Rare Guns in Fortnite: What “Rare” Means and How to Find Coveted Weapons

Mythic is Fortnite’s top formal rarity tier, but a gun’s real scarcity depends on mode, season, event, and acquisition route. Here’s how to distinguish the two—and avoid outdated location guides.

Fortnite’s rarest formal weapon tier is Mythic, but a coveted gun can also be hard to get because it is limited to a particular mode, season, event, vault, or boss. Those are different kinds of rarity. As of October 8, 2026, the sources available here do not establish a complete current Battle Royale Mythic and Exotic roster or where to find each weapon, so treat old map routes as historical—not current directions.

What “rare” means in Fortnite

Epic’s Fortnite Weapons Primer uses rarity as a formal tier and describes six levels, from Common to Mythic. It says rarity can affect damage, magazine capacity, spread, and recoil. In that system, Rare is a middle tier—not a synonym for unusually scarce—and Mythic sits at the top.

Formal tier Stars in Epic’s primer Position in the documented scale
Common 1 Lowest
Uncommon 2 Above Common
Rare 3 Middle
Epic 4 Above Rare
Legendary 5 Immediately below Mythic
Mythic 6 Top; described as the rarest and most damaging tier

Epic also uses the category name Exotic in announcements, but the Weapons Primer does not place Exotic on this six-step ladder. The available official material therefore does not support treating Exotic as a universal tier above or below Mythic.

Why coveted weapons are hard to get

Scarcity often comes from a weapon’s route into the match rather than its color. A gun might require defeating a boss, opening a keycard vault, finding special event loot, or playing a specific mode. A route can disappear when an event ends or a season changes, and separate modes can have separate loot pools.

  • GILDED TROOPER: Board the Battle Bus and drop in with Fortnite Legendary Skull Trooper (Gilded)!
  • FORTNITE: 6-inch action figure is inspired by the video game Fortnite
  • ARTICULATED: Feature 28 points of articulation to win any Battle Royale
  • ACCESSORIES: Comes equipped with Back Bling and Harvesting Tools
  • BONUS CODE: Code for virtual item included: Mecha-jolly
  • Formal rarity: the weapon’s labeled tier, such as Rare or Mythic.
  • Availability: whether the weapon is in the active loot pool for your mode and update.
  • Acquisition difficulty: what you must do to obtain it, such as finding a vault keycard or reaching a special location.
  • Practical value: how its class, range, damage, firing rate, magazine, reload, and special effects fit your loadout.

Rarity alone is not a universal performance ranking. A high-tier weapon may not suit every range or play style; compare its mechanics and utility as well as its label.

What the latest documented examples show

Fortnite Override, v42.20

Epic’s v42.20 Fortnite Override update notes introduce the Kingdom Key and Rebecca’s Guns in Override. Epic describes Rebecca’s Guns as a dual-wielded Assault Rifle/SMG combination and says an Exotic version has ricocheting bullets. The notes also list Hyperburst Pistol, Mammoth Pistol, Reaper Sniper Rifle, Deadeye DMR, Flowberry Fizz, and Rocket Ram in the refreshed hackable loot lineup. These are Override details, not a complete Battle Royale weapon list, and the notes do not establish that the items remain available after later updates.

Battle Royale pools change

Epic’s Chapter 7 Season 2 loot-pool update named four active shotguns for that season: Chaos Reloader, Iron Pump, Super Shredder, and Dual Hammers. Epic described different roles for them and said the season’s pool was updated more often than in previous seasons. That is evidence of changing balance and composition during that season, not confirmation of the live pool on October 8, 2026.

For a current Battle Royale hunt, check the official update notes for the exact mode and version you are playing before committing to a route. The sources cited here do not establish the full Mythic and Exotic Battle Royale roster or acquisition locations as of October 8, 2026.

Historical examples: how special routes have worked

Most Wanted event, February 2023

Epic’s Most Wanted announcement described Heisted Exotic weapons held in Cold Blooded Vaults. Bosses dropped vault keycards, while Exotic Holo-Chests and an Exotic Grab Bag augment offered other event-specific routes. The named weapons were the Heisted Breacher Shotgun, Explosive Assault Rifle, Accelerant Shotgun, Run ’N’ Gun SMG, and Blink Mag SMG. These are examples of an event’s acquisition design, not directions for the current map.

Chapter 4 Season 3, 2023

Epic’s Chapter 4 Season 3 announcement likewise described Mythic weapons available through keycard vaults and a Mythic Drum Shotgun at a rifting-in point of interest, alongside Exotic weapons. Those routes belonged to that season and should not be read as current spawn information.

How to hunt a coveted gun without following an outdated guide

  1. Confirm your mode. Check whether you are playing Battle Royale, Override, Reload, Creative, or an event mode; do not assume one mode’s notes describe another’s inventory.
  2. Check the update and date. Find the official notes for the mode and season you are playing. A location guide without a version or date can describe a vaulted weapon or an old map.
  3. Verify the route in those notes. Look for the stated mechanic—such as a boss, keycard vault, event chest, or special point of interest—rather than relying on a weapon name alone.
  4. Choose for the match, not just the tier. Consider class and range, then compare damage, firing rate, magazine capacity, reload, recoil, spread, and any special effect. Epic’s primer identifies these as useful weapon attributes.

Epic does not publish a drop-rate figure for the cited examples, so there is no substantiated percentage to use when estimating how likely a particular weapon is to appear.

Fortnite-inspired real-world blaster

Hasbro’s 2026 lookbook lists a NERF Fortnite BASR OG dart blaster inspired by Fortnite. It describes a removable scope, removable six-dart clip, and 16 NERF Elite foam darts, with availability at major retailers including Amazon. The lookbook’s stated retail price is $39.99; live prices and inventory can change. This is a toy, not an exact replica of a named Mythic or Exotic gun, and its included virtual-item code is a toy feature—not a method for obtaining an in-game weapon. See Hasbro’s NERF product information.
