If Windows shows “The program can’t start because qt5script.dll is missing from your computer,” the affected application cannot load one of its Qt runtime libraries. A “qt5script.dll was not found” or “cannot load library” message usually means the application installation is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or using an incompatible dependency.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL into System32. Qt5Script.dll belongs to Qt 5’s QtScript module and is normally supplied by the application that needs it. The safest repair is to identify that application and restore its complete, matching runtime package.

What qt5script.dll is
Qt5Script.dll is a Qt 5 application library. QtScript provides ECMAScript, commonly called JavaScript, scripting features for C++ and Qt programs. It is a legacy Qt module retained mainly for compatibility with older applications.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
It is not a standard Windows component. It should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Qt applications generally keep their required DLLs beside the application executable or within the program’s deployment folder.
The exact file is not universal. Applications may use different Qt releases, compiler builds, architectures, configuration settings, and vendor modifications. A 32-bit application requires a 32-bit build, while a 64-bit application requires a 64-bit build. A 64-bit version of Windows can run either type of application, so the bitness of Windows alone does not tell you which DLL is required.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely solution.
Identify the program
- Write down the full error and the moment it appears.
- Check the title bar of the error dialog.
- Note which program, game, launcher, utility, or installer you started.
- If the message appeared after clicking a shortcut, right-click that shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look at the folder containing the application executable.
Qt5Script.dllnormally belongs there or in a nearby deployment folder.
If you cannot identify the program, open Settings with Windows + I, select Apps, then Installed apps. Sort by installation date and look for software installed or updated when the error began.
Use the program’s repair option
For a conventional desktop program:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not work, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
For a game or launcher, open its library, select the affected title, and look for Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or a similar command. The launcher should compare the installation with its official package and restore missing files.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair fails:
- Back up saved games, projects, profiles, templates, or other application data.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer or use the developer’s official launcher.
- Install the program to its normal location.
- Start it before restoring custom files or plugins.
Do not install Qt separately unless the application’s developer specifically instructs you to. A vendor may ship a private, patched, or differently compiled Qt build, and a generic Qt installation may not satisfy that program.
Success looks like: the application opens without the Qt5Script.dll message and its normal features work. If another Qt DLL is then named, reinstall the complete application again rather than adding isolated files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 2: Restore the file from antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application DLL after an update, file change, or detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand an entry associated with the affected application folder.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate application installation.
- If you trust that installation and the developer supplied it, select Restore or Allow on device, depending on the available option.
- Update the application from its official source.
- Run a new antivirus scan.
- Start the application.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the error disappear. If the file was found in an unexpected folder, has no connection to the application, or has a suspicious signature, leave it quarantined and contact the application developer.
If the file was restored but disappears again, the application may be damaged or the detection may be valid. Reinstall the program from its official installer instead of repeatedly restoring the same file.
Fix 3: Check architecture and adjacent dependencies
A DLL can exist and still fail to load.
Common causes include:
- A 32-bit application paired with a 64-bit Qt library.
- A 64-bit application paired with a 32-bit Qt library.
- Qt DLLs from different releases mixed together.
- MSVC-built files mixed with MinGW-built files.
Qt5Core.dll,Qt5Gui.dll, or a platform plugin missing.- A compiler runtime missing or incompatible.
- A DLL copied from another application.
Check the application’s installation folder. Look for Qt5Core.dll, Qt5Gui.dll, Qt5Script.dll, and other Qt files. They should normally come from the same application package and have a consistent modification date or installation source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not replace one file with a copy from another program. Even if the names match, the Qt version, compiler family, architecture, or vendor build may differ.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of Qt5Script.dll is missing. “Entry point not found” more often indicates that related Qt DLLs do not match. In both cases, repair or redeploy the complete application.
Fix 4: Install the required Visual C++ runtime
If the error also names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or a side-by-side runtime, the application may need the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Check the application documentation or installer to determine whether it requires x86 or x64 components.
- Download the redistributable from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Choose the architecture matching the application, not merely the architecture of Windows.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if that option appears.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
The Visual C++ package does not install Qt5Script.dll itself. It only supplies a compiler runtime that the Qt library or application may need. Older software may require a different supported runtime identified by its developer.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 5: Update related drivers only when the application needs them
A graphics or device driver is not a normal source of a missing QtScript file. Consider this step only when the application also crashes during graphics initialization, reports a platform plugin problem, or the vendor specifically identifies a driver issue.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the device category named by the application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a vendor driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page and select the package for the exact Windows version and device model. Do not use Device Manager to replace the application’s Qt files.

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They do not normally restore a third-party application’s Qt5Script.dll.
Use them when multiple Windows features are failing, system files are damaged, or other unrelated applications show corruption.
- Open Start and type Terminal.
- Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If either command reports errors it could not repair, run the same command again after Windows Update has completed. If the application alone still reports Qt5Script.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall procedure.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed rarely fixes a vendor DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing system problems that may need attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and the affected application’s official reinstall remains the definitive fix when its private Qt runtime is missing.
Windows Features and regsvr32
Turning on a Windows feature will not normally install Qt5Script.dll.
You can still check Windows optional components if the application documentation explicitly requires one:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the listed features.
- Enable only the feature named by the application vendor.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Do not enable random features as a DLL repair method.
regsvr32 is also normally irrelevant. It registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM components. Qt runtime libraries are normally loaded as application dependencies and are not repaired by registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 Qt5Script.dll
unless the application developer specifically tells you to do so. An error from regsvr32 does not make the missing Qt runtime usable.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Third-party DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files.
- The wrong Qt release.
- The wrong architecture.
- A different compiler build.
- A file missing its required dependencies.
- A DLL that fixes one message but breaks the application later.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create version conflicts and exposes other programs to an untrusted library. Use the affected application’s official installer, launcher repair function, or developer support channel instead.
If reinstalling still does not work
- Confirm the error is generated by the expected executable.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Open file location.
- Check whether
Qt5Script.dllis present beside the executable or in the vendor’s deployment folder. - Check whether antivirus removed it again.
- Review Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for the application name, faulting module, and any dependency named in the event.
- Remove unofficial plugins, extensions, or manually copied DLLs.
- Test a clean installation in the vendor’s recommended folder.
- Send the application name, Windows edition, exact error text, installation path, and Event Viewer details to the developer.
For a developer’s own Qt program, deploy the matching Qt files with windeployqt, using the same Qt version, architecture, compiler, and build configuration as the application. The deployment must include the required Qt modules, plugins, and compiler runtimes in the application tree.
FAQ
Is Qt5Script.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Qt 5 application runtime library supplied by a program that uses the QtScript module.
Where should Qt5Script.dll be located?
Usually in the affected application’s installation directory or its deployment tree, normally near the program executable. It should not normally be copied to System32 or SysWOW64.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is the filename case-sensitive?
No. Normal Windows file loading is not case-sensitive. Qt5Script.dll is the conventional spelling.
Do I need both 32-bit and 64-bit versions?
No. Install the architecture required by the affected application. Installing both versions indiscriminately does not repair a mismatched application package.
Should I download Qt to fix the error?
Usually no. Consumer applications often ship a specific Qt build. Repair or reinstall the application that produced the error.
Can SFC repair Qt5Script.dll?
Normally no. SFC focuses on protected Windows system files, not third-party application libraries.
What if the error appears after an update?
Use the application’s repair or file verification function. If that fails, reinstall the current official version and check antivirus quarantine for a removed file.
