The file is identified as Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code. It belongs to Windows National Language Support, which provides localization and language-related data used by Windows components and applications. Microsoft documentation lists it in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 servicing packages for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems, while public file listings also show Windows 7 and Windows 8-era builds.

An incomplete or failed Windows update can leave system components at mismatched versions. Updating Windows gives the repair tools a better chance of finding the correct component files.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- In Windows 11, choose Windows Update. In Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Choose Download & install if updates are offered.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Check for updates again after the restart until Windows reports that the system is up to date.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the supported update process.
Test the application or Windows feature that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

2. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that store to replace damaged protected files, so run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows before moving to the next step.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not download nlsdata001d.dll manually. Use a matching Windows installation source instead:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual repair-source path. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, build, and architecture. Microsoft explains this procedure in its system file repair guidance.
Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting unnecessarily slow. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows repair issues, while the repair itself is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM remains the authoritative repair path.
3. Run System File Checker
Time needed: 10–20 minutes.
After DISM finishes, use SFC to check protected Windows files and replace incorrect or missing copies.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows after the scan completes.
The result will usually fall into one of these categories:

- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, confirm Windows updates are installed, and review the CBS log if the problem continues.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: try the scan again after restarting, or run it from Windows Recovery Environment if normal Windows repair is blocked.
Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC repair sequence.
4. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Security software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious system file. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file was malware, and a missing file does not automatically mean that Windows Security made a mistake.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Expand an entry that refers to the file or to a Windows system component.
- Restore it only if you can confirm that it is a Microsoft-signed Windows file or that it came from the Windows component store.
- Run DISM and SFC after restoring it.
Microsoft describes quarantine and restore actions in Protection History.
If the file repeatedly disappears after restoration, do not add a downloaded copy to an antivirus exclusion list. Run a full scan, then an offline scan, and investigate disk or filesystem problems.

5. Identify whether Windows or one application raised the error
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
The error message often appears while launching a game or application, but that does not prove the program owns nlsdata001d.dll. An application can trigger the Windows loader to request a system DLL.
Use the wording and timing to separate the two cases:
- If several applications, Windows features, or system tools fail, suspect Windows component corruption, servicing damage, disk errors, or malware.
- If only one old program reports the file while Windows works normally, suspect a damaged application installation, an outdated launcher, or an application that expects an older Windows environment.
- If the message appears immediately after installing an update, driver, mod, or security product, undo or repair that change first.
- If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may exist while another dependency or loader condition is missing.
For a single affected application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
- If those options are unavailable, uninstall the program.
- Download its installer from the developer or publisher’s official source.
- Reinstall it, then apply the program’s own updates.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Scan and repair, or equivalent file-checking feature before reinstalling the entire game. Do not replace a Windows system DLL with a file copied from the game’s folder.
6. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Windows can run 32-bit applications on 64-bit systems, but a 32-bit DLL is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL. Microsoft’s documented file listings show separate x86 and x64 versions of this component, with different file sizes.
Do not copy an x86 file into a 64-bit Windows system directory just because the operating system is 64-bit. The correct copy depends on the Windows build, architecture, servicing state, and the process loading it.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Look at System type.
To check an individual program, inspect its official documentation or installation directory. A 32-bit application commonly installs under C:Program Files (x86), but that folder alone is not proof of every dependency’s architecture.

The safest correction for an architecture mismatch is Windows Update followed by DISM and SFC. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application using its current official installer.
7. Check drivers only when the failure followed a driver change
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
nlsdata001d.dll is not a graphics or chipset driver file, so driver replacement is not a primary fix. Consider this step only if the error began after a GPU, chipset, storage, or motherboard-driver installation and other applications are also unstable.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the option is available and the problem began immediately after the update.
- Otherwise choose Update Driver, then use the manufacturer’s official driver package when Windows cannot find a suitable update.
- Restart Windows.
Hunting through many driver packages and guessing which stale version caused a new loader failure is time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and should not replace the hardware manufacturer’s support process.
8. Use System Restore if the problem is recent
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
System Restore can reverse system-file and configuration changes after an update, driver installation, or software installation without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft explains the limitations and procedure in its System Restore documentation.
If no suitable restore point exists, use Windows Recovery Environment or proceed to a repair installation.
9. Repair Windows when DISM and SFC cannot fix it
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.
If SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired corruption, investigate the CBS log and run DISM with a matching installation source. Also check for:
- recurring disk errors;
- failing storage hardware;
- malware;
- interrupted updates;
- security software repeatedly removing the file;
- an unsupported or badly damaged Windows installation.
A repair installation using matching Windows media can refresh system components while preserving personal files and, depending on the method, applications. Back up important data first and follow Microsoft’s current recovery instructions for the installed Windows release.
If the system cannot boot normally, use Windows Recovery Environment from Settings > System > Recovery in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery in Windows 10. Advanced recovery may also be available by holding Shift while selecting Restart.
Common causes of nlsdata001d.dll errors
| Likely cause | What usually resolves it |
|---|---|
| Corrupted or missing Windows component | DISM, then SFC |
| Incomplete Windows servicing | Windows Update, restart, then DISM and SFC |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify provenance, restore only a trusted file, then repair Windows |
| Disk or filesystem damage | Malware scan, disk-health checks, Windows recovery |
| Damaged application installation | Official repair, file verification, or reinstall |
| Wrong architecture or build | Restore through matching Windows servicing |
| Older application on newer Windows | Update, compatibility testing, or application replacement |
| Missing dependency behind a loader message | Repair the calling application and inspect its other prerequisites |
Why you should not download this DLL manually
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, an incorrect build, the wrong architecture, or a file with unsuitable language data and dependencies. Even a genuine-looking copy may hide a damaged Windows component store and fail because the loader is actually missing another dependency.
There is no authoritative Microsoft standalone download intended for manually replacing nlsdata001d.dll. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, System Restore, or an official application installer instead.

Why regsvr32 normally does not help
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that nlsdata001d.dll is a self-registering COM server.
Running a command such as this is therefore normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 nlsdata001d.dll
It may produce an error without repairing Windows. Use DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows component, or reinstall the affected application when only that program fails.

- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open Details and check for Microsoft Windows product information.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
- Select View Certificate and confirm that the signature is valid.

FAQ
Is nlsdata001d.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with National Language Support and localization data. A missing or altered copy can still result from corruption, quarantine, malware, or an application problem.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Do not install those runtimes merely because this filename appears in an error. Install them only when a separate diagnostic identifies a missing dependency from one of those products.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does the error identify a particular game?
No. The program displaying the message may simply be the process that requested a Windows component. If only one game fails, repair or reinstall that game, but repair Windows if multiple programs are affected.
Should I register the DLL?
Normally, no. regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM DLLs, not every Windows DLL.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It usually indicates that the file is corrupt, incomplete, the wrong architecture, improperly replaced, or incompatible with the loader’s expectations. Restore it through Windows servicing rather than trying several downloaded versions.
What if the file keeps disappearing?
Check Windows Security Protection History, run a full or offline malware scan, inspect disk health, and rerun DISM followed by SFC. Repeatedly downloading replacements will not address the underlying cause.
