“Raw metal” usually means metal stock that has not yet been made into a finished component, but the phrase is context-dependent rather than a universal grade or technical specification. To buy or protect it sensibly, identify the alloy or grade, stock shape, dimensions, intended fabrication, and exposure conditions—not just the words “raw metal.”
What does “raw metal” mean?
Remington Industries uses “raw metal” or “metals in the raw” to mean metal that “has not yet been used for an industrial purpose.” That is the supplier’s practical wording, not a standards-body definition. In a shop or project context, the phrase may simply mean unprocessed stock awaiting cutting, machining, forming, or assembly; it does not by itself identify the metal, its grade, or its finish.
That distinction matters when ordering: two products both described as raw metal may differ substantially in composition, shape, dimensions, and suitability for a particular job.
What forms and materials might you find?
Stock is sold in shapes suited to different fabrication tasks. Remington Industries lists examples including flat bars, rods, and angle pieces, along with aluminum 6061 flat bars and stainless steel 304 rods. Those examples show the range the term can cover; they are not a complete catalog or a recommendation for a specific use.

How to choose raw metal for a project
- Define the job. Note what the part must do, how it will be fabricated, and the conditions it will face. A decorative indoor piece and a load-bearing outdoor part have different requirements.
- Specify the material and grade. “Aluminum” or “stainless steel” alone may not be enough. A product listing may name a grade, such as 6061 aluminum or 304 stainless steel, but the grade must still be checked against the application.
- Choose the stock shape and dimensions. Decide whether a bar, rod, angle, or another form fits the design, then confirm the required measurements and tolerances with the supplier.
- Check fabrication and service requirements. Consider how the stock will be cut, machined, joined, or finished, as well as any corrosion, load, food-contact, or other specialized requirements. Do not select a grade for a safety-critical or specialized application from the phrase “raw metal” alone; obtain application-specific engineering guidance.
- Confirm supply and preparation. Ask whether the supplier has the exact material and dimensions, can cut or customize the stock, or can procure a nonstandard request. Standard-stock availability and service terms vary and should be confirmed directly.
Remington Industries describes online ordering for standard products and estimates, customization, and procurement for other needs. Its examples can help make a request specific—for instance, “6061 aluminum flat bar” rather than “raw metal”—but the alloy, dimensions, and intended use still need to be stated.
How to protect raw metal from corrosion
Protection depends on the alloy, environment, and how the part will be used. Remington Industries advises controlling moisture and notes options including oil, rust-prevention products, powder coating, and paint. These are possibilities, not interchangeable treatments: check that a product or coating is compatible with the metal and the application before using it.
