The cnhl8308.dll error may read “This application failed to start because CNHL8308.DLL was not found,” “The file CNHL8308.DLL is missing or corrupted,” or “Error loading CNHL8308.DLL.”
When cnhl8308.dll cannot be loaded, the affected software is usually an older Canon printer or scanner component rather than Windows itself.

The 60-second answer
cnhl8308.dll is associated with Canon MP software and is identified in public file metadata as CanonAPI MP LowLevelDriver. It is not a normal Windows runtime, DirectX component, or Visual C++ Redistributable file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest repair is:
- Identify the Canon printer or multifunction device connected to the PC.
- Open the Canon regional support site.
- Select the exact model and your Windows version.
- Download the official MP Drivers, printer driver, scanner driver, or complete software package.
- Uninstall the old Canon software if the Canon installer or model instructions require it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the downloaded package as administrator.
Do not download the DLL separately and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. A standalone file may be malicious, built for the wrong architecture, or unrelated to the driver package that originally required it.

Why cnhl8308.dll errors appear
The most likely causes are:
- A damaged or incomplete Canon driver installation
- Canon software removed by a failed uninstall, disk cleanup, or Windows update
- A printer or scanner driver update that left older components behind
- An incompatible legacy Canon package
- Antivirus quarantine
- A missing dependency required by the Canon application
- A leftover Canon startup entry after the device was removed
- Broader Windows component corruption
The filename alone cannot identify the exact Canon model. Several Canon MP devices may use similarly named files, so installing a driver for a different printer may not resolve the error.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon MP package
This is the primary fix for a missing or damaged cnhl8308.dll.
Identify the Canon model
Check the label on the printer or scanner. You can also check Windows:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon device.
- Record its complete model name.
If the device is not listed, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Canon entry or an item with a warning icon.
Remove the old Canon software when appropriate
Do not remove the device first if you still need to print and have no replacement installer. Download the correct package from Canon’s regional support site before uninstalling.
Then:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Uninstall Canon MP Drivers, Canon scanning software, or other Canon software related to the affected device.
- Restart Windows.
- Temporarily disconnect the USB printer if the installer instructions call for it.
- Run the Canon installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Reconnect or rediscover the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows again.
Canon MP Drivers can include both printer and scanner-driver functionality. A basic driver supplied through Windows Update may allow printing but omit Canon scanning utilities or older control panels.
The repair worked if the affected Canon program opens, printing or scanning completes, and the same error does not return after restarting Windows.

Manually locating the right legacy driver can involve checking model names, Windows versions, architecture, and several old packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan to show driver problems; repairing or installing drivers through the full version is optional, and the model-specific Canon package remains the definitive source for this device.

Fix 2: Reinstall the driver through Device Manager
Use this step when the Canon device appears in Device Manager or the error began immediately after a driver change.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- If the issue started after an update, select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Otherwise, select Uninstall Device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you already have the correct Canon installer ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the downloaded Canon driver package as administrator.
Do not choose a random driver because it has a similar model name. Match the exact Canon model and Windows edition.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public metadata reports this file primarily as a 32-bit Canon component, although third-party records are inconsistent and do not establish a genuine 64-bit build.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Canon application. Therefore, do not install an x64 DLL merely because Windows is 64-bit. Install the architecture supplied by the correct Canon package. If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” the cause may be an architecture mismatch, corruption, or a missing dependency.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed the file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Open a detection related to Canon software and inspect its path, publisher, and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:

- It is inside a known Canon installation directory.
- The Canon device and software are still being used.
- The file was installed by the official Canon package.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as malicious.
If the file is in a temporary folder, a user-writable folder, or an unrelated program directory, do not restore it. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan. For persistent or suspicious behavior, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Reinstalling the official Canon package is safer than restoring an isolated quarantined DLL.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when other Windows files fail
cnhl8308.dll is associated with Canon software, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated Windows features are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or SFC reports system integrity problems.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again.
Repeating these commands will not usually replace a missing Canon driver. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan to show repair issues, while repairs through the full version are optional; use it as a convenience, not as a substitute for reinstalling the Canon package.
Do not run regsvr32 for this file
Do not use:
regsvr32 cnhl8308.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries that export a DllRegisterServer function. There is no reliable evidence that this Canon low-level driver DLL is self-registering. Running the command will usually produce an error and will not repair a damaged driver installation.
Likewise, do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not general repair locations for third-party driver files.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or a Windows feature by default
Installing the Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal solution for cnhl8308.dll. The file is identified as part of Canon MP driver software, not as a Microsoft runtime.
Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only if the complete error separately names a dependency such as VCRUNTIME*.dll or MSVCP*.dll. Match the application architecture and use Microsoft’s official package.
Windows Features also will not normally restore this Canon component. Do not enable optional Windows features at random to resolve the message.

This wording does not always mean that cnhl8308.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Check the following:
- Record the full path shown in the error or application log.
- Confirm that the Canon software is still installed.
- Reinstall the complete Canon package rather than copying only the named file.
- Check whether another dependency is named in the full error.
- If the problem began after an update, roll back the Canon driver or use System Restore.
If the path points to a temporary directory, an unrelated application folder, or another unexpected user-writable location, investigate for malware before restoring anything.

- Disable an orphaned Canon entry only if the printer or scanner has been removed and the entry is clearly associated with it.
Do not restore the DLL simply to silence software that is no longer needed.
When System Restore or Windows Update rollback helps
Use System Restore when the error started immediately after a driver or software change and a restore point exists:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore.
If the issue began after a Windows or driver update, check Settings > Windows Update > Update history and review available recovery options. Do not roll back unrelated updates without a clear connection to the error.
Frequently asked questions
Is cnhl8308.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. Public metadata associates it with Canon MP software and Canon Inc., although no public Canon file catalogue directly documents this filename.
Which Canon printer installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the model. Check the printer or scanner label and install the package for that exact device.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is cnhl8308.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Available records report it primarily as 32-bit, but third-party records are inconsistent. Use the architecture included with the correct Canon package rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Should I download cnhl8308.dll separately?
No. Standalone DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency. Reinstall the official Canon software package instead.
Will SFC fix the error?
Usually not by itself. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while cnhl8308.dll is associated with Canon driver software. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption.
What information is needed for further diagnosis?
Record the exact error text, Canon model, Windows version, full path of cnhl8308.dll, and the program named in the message. Also note whether the file was quarantined and whether the error began after an update, cleanup, or driver installation.
