It provides a controller-first, full-screen interface for launching Xbox, PC Game Pass, and supported third-party PC games on desktops, laptops, tablets, and Windows handhelds.
It is not a new Xbox operating system, and it does not replace the Windows desktop. Microsoft is distributing it gradually, so a compatible Windows 11 PC may not have the feature yet.

What is Xbox mode?
Xbox mode is a gaming-focused interface built around the Xbox PC app. Instead of starting with the Windows desktop, taskbar, and individual launcher shortcuts, you get a full-screen home designed primarily for controller navigation.

The interface can bring together Xbox and PC Game Pass games, Xbox Play Anywhere titles, locally installed games, and games detected from supported PC storefronts. It is best understood as a unified launch surface—not a unified ownership or account system.

A game appearing in Xbox mode does not necessarily mean that Microsoft sells or owns it. A Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, GOG, or other third-party title may still require its original launcher, account, DRM, updates, and authentication. Xbox mode also does not guarantee shared saves, achievements, cross-buy rights, or identical controller support between storefronts.
Microsoft’s rollout announcement describes Xbox mode as the renamed version of the Full Screen Experience. The earlier name remains relevant because it was used throughout the preview period.
Microsoft’s April 2026 announcement covers the retail rollout, while the Windows Insider preview documentation explains the earlier PC-form-factor experience.

Xbox mode availability and requirements
According to Microsoft Support, Xbox mode requires:
- Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
- A device and configuration supported by Microsoft.
- A supported geographic market.
- Current Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and related gaming updates.
Microsoft began the rollout in selected markets rather than enabling it simultaneously on every Windows 11 computer. Availability can therefore differ between two otherwise similar PCs. A machine that meets the published version requirement may still be waiting for the feature to be staged to its account or device.
Which devices are included?
Microsoft’s rollout covers:
- Desktop PCs
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Windows gaming handhelds
Handhelds are the clearest use case. On a small screen, navigating the traditional Windows desktop with thumbsticks and shoulder buttons can be awkward. Xbox mode puts games, search, recommendations, and gaming controls in a layout that is easier to operate without a mouse.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
A TV-connected desktop or laptop can also benefit because the PC can be controlled from a sofa with a gamepad. On a conventional desk, however, the feature is more optional: keyboard-and-mouse players may prefer normal Windows, especially when managing drivers, launchers, overlays, mods, or productivity applications.
Tablet users may find the interface useful with a controller, although touch behavior and compatibility can vary by game and launcher. Microsoft has also expanded Xbox PC app support on Arm-based Windows PCs, but Xbox mode does not guarantee that every Windows game will run natively or correctly on every Arm device. Local game compatibility remains title-dependent.
How the feature name changed
- November 21, 2025: Microsoft expanded the Full Screen Experience preview to laptops, desktops, and tablets for Windows Insiders.
- November 25, 2025: Microsoft discussed the experience on additional Windows handhelds while PC form factors remained in preview.
- April 30, 2026: Microsoft began the selected-market rollout of the renamed Xbox mode to Windows 11 PCs.
Older instructions may therefore refer to the “Full Screen Experience,” while current Windows and Xbox announcements use “Xbox mode.” They describe the same general gaming-first interface.
What appears in Xbox mode?
The exact layout can change with Windows and Xbox app updates, but the experience is built around:
- An Xbox gaming home screen.
- Xbox and PC Game Pass libraries.
- Xbox Play Anywhere games where applicable.
- Games installed locally on the PC.
- Games surfaced from supported third-party storefronts.
- Search, recommendations, and gaming-related controls.
- Controls for returning to the regular Windows desktop.
Third-party integration has important limits. Xbox mode may detect and display a game installed through Steam or another launcher, but it does not move the game’s license into the Xbox ecosystem. You may still need to:
- Install and sign in to the original launcher.
- Authenticate with a separate account.
- Accept launcher updates or additional terms.
- Use the native launcher for configuration or troubleshooting.
The Xbox PC app can also fail to detect a game, particularly when the launcher is not installed, the library has not refreshed, the title is unsupported, or the installation is on a drive or folder the app cannot scan correctly.

How to enable Xbox mode
Microsoft’s labels can vary between retail and preview builds, so use the following as the current general path:
- Install all available Windows updates.
- Check Settings > System > About and confirm that Windows 11 is version 24H2 or later.
- Open Settings > Gaming > Full-screen experience.
- If the option is available, enable Xbox mode or select the Xbox experience as the gaming home or start experience.
- Open the Xbox PC app and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the relevant games or subscription.
- Connect a controller if you plan to use the interface from a sofa or on a handheld-style setup.
On supported systems, Microsoft’s Insider documentation identifies additional controls through Game Bar > Settings and the Win + F11 shortcut. These controls may not appear on every build or device.
A controller is strongly suited to Xbox mode, but it is not necessarily required to launch the feature. Keyboard and mouse remain useful for games with complex menus, launchers, setup dialogs, or controls designed for traditional PC input.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to return to the Windows desktop
Xbox mode is an interface layer over Windows, not a permanent replacement for the desktop. On supported builds, you can switch back using the Windows desktop option in Task View, Game Bar settings, the Windows key, or another desktop-return control exposed by the current version.
If a game or launcher behaves incorrectly in full-screen mode, returning to the desktop is usually the quickest workaround. You do not need to reinstall Windows or reboot simply because you enabled Xbox mode.

- Check the Windows version under Settings > System > About. Xbox mode requires Windows 11 24H2 or later according to Microsoft Support.
- Run Windows Update and restart the PC.
- Open the Microsoft Store and install updates for the Xbox app and related Microsoft gaming components.
- Sign out of and back into the Xbox app, then restart it.
- Confirm that the PC is in a supported market.
- Allow for staged availability. A qualifying PC may not receive the feature immediately.
- If you use Windows Insider builds, remember that preview availability and bugs can differ from the retail rollout.
Joining an Insider program should not be treated as a universal requirement for the April 2026 rollout. Earlier preview instructions describe the testing phase, not necessarily the current retail eligibility process. Registry edits and unofficial scripts are also poor first-line solutions because they can create unsupported configurations without making the feature available.

Common problems with games and launchers
Games do not appear
First confirm that the game is installed locally and that its original launcher is installed and signed in. Then refresh or restart the Xbox app and launch the game once from its native launcher.
Also check whether you are using different accounts—for example, a Microsoft account in Xbox mode and a different Steam, Epic, or Battle.net account. If the installation is on an unusual drive or folder, the Xbox app may not detect it correctly. When detection continues to fail, use the original launcher or another manually configured library tool.
A game opens incorrectly
Some applications can behave unexpectedly in a full-screen environment, particularly software that expects a fixed window size or opens additional windows. Microsoft has addressed this class of issue in Insider development, but it should not be assumed that every title behaves identically.
Try exiting Xbox mode, launching the game from the desktop or its original launcher, and updating Windows, the Xbox app, the GPU driver, and the game. Keyboard and mouse may also be necessary for a launcher or first-run setup screen. If the problem affects your normal work or peripheral software, disable Xbox mode temporarily.
The PC starts in the wrong experience
Use the current full-screen experience settings, Game Bar controls, or the desktop option in Task View to switch back. The precise label can differ by Windows build. Avoid registry changes unless Microsoft publishes a procedure specifically requiring them.

Windows S mode
Microsoft’s PC Game Pass page warns that playing games through the Xbox PC app may require leaving Windows S mode. This matters particularly for inexpensive laptops and tablets. Check the device’s Windows edition and Microsoft’s current requirements before changing modes, because leaving S mode can be a one-way decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Xbox mode versus other PC gaming interfaces
| Option | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox mode | Windows handhelds, Game Pass users, and controller-driven PCs | Third-party launchers and ownership systems remain separate |
| Steam Big Picture Mode | Players whose library is mainly on Steam | It is less useful as a Game Pass-first interface |
| Playnite fullscreen mode | Users wanting a configurable multi-launcher library | More setup and less direct Xbox service integration |
| SteamOS | Users seeking a dedicated console-style operating system on compatible hardware | It does not offer the same native Windows and PC Game Pass compatibility |
| Normal Windows desktop | Keyboard-and-mouse gaming, productivity, modding, and advanced setup | Less convenient from a sofa or small handheld screen |
Xbox mode does not replace SteamOS, and it does not make Windows function like an Xbox console. Its advantage is convenience within Windows: a more controller-friendly way to reach a mixed PC library without giving up access to the desktop.
Is Game Pass required?
No. Xbox mode is an interface and does not require a Game Pass subscription by itself. You can use it with compatible purchased games and games installed from supported PC storefronts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGame Pass is useful if you want the Xbox app to serve as a front end for a subscription library. Microsoft’s PC Game Pass page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later and the Xbox app for PC gaming, while Xbox mode has the stricter Windows 11 24H2-or-later requirement.
The official U.S. PC Game Pass page cited in the available information listed a price signal of $13.99 per month, but prices, promotions, taxes, catalogs, and regional availability can change. Check the official PC Game Pass page for the current offer. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is aimed more at people who also want console access or cloud gaming; compare current plans at Xbox’s official comparison page.
Do not subscribe solely to unlock Xbox mode. A subscription makes sense mainly if the catalog itself is valuable to you.
Who should use Xbox mode?
- Windows handheld owners: The strongest use case. The full-screen controller interface can reduce the friction of using Windows on a small screen.
- TV-connected PC owners: A useful console-style front end when the PC is operated mainly with a controller.
- PC Game Pass subscribers: Convenient for browsing and launching Xbox-linked PC content.
- Gaming laptop users: Worth trying for controller-based play, but less important at a desk.
- Steam-focused players: Test library detection first; Steam Big Picture may remain the better fit.
- Keyboard-and-mouse desktop gamers: Optional rather than essential, especially when using mods, competitive software, drivers, or multiple launchers.
What Xbox mode does not do
- It does not turn Windows into the Xbox console operating system.
- It does not make every PC game controller-compatible.
- It does not guarantee that every third-party launcher will behave perfectly.
- It does not include Game Pass access automatically.
- It does not provide console-equivalent performance.
- It does not eliminate Windows background processes like a dedicated gaming operating system might.
- It does not unify ownership, DRM, saves, achievements, or support across Steam, Epic, Battle.net, and Xbox.
- It does not guarantee that every Windows 11 PC can boot directly into Xbox mode.
Verdict
Xbox mode is a meaningful Windows gaming convenience, particularly for handhelds and controller-operated PCs connected to a television. It brings a more console-like launch experience to Windows without requiring users to abandon the desktop or their existing PC storefronts.
Its limitations are equally important: availability is staged, the feature requires Windows 11 24H2 or later in supported markets, and third-party games remain tied to their original launchers and accounts. Try it if you want a simpler controller-first home screen; keep the normal Windows desktop available for productivity, keyboard-and-mouse games, and troubleshooting.
