Rare Dinos Not Spawning on Your ARK Server: How to Fix It

Remove hidden NoDinos restrictions, verify the map and spawn entry, then use a backed-up global or targeted wild-dino cleanup and allow time for repopulation.

If rare creatures are missing from your ARK server, check configuration before changing spawn multipliers. Remove any -NoDinos or -NoDinosExcept* restriction, verify that the species is supported by the selected map and has a valid spawn entry, then clear existing wild creatures so the map can repopulate. A wipe removes the current untamed population; it does not promise that a rare species will appear immediately.

Back up the save before administrative cleanup. The safest fix depends on whether the cause is a launch restriction, a map or spawn-entry mismatch, an overcrowded wild population, or hibernation behavior in a single-player or non-dedicated session.

Start with configuration, not a dino wipe

A wild-dino wipe is useful only after the server is allowed to create the creatures you want. If a launch argument suppresses normal spawning, destroying the existing population simply leaves the server empty again. Work through the checks below in order so you do not disrupt a healthy save unnecessarily.

Identify the session type

  • Dedicated server: Treat launch arguments, server configuration, and recurring respawn controls as the primary suspects.
  • Single-player or non-dedicated session: Include hibernation behavior in your diagnosis. Community reports describe populations appearing stalled while areas or sessions are not actively simulating; those reports are anecdotal and can vary by game version, so they are not a universal rule.

Check whether all wild creatures are affected

If no untamed creatures are appearing anywhere, inspect the global restrictions first. If common creatures are present but one rare species is absent, move quickly to the map, spawn-entry, and creature-ID checks rather than repeatedly wiping the whole map.

Remove launch and configuration restrictions

Inspect the server’s startup command and the relevant settings, including GameUserSettings.ini, for these options:

Option What it restricts What to do if you want normal wild spawns
-NoDinos Prevents the normal wild population from spawning. Remove it from the launch configuration before the next server start.
-NoDinosExceptForcedSpawn Allows only forced spawns; ordinary wild spawn entries remain suppressed. Remove it unless the server is intentionally limited to forced creatures.
-NoDinosExceptManualSpawn Allows only manually created creatures rather than ordinary wild spawns. Remove it for a normal ecosystem.
-NoDinosExceptWaterSpawn Restricts spawning to water creatures. Remove it if land and other normal spawn entries are required.
-NoDinosExceptStreamingSpawn Restricts normal population behavior to streaming-related spawns. Remove it unless that limited behavior is deliberate.

These flags are easy to miss because the server can still appear to run normally while its wild population is being suppressed. Check the actual command line used by the service, panel, or startup script rather than relying only on a saved text file. After removing an unwanted restriction, apply the configuration on the next server start and then allow the map to begin repopulating.

Verify the map and spawn entry for the missing species

Rare does not mean universal. A creature can be absent because the selected map does not include it, because its spawn entry is not present, or because the server is using a different creature definition than the one you expect.

Confirm map availability

Check the map currently loaded by the server, not the map you intended to load. Then verify that the missing species is supported on that map. A creature that is available on one map may have no natural entry on another.

Confirm the spawn entry and creature ID

Spawn entries determine where a species can appear. Confirm that the entry includes the correct creature ID and that the entry is active for the relevant habitat. This is a more direct test than changing a global multiplier: a multiplier can alter the number or level distribution of creatures that already have an entry, but it cannot create a missing species entry.

Check the habitat before changing settings

After configuration and map checks, revisit the places where that species’ spawn entry is supposed to operate. A creature may be rare because its valid habitat is narrow, not because the server is broken. Search the correct biome or water region after repopulation rather than judging the entire map from one location.

Back up the save before clearing wild creatures

Administrative cleanup changes the live wild population. Make a separate copy of the world save before issuing either wipe command. The backup gives you a recovery point if you clear the wrong server, discover that a restriction was still active, or decide that the existing population should be restored.

  • Stop or pause normal administration long enough to identify the correct server and save.
  • Copy the current save using the hosting panel or your normal server backup procedure.
  • Record the map and configuration state so you can tell which launch restrictions were removed.
  • Only then run a global or class-specific cleanup.

Choose between a global wipe and a targeted cleanup

Method Command Scope Best use Main trade-off
Global wild wipe cheat destroywilddinos or the documented capitalization cheat DestroyWildDinos All untamed wild creatures on the server A broad population reset after removing a global restriction or when many species appear stalled Disrupts the entire existing wild population and requires a full repopulation cycle
Class-specific cleanup cheat DestroyWildDinoClasses "CreatureClassName" 1 One specified wild creature class Testing or correcting one species while preserving other wild creatures Requires the exact class name; it will not fix a map with no valid spawn entry

The official command reference states that the class-specific command does not prevent new creatures of that class from spawning as usual. Both commands affect untamed wild creatures, not creatures that players have already tamed.

When to use the global command

Use the global wipe only after the launch restrictions are gone and the map and spawn entry have been checked. It is appropriate when old wild creatures are occupying the available population or when a configuration change needs a clean population rebuild. Enter the command through the server’s administrator console with the required permissions, then leave the server running so normal entries can refill.

When to use the class-specific command

Use a targeted cleanup when one species is the problem and you want to limit disruption. Replace CreatureClassName with the exact class name used by the server’s creature definition. A typo, an incorrect class, or a species that is not enabled on the map will produce no useful correction, so verify the identifier before executing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to expect after a wipe

A wipe removes the current wild population; it does not select a rare creature for immediate replacement. The map must repopulate through its normal spawn entries, and some rare creatures may have long or special timers according to community reports. Those reports are version-dependent and do not establish a universal recovery time.

  1. Confirm that the server is running with the unwanted -NoDinos* option removed.
  2. Issue the selected cleanup command once, after confirming the target server.
  3. Leave the server active long enough for ordinary population processes to run.
  4. Travel back to the species’ correct habitat instead of checking only the location where you performed the wipe.
  5. If the species remains absent, return to the map and spawn-entry check before issuing another global wipe.

Repeated wipes performed before the map has had time to repopulate can make diagnosis harder and continually erase creatures that have just appeared.

Why only common dinos may be spawning

A restriction is filtering the normal population

The five -NoDinos variants above can suppress all ordinary wild creatures or narrow spawning to a special category. This is the first check when the server is empty or when only manually, forcibly, or water-created creatures appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rare species has no active entry on this map

Common creatures can continue to appear even when the missing species is not part of the selected map’s natural entries. Seeing a healthy population of common dinos is therefore not proof that every creature is enabled.

Existing creatures are occupying available population

Population saturation can delay replacement. A server with many existing wild creatures may have fewer opportunities for a rare entry to be selected. A cleanup can address that condition, but only after you have established that the species is valid for the map.

Level settings are being mistaken for species settings

Level weighting changes the distribution of levels among creatures that already spawn. It does not add a missing species and does not repair a disabled spawn entry. Do not raise level multipliers as a substitute for verifying the creature ID and entry.

The session is not actively simulating the relevant area

Single-player and non-dedicated players report that hibernation can make a population look frozen. Treat this as anecdotal, version-dependent guidance rather than an official guarantee. Test the behavior in an active session and compare it with a dedicated server if you need to determine whether the issue follows the world configuration or the session type.

Use an automatic respawn interval on long-running dedicated servers

For a dedicated server that repeatedly loses particular wild species over time, evaluate ServerAutoForceRespawnWildDinosInterval. The official configuration reference describes this control as forcing wild-creature respawns after a configured interval and identifies it as useful for preventing species such as Basilosaurus and Spinosaurus from becoming depopulated on long-running servers.

This setting addresses persistence, not an initial configuration error. It cannot make an unsupported creature appear on a map, and it does not replace checking for -NoDinos* restrictions. Treat it as a recurring prevention control after the species and spawn entry are known to be valid.

  • Use it when: a dedicated server’s population gradually loses certain species during extended uptime.
  • Do not use it as the first step when: no wild creatures spawn, the map is wrong, or a launch restriction is active.
  • Plan for: the interval to be applied as a server configuration change and tested against the desired population behavior.

The available reference does not establish one universal interval value for every map, version, or server population. Choose and validate a value appropriate to your server rather than copying an unqualified number.

Dedicated server versus single-player troubleshooting

Situation Most useful first checks How to interpret the result
Dedicated server, no wild creatures anywhere Launch arguments and GameUserSettings.ini; then verify the map A global restriction is more likely than a rare-species timer.
Dedicated server, common creatures present but one rare species absent Map availability, spawn entry, creature ID, and habitat Do not assume a global wipe or level multiplier can create the species.
Dedicated server, species disappears after long uptime Population cleanup strategy and ServerAutoForceRespawnWildDinosInterval Consider recurring respawn prevention after confirming valid entries.
Single-player or non-dedicated session Configuration, active-area testing, and hibernation-related reports Keep conclusions qualified because community observations vary by version.

A decision path that minimizes disruption

  1. No wild creatures at all: inspect every -NoDinos* option first. Remove the unintended one, apply the change on the next server start, and observe the population before wiping.
  2. Common creatures spawn, but the rare species never does: verify the selected map, the species’ spawn entry, its creature ID, and the intended habitat.
  3. The species is valid, but the map is crowded: back up the save and use either the global wipe or the class-specific command, choosing the smaller scope that fits the problem.
  4. The species returns briefly and then disappears on a dedicated server: review long-running population behavior and evaluate ServerAutoForceRespawnWildDinosInterval.
  5. The issue appears only in single-player or non-dedicated play: test while the relevant area is actively simulated and treat hibernation explanations as community-level, version-dependent evidence.

Common mistakes and safer corrections

  • Wiping before checking the launch command: remove the restriction first, or the replacement population can be suppressed again.
  • Wiping repeatedly in a short session: allow the map to repopulate and revisit the correct habitat before deciding that the fix failed.
  • Changing level multipliers to summon a species: verify the spawn entry and creature ID; level weighting does not create a missing entry.
  • Using a global wipe for a one-species test: use DestroyWildDinoClasses when the exact class is known and preserving other wild creatures matters.
  • Skipping a save backup: administrative cleanup is reversible only if you kept a usable copy of the pre-cleanup save.
  • Treating a community timer as a guarantee: rare-spawn timing varies by creature, map, session, and version; no authoritative percentage or average recovery timer is established here.

What a successful repair looks like

The server starts without an unintended -NoDinos restriction, the selected map contains the species’ active spawn entry, and the creature ID matches the server definition. After any necessary cleanup, untamed creatures begin repopulating and the target habitat eventually produces the species when its normal spawn conditions are met. On a long-running dedicated server, a configured automatic respawn interval can help prevent recurring depopulation, while single-player and non-dedicated results should be interpreted with the session’s hibernation behavior in mind.
