In the U.S. Navy, a Quartermaster is a shipboard navigation specialist, usually found on the bridge or in the pilot house. The answer depends on which service you mean.
What does “Quartermaster” mean?
It is not one universal job title. The U.S. Army uses Quartermaster for a logistics branch and its personnel; the U.S. Navy uses Quartermaster for an enlisted rating focused on navigation and ship control. These are distinct modern U.S. military uses, not a definition that applies to every service or historical period.
| Service | Main focus | Typical setting | Training or organization |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. Army | Logistics and support functions | Army units and support operations across the branch’s functional areas | U.S. Army Quartermaster School and the 23rd Quartermaster Brigade |
| U.S. Navy | Navigation, ship control, and bridge watches | A ship’s bridge or pilot house | Navy recruit and specialized technical training, with assignments aboard ships |
Where to find Army Quartermasters
Army Quartermasters serve across several logistics functions; they are not all located at one school or facility. The Army lists these functional areas:
- Supply management
- Culinary services
- Petroleum
- Potable water
- Aerial delivery
- Field services
- Mortuary affairs
The U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps & School provides training and professional development. Its organization includes training departments and the 23rd Quartermaster Brigade. The school is a training organization, not the sole workplace for serving Quartermasters: the Army says the Quartermaster Commandant does not have command authority over Quartermaster units.

How the Army role developed
The Army Quartermaster Department traces its origins to June 16, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized a Quartermaster General and deputy for the Continental Army. During the Revolutionary War, Quartermaster work included camp equipment, tents, transportation, winter shelter materials, and forage. Those historical duties are not a complete description of the modern branch.
In 1912, the earlier Quartermaster Department was consolidated with the Subsistence and Pay departments to form the Quartermaster Corps. At the height of World War II, the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps says it provided over 70,000 different supply items and more than 24 million meals each day. The history page does not specify a calendar year for that “height” period.
