For a Java server, run /save-all (or /save-all flush when an immediate disk flush is needed), then /stop and copy the server directory after the process exits. Bedrock dedicated servers use /save save-all or /save save-all flush before a normal shutdown. A save command protects pending data; it does not create an independent backup until you copy or archive the files.

First identify the server edition
Java Edition and Bedrock Dedicated Server do not share the same save syntax. Confirm the edition before entering a command, and use the server console or an authorized operator session rather than an untrusted in-game chat window.

Java Edition
The standard Java server setup requires a compatible Java installation. Its save commands are /save-all, /save-all flush, /save-off, and /save-on. The command reference applies to the Java server process and its level files.
Bedrock Dedicated Server
Microsoft documents a separate /save <mode> command for Bedrock Dedicated Server. The documented modes are save-all and save-all flush. The command reference requires owner or cheat-level access. Bedrock Dedicated Server software runs on supported Windows or Linux versions, so its shutdown method and service wrapper may differ from Java.

None of these commands creates a dated archive, a second world directory, or an off-device copy. The backup is the file copy or archive you make after the save has completed.
The safest Java backup procedure
A clean shutdown gives the most consistent copy because no process is changing region, player, or metadata files while the operating system reads them.

- Announce maintenance. Tell players when the server will become unavailable and ask them to stop building, traveling, or logging in. This prevents last-second changes from arriving while you prepare the copy.
- Save the world. In the Java console or an authorized operator session, run
/save-all. If every player and chunk must be written immediately before the copy, run/save-all flushinstead and wait for the command to finish. Expect a short freeze with the flush form. - Stop the process cleanly. Run
/stop. Do not copy while the Java process is still shutting down. Wait until the process exits and the server window, service, or container reports that it has stopped. - Copy the server directory. Copy the complete directory to a different disk or storage location. A full copy includes the world folders plus settings, permissions, bans, logs, scripts, and installed server components. A dated directory name such as
minecraft-backup-2026-10-15-23-30makes restore points sortable. - Record the software state. Store the Minecraft/server version and the exact mod or plugin set beside the backup. Those details make it possible to recreate the environment that wrote the files.
- Restart only after verification. Check that the destination contains the expected world directory and that the copy completed without an error before bringing the server online.
Copying only the world can be valid when configuration is deliberately managed elsewhere, but it leaves out files such as banned-ips.json, banned-players.json, and server.properties. A full-directory copy is easier to recover because it preserves those administrative settings with the world.

Bedrock Dedicated Server backup procedure
- Announce the maintenance window and stop player activity.
- From the Bedrock Dedicated Server console or an authorized session, run
/save save-all. For the documented flush mode, use/save save-all flush. The server freezes while it saves, so wait for completion rather than starting a file copy during the operation. - Stop the Bedrock server through its normal shutdown method, service manager, or hosting wrapper. Wait until the process has exited.
- Copy the world directory, or the complete server directory when you also need configuration and administrative files. Put the copy on separate storage and give it a timestamped name.
- Record the Bedrock server version and any behavior packs, scripts, or other components needed to open the world again.
The Bedrock command is not interchangeable with Java’s /save-all. Entering the Java form on a Bedrock Dedicated Server, or the Bedrock form on Java, is a command-syntax error rather than a backup method.
Keeping Java online: the hot-copy option
Sometimes a Java server cannot take a maintenance outage. An experienced operator can reduce write races by disabling level-file saves for the duration of a live copy:
- Announce a short read-only maintenance period so players do not continue changing the world.
- Run
/save-alland wait for it to finish. - Run
/save-off. This disables server writes to level files while the copy is made. - Copy the required world or server directory to separate storage. Keep the copy operation as short as practical.
- Run
/save-onimmediately after the copy and confirm that normal saving has resumed. - Review the console for errors before allowing normal play.
This method still has more moving parts and more opportunities for operator error than a clean stop. Never leave saves disabled: subsequent gameplay could remain unwritten, and a later crash could discard it. If you cannot verify the save state and the completed copy, schedule a shutdown instead.

Choosing the copy scope and storage
World-only copy
A world-only copy is the smallest useful restore unit when the server configuration, scripts, and mod or plugin installation are maintained separately. Confirm the exact world directory before copying; a server may contain multiple worlds or dimensions.
Full server-directory copy
A full copy is the practical default for a small or self-hosted server. It keeps the world, server.properties, ban lists, operator data, launch files, logs, and the installed server components together. The extra files also help diagnose why a restored world behaves differently from the original.
Where to keep it
Use storage other than the live disk when possible. A second local disk protects against accidental deletion or a damaged live installation; an additional off-device copy protects against loss of the machine or its storage. Keep dated restore points rather than overwriting the only copy, and verify that the destination has enough free space before starting.

How to restore a Java or Bedrock world
Restore with the server stopped. Replacing files while the process is running can mix old and new region data and makes it difficult to determine which copy is authoritative.
- Stop the server and preserve the current state. Make a safety copy of the active server directory before changing anything. Keep this pre-restore directory as a rollback option.
- Inspect the selected backup. Confirm its timestamp, expected world folder, and, for a full backup, configuration files. Do not assume the newest directory is usable if the copy ended with an error.
- Move the active world aside. Rename or move the current world directory instead of deleting it. A name such as
world-before-restoremakes the fallback obvious. - Place the backup under the configured name. Copy or unpack the selected world into the directory name the server expects. On common Java setups this is controlled by
level-nameinserver.properties; verify the local configuration rather than assuming it isworld. Bedrock installations likewise need the folder name and path expected by that server instance. - Correct ownership and permissions. The account that runs the server must be able to read and write the restored files. Fix ownership and permission differences introduced by another computer, archive tool, service account, or operating system.
- Match the software environment. Check the Minecraft/server version and reinstall or enable the same mods, plugins, behavior packs, or scripts recorded with the backup. Opening a world with an incompatible environment can cause missing content or additional errors.
- Start and validate privately. Watch the startup log for warnings and errors. Join as an operator, inspect the spawn area, and check several known builds, inventories, and dimensions before allowing players back.
- Keep the rollback copy. Do not remove the pre-restore directory until the restored server has passed your checks and you no longer need to reverse the change.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
The backup looks current, but recent work is missing
Check whether the save command completed before the copy began. A plain save request persists pending changes, while the flush form is intended for an immediate write and can pause the server. If the process was copied while still running, replace the live copy with a clean-stop backup rather than trusting a partially changing directory.
The server loads a different world
Inspect the configured world name and the folder nesting inside the archive. A frequent mistake is unpacking a backup into an extra parent directory, so the server sees no world at the path named by level-name. Move the old directory aside, place the restored folder at the expected level, and restart.

Players cannot join after restoration
Read the startup log first. Permission or ownership errors can prevent files from being written; a version, mod, plugin, behavior-pack, or script mismatch can also stop startup or remove content. Restore the recorded environment before changing world files again.
The world opens but appears damaged
Stop the server, preserve the damaged state as another dated directory, and try an earlier restore point. Compare the known-good backup with the current one rather than repeatedly restarting the same damaged copy. Keep the original pre-restore directory until you establish which point is reliable.
Saves were accidentally left disabled
On Java, run /save-on immediately, confirm that normal saving resumes, and make a fresh clean-stop backup. Treat the period with saves disabled as potentially incomplete; anything not flushed before a crash may not exist in the files.
