Verdict: The Raspberry Pi Monitor is a sturdy 15.6-inch, 1920×1080 IPS portable display with an excellent integrated kickstand and broad compatibility with devices that output a supported HDMI signal. It is a good fit for Raspberry Pi desks, classrooms, workshops, travel setups, and occasional laptop use. However, it is not a touchscreen, does not carry video over USB-C, has no internal battery, and its 45% color gamut makes it unsuitable for color-critical work.
At the official $100 list price, it prioritizes physical design and straightforward Raspberry Pi integration over premium panel performance and one-cable connectivity. Its USB-C port supplies power only; video enters through the full-size HDMI 1.4 port.

The Raspberry Pi Monitor is easiest to recommend when the stand and Raspberry Pi ecosystem matter more than having the most advanced portable-display specifications. It is less compelling as a laptop-only monitor, where a USB-C model can often carry video and power through one cable.
What is the Raspberry Pi Monitor?
This is a conventional portable monitor rather than a Pi-specific display interface. It uses a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS LCD panel, connects to a source through standard HDMI, and receives power through USB-C. It also includes two front-facing 1.2W speakers, a 3.5mm stereo output, an anti-glare finish, and an integrated adjustable kickstand.

Raspberry Pi designed its appearance to pair with products such as the Pi 500 and official keyboard, mouse, and cases, but the monitor is not electrically restricted to Raspberry Pi computers. It can display video from many laptops, desktops, consoles, mini PCs, cameras, test instruments, and other devices with a compatible HDMI output. Raspberry Pi describes its production commitment as extending through at least January 2034, although that does not guarantee uninterrupted retail stock.
It is important not to confuse it with the Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2. The Raspberry Pi Monitor is not a touchscreen, GPIO display, DSI display, battery-powered computer, or USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode monitor.

The official specifications are available in Raspberry Pi’s documentation and the product brief. Measurements reported by hands-on coverage are rounded slightly differently, at roughly 36×24×2cm and 846g, which is not a meaningful practical difference.
Design and build quality
The integrated kickstand is the monitor’s clearest physical advantage. It adjusts to different viewing angles, locks into position, and provides cable routing through the lower section. It can also be extended for hanging or mounting use. The official product information lists VESA and screw-mount support, while the documentation describes mounting points spaced 55mm apart.
In its hands-on review, Tom’s Hardware found the stand more robust than the folding covers commonly supplied with portable displays. That distinction matters for Raspberry Pi projects: a display that remains stable on a classroom desk, workshop bench, or temporary kiosk is often more useful than one that is marginally thinner.
The red-and-white styling matches other official Raspberry Pi accessories. That is primarily an aesthetic and ecosystem consideration, not a technical advantage. At roughly 850g and 20mm thick at its documented maximum, the monitor is easy to move between desks or carry in a travel bag, but it is not an ultra-light tablet-style display.

Display quality: good for desktop work, not color-critical work
The 15.6-inch IPS panel provides a clear 1080p workspace for Raspberry Pi OS, coding, dashboards, education, browsing, and general media. IPS technology should also provide broad viewing angles, and Tom’s Hardware described the image as bright and sharp in normal use.
The specification sheet tells a more restrained story than the general-purpose image quality suggests. The 250cd/m2 brightness is suitable for indoor use but modest for direct sunlight. The 45% color gamut is the more important limitation: this is not the right display for professional photo editing, video grading, or other work where color coverage matters. There is no evidence in the supplied product documentation of HDR, adaptive sync, a high-refresh-rate mode, or professional color calibration.
The anti-glare coating helps reduce reflections, but it does not make the monitor an outdoor display. In shade it may be practical with a suitable power bank; in direct sun, the brightness will remain a constraint.
HDMI compatibility: broad, but not universal
The most accurate description is that the monitor works with many devices that output one of its supported HDMI signals and that receive separate USB-C power. Having an HDMI port does not guarantee that every resolution, refresh rate, adapter, copy-protection handshake, or device-specific signal will work.
Officially supported modes include 1920×1080 and 1280×720 at 50 or 60Hz, plus 720×576, 720×480, and 640×480 at 50 or 60Hz. The input is HDMI 1.4 and supports DDC-CI. Suitable sources can include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Raspberry Pi 4, Pi 5, Pi 400, Pi 500, and Pi 500+ computers
- HDMI-equipped laptops, desktops, and mini PCs
- Game consoles outputting a compatible 1080p or 720p signal
- Single-board computers, cameras, and test equipment with compatible HDMI output
- Older computers used with a suitable HDMI adapter
A source may still fail because it uses an unsupported mode, an incompatible adapter, insufficient power, or a problematic HDCP or HDMI handshake. The monitor is broadly compatible, but “any HDMI-capable device” is too strong a promise.

- Wide range of compatibility - Enjoy hassle-free plug-and-play functionality with the portable monitor. it is compatible with all devices equipped with HDMI and USB Type-C ports like laptops, PS, XBOX, SWITCH game consoles, No app or driver installation required.
How to connect it
- Connect the source’s HDMI output to the monitor’s full-size HDMI input.
- Connect a USB-C power source to the monitor.
- Turn on the source and allow the HDMI handshake to complete.
- Use the rear controls to adjust brightness and volume.
Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5 computers use micro-HDMI, so they need a suitable micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or adapter. A laptop with a full-size HDMI port can use a standard HDMI cable. A USB-C-only laptop needs a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for video and a separate USB-C connection for monitor power.
That means a laptop normally needs two cables: one for video and one for power. The monitor’s USB-C port does not carry video. Confirm that a laptop’s USB-C port supports video output when using a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
Power behavior and Pi-powered operation
The monitor needs a 5V USB-PD source capable of at least 1.5A for its full brightness and speaker-volume ranges. With an adequate USB-PD supply, Full Power mode provides a 0–100% brightness range and a 0–100% volume range.

With a source that does not provide at least 1.5A over USB-PD, including USB-A sources, the monitor enters Power Saving mode. The current documentation describes limits of 0–50% brightness and 0–60% volume. Raspberry Pi’s product page describes operation powered from a Pi USB port as limited to 60% brightness and 50% volume. Those figures are worded differently across the two official pages, so buyers should treat Pi USB-powered operation as reduced-power operation rather than rely on a precise percentage.
In practical terms, the monitor can be powered from a Raspberry Pi USB port, but not at its full range. Tom’s Hardware retested operation from a Pi 4 USB 3 port while the Pi used the official 15W supply and found it worked as expected. A dedicated USB-PD supply remains the better choice for a desk setup.
To switch to Full Power mode, the documentation says to use a suitable USB-PD source and hold the brightness-increase button for three seconds. A Pi 5, Pi 500, or Pi 500+ running from a marginal 5V/3A supply may cause flashing or repeated restarts.

If the screen flashes or restarts
- Reduce the monitor’s brightness and volume.
- If necessary, temporarily connect a stronger power source so the controls are available.
- Try another USB-C power source.
- Try another USB cable.
The likely cause is insufficient or unstable power, especially when the monitor is connected to a Pi or a weak USB-A charger.

The two built-in 1.2W speakers are convenient for system sounds, lessons, dashboards, and occasional video. Tom’s Hardware found that they provided mids and highs but lacked bass and punch. They are functional rather than immersive.
For better sound, connect headphones or powered external speakers to the 3.5mm stereo jack. Buyers should not treat the integrated speakers as a substitute for a full-size monitor audio system.
Best Raspberry Pi uses
The monitor makes particular sense in a Pi 4 or Pi 5 desktop setup, with a Pi 400, Pi 500, or Pi 500+ keyboard computer, or in a classroom or makerspace where equipment needs to be moved and stored regularly.
- Desktop work: A 15.6-inch 1080p screen gives Pi OS, coding tools, and browsers useful working space.
- Classrooms and workshops: The integrated stand is more dependable than a loose folding cover, and the display can be moved between stations.
- Dashboards and kiosks: Home Assistant dashboards, status screens, and similar projects can use the HDMI input and screw-mount options.
- Portable troubleshooting: A technician can carry the display to a device rather than relocate a full-size monitor.
- Mounted projects: VESA and screw-mount support expands its usefulness beyond a tabletop.
Using it with laptops, consoles, and other devices
Laptop second screen
It is a reasonable second display when the laptop has HDMI output and the user already has a suitable USB-C charger, power bank, or outlet. It is less convenient for USB-C-only laptops because video requires an adapter and power remains a separate connection.
Gaming
The monitor can accept compatible 1080p or 720p HDMI output from a console or gaming PC, and 50/60Hz is adequate for casual gaming. It should not be treated as a dedicated gaming monitor: the supplied information does not establish high-refresh support, variable refresh rate, HDR, or measured input latency.

Cameras and test equipment
These devices can be suitable if they output one of the monitor’s supported HDMI modes. Check the source’s signal format and any adapter or handshake requirements before assuming compatibility.
Portability and battery use
There is no listed internal battery. “Portable” therefore means that the monitor is relatively compact, has its own stand, and can be used away from a desk when connected to a suitable power bank. It is not cordless.
For field use, the power bank must provide stable 5V USB-PD output meeting the monitor’s current requirement. A low-output bank may force Power Saving mode or cause flashing. You will also need a video cable, and a Pi may need its own power connection as well.
Alternatives by user need
| If you need… | Consider… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One-cable laptop video and power | A USB-C portable monitor | USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode can simplify the setup, depending on the laptop and monitor |
| Touch input | A touchscreen Pi display | Better for kiosks, interactive dashboards, and tablet-like interfaces |
| Genuinely cordless field use | A battery-equipped portable monitor | The Raspberry Pi Monitor has no internal battery |
| Touch, 4K, or more size choices | Elecrow CrowVi | The reviewed coverage describes HDMI and USB-C models in several sizes and configurations |
| A small embedded screen | A cheaper 7–10-inch HDMI display | 15.6 inches may be unnecessary for compact projects |
The Elecrow CrowVi review in Raspberry Pi Official Magazine describes models including 13.3-inch 1080p, 15.6-inch, 4K, and touchscreen variants, with a price signal of approximately £92/$115 in that coverage. CrowVi can be a better fit for buyers seeking more configuration choices, while the Raspberry Pi Monitor has the stronger integrated stand and official Raspberry Pi styling. Prices and specifications vary by model.
Generic USB-C portable monitors may offer higher brightness, wider color coverage, touch, a battery, or a higher refresh rate. They may also use less robust folding covers and may need adapters for Pi-friendly full-size HDMI. Compare actual ports, power requirements, stand design, brightness, color coverage, and included accessories rather than screen size alone.
Who should buy it?
- You own a Pi 4, Pi 5, Pi 400, Pi 500, Pi 500+, or another HDMI-output device.
- You want a compact, official-looking Pi workstation.
- You value a sturdy integrated kickstand more than minimum weight.
- You need standard HDMI rather than USB-C video.
- You want VESA or screw-mount flexibility.
- You are comfortable carrying separate video and power cables.
Who should skip it?
- You need a touchscreen or built-in battery.
- You want one-cable USB-C laptop connectivity.
- You edit photos or video professionally.
- You expect strong built-in audio.
- You need more than 60Hz, HDR, adaptive sync, or gaming-specific latency.
- A better-equipped generic portable monitor costs about the same in your market.
Final verdict
The Raspberry Pi Monitor is a well-built, practical 1080p display whose strongest feature is its hardware design rather than its panel specification. The adjustable kickstand, mounting options, HDMI-first compatibility, and Raspberry Pi ecosystem fit make it a strong choice for Pi owners, educators, makerspaces, and portable workstations.
At $100 list price, it is not the obvious choice for everyone. It needs separate USB-C power, does not support USB-C video, has no battery or touch input, uses basic speakers, and its 45% gamut is a poor match for color-critical work. Buy it for the stand, simplicity, and Pi-centric design. Choose another portable monitor if connectivity convenience, touch, battery operation, wide-gamut color, or gaming features matter more.
