1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf qwbmp.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Qt-based application that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL. qwbmp.dll is an application plugin, not a Windows system component, so the correct fix depends on the executable and folder named in the error.
What this file actually does
qwbmp.dll is a Qt image-format plugin. It adds support for WBMP, meaning Wireless Bitmap, an image format associated with older mobile and wireless devices. Qt applications can use the plugin to read and write WBMP images.

The file normally belongs in the application’s Qt plugin tree:
<Application folder>imageformatsqwbmp.dll
A typical installation may look like this:
MyApp
MyApp.exe
Qt5Core.dll or Qt6Core.dll
imageformats
qwbmp.dll
Some applications use a separate Qt directory. Python applications built with PyQt, PySide, or PyInstaller may store the plugin under a Qtpluginsimageformats folder or unpack it temporarily into a _MEI... directory.
#1 Best Overall
qwbmp.dll does not ship with Windows and should not normally be copied to C:WindowsSystem32. The filename alone cannot identify the application that installed it. The full path in the error message, the executable being launched, and the folder containing the DLL are more useful than the filename.
The Qt version and architecture also matter. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit plugin, while a 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit plugin. Qt 5 and Qt 6 plugins are not interchangeable, and debug and release builds should not be mixed.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| “qwbmp.dll was not found” immediately after an update | Incomplete application update | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| The file disappeared after an antivirus alert | Quarantine or removal | Check Protection history and restore only a trusted file |
| “The specified module could not be found” while qwbmp.dll is visible | A dependency of the plugin is missing | Repair the application and its required runtime |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | Wrong architecture, corrupted file, or incompatible Qt build | Restore the complete matching application package |
| The error began after copying program files to another PC | Missing Qt libraries or runtime dependencies | Install the application using its official installer |
| A Steam game shows the error | Damaged or incomplete game files | Verify the game files through Steam |
The error appears from a temporary _MEI... path |
PyInstaller bundle or extraction problem | Reinstall or rebuild the application |
| Several unrelated programs fail | Possible Windows component or storage problem | Check system integrity after repairing the affected apps |
Fix qwbmp.dll errors safely
1. Identify the application first
Do not begin by searching for qwbmp.dll online. First establish which program is requesting it.
Read the complete error dialog and note:
- The executable name
- The full path shown, if present
- Whether the program is a game, utility, developer tool, or Python application
- Whether the path contains
imageformats,plugins,Qt,_MEI,Temp, orSystem32
If the dialog does not show a path, reproduce the error and check which shortcut or launcher you used. You can also right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field.
Then open File Explorer and inspect the application folder. A normal Qt deployment commonly contains an imageformats directory beside the executable or within the application’s Qt directory.
The path determines the repair:
- A normal installed application should be repaired through its installer or Windows Apps settings.
- A game should be repaired through its launcher.
- A Python or PyInstaller application should be reinstalled or rebuilt.
- A file in a temporary or unusual startup directory deserves additional scrutiny before it is restored.
2. Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely solution because qwbmp.dll is part of an application’s Qt deployment.
Use Windows repair options
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the application in Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is not available or does not help, return to the application’s entry and choose Uninstall. Restart Windows, then reinstall the program using the developer’s official installer.
Do not delete only qwbmp.dll and replace it with a different copy. Reinstalling the complete application restores the matching Qt core libraries, plugin metadata, image-format plugins, compiler runtime files, and configuration.
A successful repair usually means the program opens normally and the error does not return. If the same message appears, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install it into a new folder rather than reusing a damaged directory.
Repair a launcher-installed game
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the verification to complete.
- Launch the game again.
Other launchers may call this Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Validate files. Use the launcher’s built-in option before manually copying files.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file during an update or after a later scan.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection associated with the affected application.
- Check the file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the application’s official installation.
- The path belongs to the expected program folder.
- The application was obtained from its legitimate publisher or launcher.
- You have confirmed that the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. If the file appeared in a temporary folder, an unknown startup directory, or an unexpected download location, do not restore it. Remove the application, scan the computer, and reinstall from the publisher’s official source.
After restoring a trusted quarantined file, launch the application. If the file is quarantined again, update the security definitions and contact the application publisher rather than repeatedly disabling protection.
4. Check the plugin path, Qt version, and architecture
A present file can still fail if Qt cannot discover it or if it does not match the application.

The plugin should normally be under an imageformats directory, not beside the executable in an arbitrary folder:
Application
Application.exe
imageformats
qwbmp.dll
Do not mix files from different installations. In particular, avoid combining:
- Qt 5 files with Qt 6 files
- 32-bit files with a 64-bit application
- 64-bit files with a 32-bit application
- Debug plugins with a release application
- Files from unrelated games or utilities
To check an executable’s architecture, use the application publisher’s documentation or a trusted deployment or development tool. The safest practical approach for ordinary users is to reinstall the application using the installer that matches the operating system and application edition.
Rank #3
For developers deploying their own Qt application, the official Qt deployment utility is windeployqt. Run it from the appropriate Qt command prompt, for example:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
windeployqt.exe MyApp.exe
It collects the required Qt libraries, plugins, QML modules, and runtime dependencies. This is appropriate for the application owner or administrator maintaining the exact build, not for selecting an isolated qwbmp.dll from another program.
5. Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean qwbmp.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by qwbmp.dll.
Repair the parent application first. If the publisher documents a Microsoft Visual C++ requirement, install or repair the required Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official download page. Microsoft’s current v14 package supports Visual Studio 2017 and later, but older applications may require an older package specified by their publisher.
To repair an installed runtime:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Select the package associated with the application’s architecture.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not install multiple unrelated runtime packages simply because a DLL error appeared. The application vendor’s requirements are the deciding evidence.

If you administer the application or need evidence for its publisher, Qt can print plugin-loading details.
Open Command Prompt and change to the application directory:
cd /d "C:PathToApplication"
Set the diagnostic variable and start the executable:
set QT_DEBUG_PLUGINS=1
MyApp.exe
Replace MyApp.exe with the actual executable name.
The output can show where Qt searches for plugins, whether it finds qwbmp.dll, and whether loading fails because of an incompatible version or missing dependency. Save the output along with:

- The full application path
- The Windows edition
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The complete error text
Clear the variable when finished by closing that Command Prompt window. If the diagnostic output identifies a version or architecture mismatch, reinstall the application rather than replacing one plugin.
7. Repair Windows components only when other applications also fail
Because qwbmp.dll normally belongs to a third-party application, Windows repair commands are not the first fix. Use them when several unrelated applications show loading errors or when Windows itself behaves abnormally.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the original application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If only the Qt application fails while Windows and other programs work, return to repairing that application instead of repeating system commands.
Recommended Free Tools
The manual process of checking component health and interpreting repeated SFC or DISM results can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while repairs are completed by its full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected Qt application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned qwbmp.dll.
8. Consider drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or chipset driver is not a normal cause of a missing qwbmp.dll. Consider driver maintenance only if the application began failing after a graphics update, Device Manager reports a device error, or several graphics-dependent programs fail.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and relevant device categories.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, open the device’s Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, when available. Restart Windows and test again.
Finding the correct driver manually can involve identifying the hardware, architecture, laptop model, and vendor package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers, while driver installation is completed by its full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the Qt application that owns qwbmp.dll.
9. Use System Restore for a clearly timed system change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a driver, update, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can revert system settings, drivers, and installed programs. After it completes, test the application. If the error remains, use the application’s official repair or reinstall process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download qwbmp.dll separately
Random DLL download sites are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different Qt release, use the wrong architecture, or require dependencies that are still missing. Old version listings and file hashes do not establish what your application needs.
Best Value
Do not copy qwbmp.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or a Windows folder. Do not use registry cleaners to solve this error.

Manual copying is appropriate only for an administrator restoring an exact application package from the same official installer or build, with the same Qt version, architecture, configuration, and directory structure.
Frequently asked questions
Is qwbmp.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Qt application plugin that provides Wireless Bitmap image support. The application that bundled it owns the practical repair.
Which program installed qwbmp.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the program. Check the executable and full path shown in the error. It may belong to a Qt utility, game, Wireshark installation, Python bundle, or another unrelated application.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does qwbmp.dll need to be present for every Qt program?
No. Qt applications use optional image-format plugins. A particular application may include qwbmp.dll even if you never knowingly open a WBMP image because Qt may scan or load image plugins during startup.
Can I download qwbmp.dll from another computer?
Only as part of restoring the exact same official application package and build. Copying the file alone is unsafe and commonly creates another missing-dependency or compatibility error.
What if qwbmp.dll is present but still will not load?
Repair the application, verify that the file is under imageformats, confirm the Qt major version and architecture, and run QT_DEBUG_PLUGINS=1. The diagnostic output may reveal a missing dependency or incompatible plugin.
When should I contact the publisher?
Contact the publisher after an official reinstall fails. Include the application name, executable path, Windows version, full error text, architecture, and any QT_DEBUG_PLUGINS output.
