Start with this quick checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program displays the error. Public evidence associates
qt_supp_ex.dllmainly with Acronis True Image and related Acronis installations. - Whether the message says the file is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or has an entry-point error.
- Whether the problem began after uninstalling, updating, cleaning, restoring, or quarantining Acronis.
- Whether the affected Acronis installation is under
C:Program FilesAcronisorC:Program Files (x86)Acronis. - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit Acronis program can use
Program Files (x86)even on 64-bit Windows.

qt_supp_ex.dll is an application DLL associated with Acronis software, particularly Acronis True Image. qt_supp_ex.dll is not a normal Windows component and should not be copied into System32 or SysWOW64.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Acronis
A damaged or incomplete Acronis installation is the most likely cause. Failed updates, partial uninstallations, cleanup software, and file-system problems can remove an application-private DLL while leaving shortcuts or startup services behind.

Try the available repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Acronis True Image or the relevant Acronis-branded product.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and open Acronis again.
If no repair option appears, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Acronis product.
- Choose Change or Repair, if offered.
- Restart when the process finishes.
A successful repair should allow the original Acronis program to start without the qt_supp_ex.dll message. It should also restore the DLL beside the Acronis executable rather than placing it in a Windows system directory.
Reinstall the matching Acronis product
Before removing Acronis, preserve any backup configuration, scheduled jobs, encryption details, and license information you still need.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the affected Acronis product.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from Acronis’s official support or account page. Use the installer for the same product family, edition, and operating system architecture.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch Acronis and test the operation that originally failed.
Do not mix a DLL from an OEM edition, an older True Image release, or another Acronis product with the installed application. A mismatched file can replace a missing-file error with an entry-point, dependency, or “not designed to run on Windows” error.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. Acronis documentation describes quarantine as a location from which detected files may be restored, but restoring a file is safe only when its origin is clear.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Acronis or
qt_supp_ex.dll. - If the file is in quarantine, confirm that the affected Acronis installation is genuine and that the detection is not identifying a modified or suspicious copy.
- Restore or allow the file only when it belongs to the expected Acronis installation.
- Reinstall Acronis from its official installer if you are uncertain.
- Run a full scan after restoring or reinstalling.
If antivirus repeatedly removes the DLL, do not keep restoring it blindly. Record the detection name and scan the installer and system. A suspicious location, invalid digital signature, or repeated deletion can indicate an unauthorized replacement rather than a simple missing file.
Fix 3: Verify the file location and signature
The strongest location evidence places this file inside the Acronis application directory, commonly one of these:
C:Program FilesAcronisTrueImageHome
C:Program Files (x86)AcronisTrueImageHome
Those paths are examples, not a guarantee for every Acronis release.

To inspect the file:
- Press Windows + E.
- Browse to the Acronis installation folder.
- Search for
qt_supp_ex.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Check the Details tab and note the file description, product information, and size.
- Compare the location with the executable that generated the error.
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. A copy in a temporary folder, a user profile, a downloads folder, or an unrelated program directory deserves further scanning. Do not use a random DLL download site to replace it. Such files can contain malware, match the wrong Acronis build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the original installation problem unresolved.
Fix 4: Separate a missing dependency from a missing DLL
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that qt_supp_ex.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Install Visual C++ only when the error identifies one of those runtime files or another dependency.
- Open Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Choose the package matching the application architecture.
- Install x86 for a 32-bit Acronis application, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Install x64 for a 64-bit application.
- Install the legacy Visual C++ version named by the error when required, rather than assuming the newest package replaces every older runtime.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Acronis again.
Installing Visual C++ is not the normal fix for a plain “qt_supp_ex.dll is missing” message. Repairing or reinstalling the complete Acronis application is the correct first response.
Fix 5: Do not copy the DLL or run Regsvr32
Do not copy qt_supp_ex.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows-managed components and shared system libraries. Placing an application-private DLL there can cause version conflicts, DLL hijacking risk, and problems during later Acronis updates.

regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It applies to self-registering components that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The available evidence identifiesqt_supp_ex.dll` as a Qt support library used by Acronis, not as a COM server.
Do not run:
regsvr32 qt_supp_ex.dll
unless Acronis specifically instructs you to register that exact build. If you already ran it and received an error, reinstall the Acronis product instead.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
qt_supp_ex.dll is not evidenced as a protected Windows system file, so SFC and DISM are not the first-line solution. Use them when several unrelated applications fail, Windows reports broader corruption, or the Acronis installer itself cannot operate correctly.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Acronis again.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
SFC can repair protected Windows files, but it will not normally recreate an application DLL that belongs to Acronis.

When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs repairs, but reinstalling Acronis remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Check drivers only for broader system symptoms
A graphics or chipset driver is not a likely direct cause of a missing Acronis support DLL. Do not begin with generic driver updates unless Acronis is accompanied by display failures, crashes in several applications, or a recent hardware change.
For a driver check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and review the provider and date.
- Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.

If the error began immediately after a system change and repair or reinstall did not work, System Restore may return the system to an earlier state.

rstrui
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test Acronis.
System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling Acronis and may remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point.
If reinstalling Acronis still fails
Collect these details before contacting Acronis support:
- The exact application name and edition.
- The application version shown in its installer or product information.
- The complete error text.
- The full path named by the error.
- Whether
qt_supp_ex.dllexists in that directory. - The file’s Digital Signatures and Details information.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined it.
- Any companion error naming
MSVCP120.dll,MSVCR120.dll, or another dependency. - Whether the failure occurs at Windows startup or only when opening Acronis.
If the error appears only after Acronis was removed, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable a stale Acronis startup entry. For a persistent service or scheduled task, use Acronis’s supported removal procedure rather than deleting random files from Windows folders.

If many unrelated programs report DLL failures, scan for malware, check disk health, review recent system changes, and investigate Windows corruption. If only Acronis reports qt_supp_ex.dll, stay focused on that installation.
