simple: the 2011 series is the recommended starting point, the first two theatrical films are an alternate route through that opening story, Rebellion follows as the next main-story film, and Magia Record is optional.
