In Dark Souls, pyromancies are spells cast with the Pyromancy Flame. To use one, prepare it at a bonfire, equip the flame, select the spell, then cast using the input for the hand holding the flame. Your Attunement slots limit how many spells you can prepare, and most spells have limited uses that return when you rest at a bonfire.
What pyromancies are in Dark Souls
Pyromancies are one of the game’s magic categories, alongside sorceries and miracles. They are not physical products: the Pyromancy Flame is the in-game casting tool used to perform them. The flame reference lists several ways to obtain it, including choosing the Pyromancer starting class and interactions with characters in the world; those are community-reference routes rather than official instructions.
How to prepare and cast a pyromancy
- Prepare the spell: At a bonfire, open Magic Attunement and equip an acquired pyromancy in an available Attunement slot. The number of spells you can prepare depends on your character’s Attunement slots, as described in the bonfire instructions.
- Equip the casting tool: Put the Pyromancy Flame in either hand. FromSoftware’s Dark Souls: Remastered manual groups pyromancy with sorcery and miracles and instructs players to equip the corresponding catalyst in the left or right hand.
- Select and cast: Select the prepared spell, then use the casting input for the hand holding the flame. The manual’s rule applies to magic generally; the exact button depends on your control setup.
- Restore uses: Most spells have a limited number of uses. Rest at a bonfire to replenish them.
Choosing and collecting pyromancies
Spell choice is about the situation, not just the category: consider whether you need a ranged attack, a close-range option, or a utility effect, along with the spell’s uses, Attunement-slot cost, how you can acquire it, and your flame’s upgrade state. The available references do not establish a complete comparison of damage, stat scaling, or optimal builds, so those should not be inferred from spell names alone.
The Dark Souls Wiki lists 20 pyromancies for the original game, including Acid Surge, Black Flame, and Chaos Fire Whip. It describes Acid Surge as creating an acidic cloud that affects enemy equipment, Black Flame as a close-range attack that can break guards, and Chaos Fire Whip as a sweeping attack that leaves lava. This is a community list, not a dated official count; check the intended edition for spell details before following a collection route.
