Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuterdvgumd32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the old RemoteFX Virtual GPU, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. If Windows says it is missing or cannot be loaded, the correct fix depends on whether a protected Windows file is damaged or a Hyper-V virtual machine still has an obsolete RemoteFX adapter configured.
What this file actually does
rdvgumd32.dll is the 32-bit user-mode display driver for Microsoft RemoteFX Virtual GPU. Microsoft documents it alongside related RemoteFX components, including rdvgkmd.sys, rdvghelper.exe, and the 64-bit counterpart rdvgumd64.dll in its RemoteFX hotfix documentation.

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components normally belong under %WinDir%SysWOW64, while 64-bit files use %WinDir%System32. The exact location can vary because Windows servicing and the driver store manage protected components. Do not move the file between those folders manually.
RemoteFX allowed virtual machines to share a physical GPU. Microsoft disabled it through security updates and removed it from applicable Windows releases through the April 2021 updates because of architectural security vulnerabilities. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems therefore do not necessarily contain this DLL.

A normal desktop application should rarely request this file directly. If a random program or game reports it, verify that the error is genuine and inspect the program involved rather than assuming the application installed the DLL.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Correct response |

A desktop program says rdvgumd32.dll is missing |
Damaged Windows component, incorrect application request, or security software quarantine | Update Windows, run DISM and SFC, then check Protection History |
| “Bad Image” or “not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, wrong architecture, incomplete servicing, or malware | Repair Windows components and verify the file’s signature |
| A Hyper-V guest fails after a Windows update | Obsolete RemoteFX vGPU configuration | Remove the RemoteFX adapter instead of restoring the DLL |
| The file disappeared after antivirus activity | Quarantine or removal | Review Windows Security and restore only a verified Microsoft file |
| The error began after restoring an image or moving a VM | Mismatched guest, host, or virtual hardware state | Repair Windows or remove the old RemoteFX device |
regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer is missing |
The wrong repair method was used | Stop registering the file; it is a graphics driver DLL, not a normal COM library |
First identify which situation you have
Before changing files, decide whether the error comes from Windows itself or from a Hyper-V guest.
If this is a normal Windows installation
Note the full error text and the executable that displays it. A conventional application generally does not need to load a RemoteFX driver directly. Check the program’s installation folder and digital signature before blaming Windows.
Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as the first step. There is no evidence that those runtimes repair this particular Microsoft RemoteFX component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf this is a Hyper-V virtual machine
Ask whether the affected guest previously used a RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter. The problem may not be a missing file at all. Windows updates can leave an obsolete VM configuration that refers to a component Microsoft has deliberately removed.
In that case, the durable fix is to remove the RemoteFX adapter and move to a supported GPU virtualization design. Microsoft’s RemoteFX removal guidance explains why reinstalling the DLL or uninstalling security updates is not an appropriate solution.
Fix 1: Update Windows and repair protected files
This is the correct first repair for a normal “file not found,” “cannot load,” or “Bad Image” message.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Try the affected program again.
A pending servicing operation can leave Windows components incomplete until the restart finishes.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program or VM again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses. The official System File Checker guidance covers both commands.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run the commands again after restarting. If the same failure returns, continue to the later recovery steps rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
When manually hunting through Windows servicing records and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions are handled by the full version, but it is not required and Windows servicing remains the primary fix.
Use a matching repair source if DISM cannot find files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source rather than a downloaded DLL.
In an elevated Command Prompt, the documented pattern is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source matching the installed Windows edition and architecture. An incorrect source can leave servicing unresolved, so use Windows installation media or another known-good source that matches the system.
Run SFC again after DISM completes:
sfc /scannow
Fix 2: Remove an obsolete RemoteFX adapter from Hyper-V
Use this fix when the error affects a Hyper-V guest or began after a host update.
- Shut down the virtual machine completely.
- Open Hyper-V Manager on the host.
- Right-click the affected VM and select Settings.
- In the hardware list, look for RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter.
- Select it and choose Remove.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the VM and test its display and Remote Desktop connection.
If the adapter is not visible in Hyper-V Manager, inspect the VM configuration through the supported management tools available on that Windows Server or Windows edition. Do not attempt to add RemoteFX again simply because an old guest expects rdvgumd32.dll.

Microsoft’s current Remote Desktop Services supported configurations provides the supported context.
Removing the adapter may resolve the issue without restoring rdvgumd32.dll, because the obsolete device is no longer asked to load the removed component.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a protected file after a detection, an update, or a damaged signature check.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
rdvgumd32.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect its path and details.
Restore or allow the file only when its location and digital signature identify it as a genuine Microsoft component and you understand why it was quarantined. If the file is in an application folder, has an invalid signature, or is associated with an untrusted executable, do not restore it. Run a full scan and investigate the program instead.

rdvgumd32.dll is the 32-bit component. Its presence does not mean it belongs in every Windows system folder.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains 64-bit system files.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, replace rdvgumd64.dll with it, or use a file from a different Windows release. Microsoft documentation lists different RemoteFX file versions for different Windows generations, so a visually similar filename is not enough to establish compatibility.
To inspect a suspected file:
- Right-click it in File Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
A missing signature, an unexpected folder, or a filename with additional characters is a reason to scan the system, not a reason to copy the file into a system directory.
Fix 5: Update related drivers only when the symptom points to drivers
A display-driver problem can accompany a RemoteFX error, particularly after a VM migration or hardware change. On a physical PC, update the graphics driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer. On a Hyper-V host, update the host graphics and virtualization components through the manufacturer’s supported package.
To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant adapter.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- If Windows identifies a problem, select Update driver and use the manufacturer’s supported package.
- Restart Windows.
Do not use Device Manager to recreate RemoteFX. A missing RemoteFX DLL is not repaired by registering a display driver or forcing an old virtual adapter back into the VM.
When identifying stale drivers across a host and guest means hunting through several hardware packages and guessing which version changed, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and the manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source for a critical server.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 rdvgumd32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. rdvgumd32.dll is a graphics driver component, not a normal self-registering library. An error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found is expected and does not indicate that another copy should be tried. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference explains this distinction.

Fix 6: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
If the error began immediately after a driver installation, system-image restoration, feature removal, or servicing change, System Restore may return the related files and configuration to an earlier state.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
You can also reach it through Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs, not personal documents. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, check the disk and filesystem, use Safe Mode if a third-party security product is interfering, and review the command results. The final supported step may be a Windows repair installation or reset using suitable backups. Do not keep replacing system DLLs from unverified sources.
Do not download rdvgumd32.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows version, or a file that does not match its catalog and related driver components. Manual copying also leaves manifests, signatures, servicing records, and associated files inconsistent.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft installation media, Windows Recovery, or the official Hyper-V configuration tools instead. If Defender removed the file, verify it through Protection History before taking any action.
FAQ
Is rdvgumd32.dll malware?
The filename identifies a genuine Microsoft RemoteFX component, but malware can use the same name. Check the file path and Microsoft digital signature. A copy in an unusual application folder or without a valid signature requires investigation.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. rdvgumd32.dll belongs to Windows RemoteFX virtualization, not those general runtime packages.
Should every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC contain this file?
No. RemoteFX was disabled and removed because of security vulnerabilities. A current installation may not include it, and restoring it solely to satisfy an obsolete VM is not the right fix.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if only one game or application reports the DLL?
Verify the executable’s location and signature, update or repair that program from its official installer, and scan it for malware. No authoritative Microsoft source establishes a particular modern game as a routine user of this file.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Do not. The other system may use a different Windows release, architecture, update level, or component catalog. Repair Windows through servicing instead.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use repair installation or Windows recovery when DISM cannot use a matching source, SFC repeatedly fails, System Restore is unavailable, or disk corruption has damaged more than this one component. Back up personal data first and remove obsolete RemoteFX configuration before rebuilding a virtual machine.
