Microsoft confirmed on July 2, 2025, that it had stopped development of Everwild, and Rare later acknowledged that work on the game had ended. The “reportedly cancelled” wording is now outdated: the cancellation was confirmed.
What Microsoft said about the cancellation
Matt Booty, then head of Microsoft Studios / Xbox Game Studios, said: “We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio.” VGC reported the statement on July 2, 2025: VGC.

Microsoft described the move as part of broader portfolio changes, saying it was adjusting priorities and focusing resources amid a changing industry landscape. That is the company’s public rationale for the wider decisions; it did not provide a detailed explanation of why Everwild specifically was selected.
Rare acknowledged that development had ended
In a Rare update carried in a Sea of Thieves developer message and reported by Pure Xbox on July 15, 2025, production director Drew Stevens acknowledged the project’s end: “Hi everyone. I think it would be strange to jump straight into our usual updates without acknowledging the news that we’ve ended development on Everwild here at Rare.” He said the studio was focused on supporting colleagues whose roles were at risk. Stevens also wrote: “It’s impossible for something like this not to ripple through the studio and affect us all in some way or another, so please bear with us.” Pure Xbox

What is known about Everwild’s development
Rare announced Everwild in 2019. VGC later reported, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the project, that its design was restarted from scratch around 2021 and that the team struggled to settle on a clear direction even after a subsequent reboot. Those are attributed reports about the project’s history, not an official explanation from Microsoft for the cancellation. VGC
In a January 2026 interview, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan declined to discuss individual projects and spoke generally about portfolio decisions, saying: “And we made some difficult choices; some of that is the job of managing a games portfolio and a number of studios.” His comment offers broad context, not a project-specific reason for ending Everwild. Is Everwild still coming out?
No released Everwild game is evidenced in the coverage of the cancellation. Microsoft said development had stopped, and Rare confirmed it had ended development; there is no announced release date or released product to point to.
