Fix 1: Reinstall the Lenovo package that owns rainbow.dll
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely and safest repair.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Lenovo programs containing one of these names:
- Lenovo Utility
- On Screen Display
- Hotkey Features Integration
- Lenovo Settings
- ThinkPad hotkey or system-interface software
- If the failing program is clearly damaged, select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open a browser and go to Lenovo Support.
- Use Lenovo’s Detect Product option, or enter the exact model or serial number.
- Open Drivers & Software.
- Check categories such as Software and Utilities for On Screen Display, Lenovo Utility, or Hotkey Features Integration.
- Download the package listed for the exact model and installed Windows version.
- Run the installer. If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
- Restart again.
On some older ThinkPad models, On Screen Display is bundled inside Hotkey Features Integration with a System Interface Driver and other utilities. Do not assume that a package with a similar name from another Lenovo model is interchangeable.

How to tell whether it worked
Sign in and repeat the action that produced the error. For example, press a function key, open the Lenovo control panel, or restart if the message appeared during startup. The error should disappear, and Lenovo’s on-screen indicators or hotkey controls should respond normally.
If the installer refuses to run, uninstall the existing Lenovo utility, restart, download the package again from the model-specific Lenovo Support page, and run the installer as administrator.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows is calling an obsolete Lenovo entry
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A Lenovo program can be removed while its startup entry, scheduled task, shortcut, or service remains. In that situation, rainbow.dll may be requested at every sign-in even though no current Lenovo feature needs it.
First check installed programs:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Lenovo.
- Remove an obsolete or duplicate On Screen Display, hotkey, or utility package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the supported package from the exact Lenovo model page if you still need the hotkey features.
Then check startup items:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old Lenovo entry associated with the error.
- If Lenovo controls still work and the entry points to removed software, right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart and test again.
You can also inspect scheduled tasks:
- Press the Windows key and type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for clearly obsolete Lenovo tasks.
- Check the Actions pane before disabling anything.
- Disable a task only when it points to an uninstalled Lenovo program and you have confirmed it is not needed.
Do not delete random startup entries merely because they contain the word rainbow. If you cannot identify the calling program, leave the entry in place and continue with signature and event checks.
Fix 3: Confirm rainbow.dll versus rainbow32.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A separate file named rainbow32.dll is associated with the 32-bit Lenovo On Screen Display component. It is not automatically a replacement for rainbow.dll.
Check the architecture of the program reporting the error:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open the Details tab.
- Find the process that appears when the error occurs.
- Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, where available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also right-click the program’s executable, choose Properties, and inspect its details. The exact process may instead be visible in Event Viewer:

- Open it.
- Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Record the application name and faulting module.
Use the Lenovo package intended for that model and architecture. Do not rename rainbow32.dll, place it beside an unrelated executable, or replace one file with the other based only on the filename.

Fix 4: Check antivirus Protection History
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy of the file. A missing-file message after an antivirus event is a useful clue.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand a detection related to
rainbow.dll. - Check the reported file path and threat details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from an official Lenovo installer.
- Its location is consistent with the Lenovo application that uses it.
- The file has a valid Lenovo digital signature.
- You have no other reason to suspect tampering.
If those conditions are not met, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the Lenovo package from Lenovo Support. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored quarantined file again.
To check a file’s signature, right-click it, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer. A signature check does not by itself prove that every copy is safe, but an unsigned file from an unknown location should not be installed.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
rainbow.dll is associated with Lenovo software, so Windows repair commands are secondary. They are useful when the error began after broader system corruption or when several Windows programs also fail.
- Install pending updates through Settings > Windows Update.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart when both commands have completed.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the Lenovo package that supplies this application DLL.
When repeating SFC and DISM manually, it can be difficult to know which component changed or whether the Lenovo package itself remains damaged. What success looks like
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, or that no integrity violations were found. Restart and test the Lenovo feature again. If the same rainbow.dll message remains, return to the Lenovo package repair rather than repeatedly running Windows component checks.
Fix 6: Update Lenovo drivers and hotkey components
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A Lenovo update may have left the hotkey software mismatched with the system-interface or chipset components it depends on.

Use Lenovo Support first, based on the exact model. In addition, check Windows driver status:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand System devices, Human Interface Devices, Keyboards, and Display adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click a relevant device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if a driver is installed.
Do not remove a device driver simply because it has an older date. Lenovo-specific hotkey packages often depend on particular system-interface components, and the model-specific Lenovo installer is the better source than a generic driver package.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a known recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a Windows update, Lenovo update, driver installation, or software removal and a restore point is available.
- Press the Windows key and type Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and start the process.
- Sign in and test the Lenovo feature.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, installed programs, and settings without removing personal documents. It does not replace a clean reinstall of the correct Lenovo utility, so reinstall that package afterward if the error returns.

Do not download rainbow.dll from a random DLL repository or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. That can provide the wrong Lenovo release, wrong architecture, or a tampered file, and Windows may then load it from an unsafe location. It also leaves the owning Lenovo application, dependencies, startup entries, and version matching unresolved.

Use Lenovo Support and its exact-model installer instead. Manual copying is appropriate only when Lenovo supplies the file within an official package and documents its destination.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. Microsoft documents it for DLLs that expose the registration entry points it expects. There is no verified evidence that this Lenovo helper DLL requires registration, so running commands such as these is not a routine repair:
regsvr32 rainbow.dll
regsvr32 /i rainbow.dll
If the message says “The specified module could not be found” while rainbow.dll is visibly present, a dependency may be missing. Windows resolves DLLs using a defined search order, including the application directory and system directories. Replacing the visible DLL may therefore fail to repair the actual dependency problem.

Common causes of rainbow.dll errors
