pxclib40.dll is a legacy PDF-XChange/PDF-Tools SDK library from Tracker Software, not a Windows system file. When Windows says it is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the PDF-XChange-based application that originally installed it.
Do not download pxclib40.dll from a random DLL website, copy it into System32, or register it with regsvr32. The application normally needs the complete, matching PDF-XChange runtime set, including companion files.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the parent application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program using it. It may belong to an older PDF-processing application, business program, SDK-based utility, scanner workflow, or another vendor’s software that redistributed PDF-XChange components.

First, note when the error appears:
- Immediately after signing into Windows
- When opening a PDF
- When launching a document-management or scanning application
- When starting a developer-built business program
- When opening a game or packaged application
That program is the likely parent application.
On Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program that displays the error.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
If there is no Repair option, select Uninstall, restart Windows, and reinstall the application from its original publisher.

On Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options and then Repair, if available.
- If Repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the program from its original installer.
Close the application before repairing it. If the installer offers a repair mode, choose that rather than copying a replacement DLL manually.
How to tell it worked: restart Windows and open the same program or document that previously produced the error. If the program starts normally, the installation was incomplete or damaged.
If you cannot identify the parent application, check:
- Settings > Apps > Installed apps for older PDF, scanning, publishing, accounting, or document-management software.
- Task Manager > Startup apps for programs that launch with Windows.
- The shortcut’s location by right-clicking it and selecting Open file location.
- Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs > Application around the time of the failure.
- Antivirus history for the name of the program that owned the quarantined file.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete PDF-XChange runtime
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A missing-file message does not always mean only pxclib40.dll is absent. PDF-XChange SDK applications commonly require additional files, including:
XCPRO40.dllxccdx40.dlldscrt40.dll
Feature-specific installations may also require libraries such as ixclib40.dll, fm40base.dll, fm40tiff.dll, netlib40.dll, or xcscan40.dll.
The correct repair is to restore the complete runtime package supplied with the parent application.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or obtain the original installer from your organization’s software administrator.
- Install the program using an administrator account.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring custom settings or plugins.
If the software is a current PDF-XChange product, use Tracker Software’s official product installer. If it is an older business application, contact that application’s vendor for the exact installer or runtime package. Do not substitute a similarly named newer DLL.
A legitimate deployment normally places the DLL beside the application executable, or in the vendor’s application runtime directory. It should not require copying files into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
How to tell it worked: the application should start without the missing-file message, and PDF operations should complete without a second “module could not be found” error.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
PDF-XChange SDK components must match the architecture of the process loading them:
- A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit PDF-XChange DLL set.
- A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit PDF-XChange DLL set.
- A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit software, but it cannot make a 32-bit DLL load into a 64-bit process.
Mixing architectures can produce:
BadImageFormatException- “This application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “Unable to load DLL”
- A missing-file message even though the named file is present
To check the application architecture:
- Open the application.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process appears with “(32 bit)” after its name.

How to tell it worked: the application loads without BadImageFormatException, and the error does not change into a failure naming another PDF-XChange DLL.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a DLL during an update or after an installation change. Do not disable antivirus protection or download an unverified replacement.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
pxclib40.dllor the parent application. - Confirm that the file path belongs to the installed application.
- If the application and publisher are trusted, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Immediately repair or reinstall the parent application.
If the detection remains suspicious, leave the file quarantined and contact the software publisher or security vendor. A legitimate file should be restored from the original trusted installation, not from a third-party download page.

Fix 5: Install Microsoft Visual C++ only when a dependency requires it
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
pxclib40.dll is not the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. It is a PDF-XChange SDK library. Installing Visual C++ will not replace it.
A missing Microsoft runtime can still prevent the PDF-XChange library from loading. If the application documentation, installer, or dependency diagnostic identifies a Visual C++ runtime, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Then:
- Download the required package from Microsoft.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the repair or install option.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the parent application.
Installing both x86 and x64 packages can be appropriate on a computer that runs both types of applications, but neither package supplies pxclib40.dll.
How to tell it worked: the error changes from a dependency-loading failure to normal application startup. If Windows still reports that pxclib40.dll itself is missing, repair the parent application instead.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They are relevant when several Windows features are failing or when an application installer will not run, but they are not a source for replacing a third-party PDF-XChange DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the parent application installer or repair operation.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. For Microsoft’s instructions, see System File Checker.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies, while the full version performs the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling the PDF-XChange-based application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
How to tell it worked: Windows reports that repairs completed, the installer runs successfully, and the parent application starts. If only pxclib40.dll remains affected, return to the application reinstall step.
Fix 7: Update the application and relevant device drivers
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
The DLL itself is not a device driver, and Device Manager will not reinstall it. Driver checks are useful when the affected program depends on a scanner, printer, graphics device, or storage controller and began failing after a Windows or hardware change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a scanner or printer application, install the current driver and application package from the hardware manufacturer. For graphics-related PDF rendering problems, update the display driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer.
Manually hunting through hardware categories and guessing which of many drivers is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues, while the full version performs driver installation; it is optional, and reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix for pxclib40.dll.
How to tell it worked: the related device works normally, the application can access it, and the DLL error does not return. Updating a driver will not restore a missing PDF-XChange runtime by itself.

Do not use Windows Features or regsvr32 for this DLL
Windows optional features do not normally provide pxclib40.dll. Do not enable random features to chase this error.
To review them:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Review installed features without adding unrelated components.
Also, do not run:
regsvr32 pxclib40.dll
Tracker’s application DLLs are normally loaded directly by the program and do not require COM registration. regsvr32 is intended for registerable components such as certain COM or ActiveX DLLs. It does not repair a missing dependency or an architecture mismatch.
What usually caused the error
The likely causes, in order, are:
| Cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete update, uninstall, or installation | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| Companion DLLs omitted | Restore the complete matching runtime set |
| 32-bit and 64-bit files mixed | Deploy DLLs matching the application process |
| Antivirus quarantine | Restore only from a trusted installation, then repair |
| Missing Microsoft runtime dependency | Install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ package |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Legacy software no longer carrying its SDK files | Obtain the exact installer from the software vendor |
If the application crashes with an access violation inside pxclib40.dll, that is a different problem from a missing-file error. It can involve incompatible companion files, incorrect API use, or a damaged PDF. Replacing the DLL blindly is unlikely to solve it.
FAQ
Is pxclib40.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the legacy Tracker Software PDF-XChange/PDF-Tools SDK family and is supplied by an application that uses those components.
Is pxclib40.dll the Visual C++ runtime?
No. Microsoft Visual C++ packages provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. They do not provide pxclib40.dll.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
The correct architecture depends on the application loading it. Some legacy distributions contain 32-bit builds, while official SDK deployment also supports 64-bit scenarios. Never mix the two sets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does Windows say it is missing when I can see it?
The file may be in the wrong directory, one of its companion DLLs may be missing, or its architecture may not match the process. “Module not found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named file.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Keep the vendor-supplied runtime beside the application executable or in the application’s designated runtime directory.
What if the program is a game or launcher?
Use the launcher’s Verify or Repair function only if that launcher originally installed the affected program. Otherwise, use the original application vendor’s installer.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it only if the failure began after a recent application or system change and a suitable restore point exists. A clean reinstall from the original publisher is usually more targeted.
