rarext64.dll is a 64-bit WinRAR shell-extension file used by Windows Explorer. If rarext64.dll is missing, corrupt, or unable to load, repair the WinRAR installation rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
The file adds WinRAR commands to Explorer’s right-click menus and related shell integration. It is not a Windows system file, Microsoft Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or .NET runtime.

Fix rarext64.dll errors in order
The exact message may vary:
- “The program can’t start because RarExt64.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “RarExt64.dll was not found.”
- “RarExt64.dll is missing.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because RarExt64.dll was not found.”
- “RarExt64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The “not designed to run on Windows” message is a general Windows loader error. It can mean that the file is damaged, incomplete, incompatible, or the wrong architecture. It does not, by itself, prove malware.
1. Repair or reinstall WinRAR
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
This is the most likely fix when the error began after removing, upgrading, or interrupting a WinRAR installation.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- Close WinRAR.
- Close open File Explorer windows.
- Download the current Windows x64 installer from the official WinRAR or RARLAB download page. Select the 64-bit Windows package.
- Run the installer.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Allow it to overwrite or repair the existing installation.
- Restart Windows. Restarting Explorer alone may be enough, but a full restart is preferable.
- Right-click a
.raror.zipfile in File Explorer.
The repair worked if the WinRAR commands appear in the context menu and no DLL error appears. Open WinRAR directly as a second test.
If the installer reports that WinRAR is not installed, install it normally. If you no longer need WinRAR, uninstall it instead:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find WinRAR.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
The older route is Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > WinRAR > Uninstall.

Do not mix an old rarext64.dll with files from another WinRAR release. The shell extension can depend on matching WinRAR files, resources, and registration data.
2. Check whether antivirus removed the file
Time needed: 5 minutes
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine the shell extension after a detection or an interrupted update.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
RarExt64.dll, WinRAR, or the WinRAR installation directory. - Open the event and inspect the reported path and detection details.
Only consider restoring or allowing the file if it is located inside the genuine WinRAR installation directory and the installation source is trustworthy. Microsoft warns that allowing a malicious file can expose the device.
In most cases, the safer repair is:
- Leave the quarantined copy removed.
- Complete a scan with Windows Security.
- Download WinRAR again from its official vendor source.
- Reinstall the matching 64-bit package.
- Restart Windows and test Explorer.
If antivirus immediately quarantines the newly installed file, do not repeatedly restore it. Record the detection name, check the file path and signature, and investigate the detection with your security administrator or the antivirus vendor.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Verify the path, architecture, and signature
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A genuine copy normally resides in the WinRAR installation directory, commonly:
C:Program FilesWinRAR
Older or 32-bit installations may instead use:
C:Program Files (x86)WinRAR
The path alone is not proof of legitimacy. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, user profile, download directory, or unrelated application folder deserves investigation.
To locate copies, open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem -Path "C:Program Files","C:Program Files (x86)" `
-Filter RarExt64.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
For each result, right-click the file in Explorer, select Properties, and check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. The description may identify it as a WinRAR shell extension, but metadata can vary between releases. Older files may not present identical version information.
You can also check a signature in PowerShell:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:PathToRarExt64.dll"
Replace the example path with the actual path. A valid signature from the expected WinRAR publisher is reassuring, but do not treat the absence of an identical signature on an old installation as conclusive proof of malware. Combine the signature, path, installation history, and antivirus results.
The file is the 64-bit variant. WinRAR also uses a separate 32-bit file named RarExt.dll. These files are not interchangeable.
4. Confirm that WinRAR and Windows architecture match
Time needed: 5 minutes
rarext64.dll is intended for 64-bit WinRAR. Installing a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit installation, or copying a 64-bit DLL into an unrelated 32-bit program, can cause loader or entry-point errors.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Review System type.
- Confirm whether Windows is 64-bit.
Use the WinRAR installer that matches the installation you intend to maintain. Let that installer deploy the complete file set. Do not manually replace only RarExt64.dll.
Public listings may show older 64-bit records such as version 5.80.2.0, 5.40.0.0, 5.30.6.0, 5.11.0.0, and 5.1.0.0, with differing file sizes. These records are not a complete list of valid releases, and they do not identify the correct replacement for every installation. The matching official WinRAR package is the correct source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Rebuild Explorer’s shell state
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
If the file exists and WinRAR opens, but Explorer still reports an error or the right-click menu crashes, Explorer’s shell-extension registration may be stale.
First restart Explorer:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Windows Explorer.
- Select Restart.
- Test a
.raror.zipfile again.
If that does not help, restart Windows. Then run the official WinRAR installer again and allow it to repair the installation.
If Explorer crashes, freezes, or becomes unusually slow when you right-click files, temporarily disable the WinRAR shell extension with a reputable shell-extension management utility for diagnosis. Disable it rather than deleting registry keys manually. Once the extension is disabled, Explorer should become stable if it was the trigger; reinstall WinRAR afterward to restore a clean registration.
The shell extension is associated with WinRAR’s Explorer integration and a registered component identified by CLSID {B41DB860-64E4-11D2-9906-E49FADC173CA}. You do not need to edit that registration by hand for a normal repair.

6. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
Time needed: 1 minute
Do not start with:
regsvr32 RarExt64.dll
regsvr32 is only appropriate for DLLs that provide the registration entry points it expects. A DLL extension is not automatically self-registering. Running the command can produce another error without repairing WinRAR’s installation or Explorer’s shell configuration.
Use the WinRAR installer to create or repair its registration. If a support technician specifically confirms that a registration command applies to a particular build, use the exact path and instructions for that build. Do not copy the DLL to another folder before doing so.
7. Check Windows health only when other components also fail
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Because rarext64.dll belongs to WinRAR rather than Windows, SFC and DISM are secondary checks. Use them when Windows features, protected system files, or several unrelated applications are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC then checks protected system files.

Restart Windows and test WinRAR. If they report that corruption could not be repaired, save the result and continue with WinRAR repair rather than repeatedly running the same commands.
Repeatedly hunting through system files and rerunning SFC or DISM without identifying what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling WinRAR remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
8. Update drivers only for a broader Explorer problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics or storage driver can contribute to general Explorer instability, but it is not the normal cause of a missing WinRAR shell-extension file. Treat driver work as a separate branch when Explorer crashes in other situations too.
Use Windows’ built-in process first:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available.

| Likely cause | What usually happened | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Partial removal or upgrade | WinRAR files and registration no longer match | Repair or reinstall official WinRAR |
| Interrupted installation | The DLL or supporting files were never fully deployed | Run the installer again |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed the shell extension | Review Protection history, then reinstall safely |
| Wrong architecture | 32-bit and 64-bit WinRAR files were mixed | Install the matching complete package |
| Broken Explorer registration | The DLL exists but Explorer has stale shell data | Repair WinRAR and restart Explorer |
| Suspicious copy | The file is outside the WinRAR directory or has an unexpected signature | Scan it and remove the untrusted installation |
| Windows corruption | Several unrelated Windows components also fail | Run DISM, then SFC |
The failure may appear after WinRAR removal, an upgrade, antivirus activity, disk cleanup, a Windows upgrade, or malware removal. The timing helps identify the cause, but none of those events proves the cause by itself.
What not to install
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET just because Windows names a .dll file. rarext64.dll is associated with WinRAR, not a Microsoft runtime component.
Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different release, or require other WinRAR files and registrations. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder can create architecture conflicts and conceal the real problem.
Use the official WinRAR installer instead. If WinRAR is no longer wanted, uninstall it cleanly so Explorer does not retain an orphaned shell entry.
If reinstalling WinRAR still does not work
Work through these checks:
- Note the exact path shown in the error dialog.
- Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Locate every
RarExt64.dllcopy with PowerShell. - Inspect the file’s signature and metadata.
- Restart Explorer from Task Manager.
- Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for Explorer or application errors.
- Disable the WinRAR shell extension temporarily if Explorer crashes during right-click operations.
- If the problem began immediately after a known update or software change, consider System Restore:
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open System Properties.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs before confirming.
Use Windows repair or recovery options only when the evidence points to a broader Windows failure. A game launcher’s file-verification feature applies only if that specific game bundled and is reporting the DLL. It is not the normal repair route for standalone WinRAR or Explorer.
FAQ
Is rarext64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a 64-bit WinRAR Explorer shell-extension DLL. It normally belongs under the WinRAR installation directory.
Is it malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. A copy in the expected WinRAR directory with consistent metadata and a trustworthy signature is more likely to be legitimate. An unexpected path, invalid signature, or unrelated startup behavior requires scanning.
What is the difference between RarExt64.dll and RarExt.dll?
RarExt64.dll is the 64-bit shell-extension variant. RarExt.dll is the separate 32-bit counterpart. They should not be swapped manually.
Does missing this file stop WinRAR from opening archives?
It primarily affects Explorer shell integration, including right-click actions. Depending on the installation state, WinRAR itself may still open, while context-menu commands fail.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64. Repair the WinRAR installation that should own the file.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Usually, no. WinRAR’s installer should create the required shell registration. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the safest fix?
Reinstall or repair WinRAR using the official 64-bit installer, then restart Windows or Explorer and test a compressed file’s context menu.
