Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →readline5.dll is a GNU Readline library, not a Windows system file. When Windows reports that readline5.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair the third-party program that installed it.
GNU Readline provides command-line editing, command history, Emacs mode, and vi mode. The Windows version is distributed through older GnuWin32 and MinGW-based applications. Examples include GnuWin32 bc.exe, gpsimWin32, MSPDebug, and similar command-line utilities.

Do not begin by copying a random DLL into C:WindowsSystem32. That can install the wrong build, leave companion dependencies missing, and obscure which application actually needs the file.
Fix 1: Identify the program that needs readline5.dll
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
The filename alone does not identify one specific application. Different programs can bundle their own copy, so first find the executable that Windows was trying to start.

Check the error window
Look at the title bar and message shown when the error appears. Note:
- The application name
- The executable name
- Whether the program was launched from a shortcut, script, terminal, or startup entry
- The complete error text
If the message does not name the program, close it and reproduce the error from the original shortcut.
Inspect the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that launches the failing program.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Note the folder containing the
.exe. - Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
If the shortcut points to a program that was already removed, it may be an orphaned startup or desktop entry. Reinstall the original application if you still need it, or remove the obsolete shortcut.

Search for the executable
- Press Windows key + S.
- Search for the application name.
- Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the shortcut in the folder, select Properties, and inspect Target.
You can also search File Explorer for the executable name. Do not assume that the first readline5.dll result is the correct one. The important path is the directory containing the application executable that failed.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the parent application
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution. A program may lose readline5.dll after an incomplete installation, partial ZIP extraction, accidental deletion, antivirus quarantine, or moving only the executable to another folder.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application identified in the previous step.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options, Repair, or Modify if available.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the application again.
If there is no repair option:
- Uninstall the affected application from Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again from its original developer or project source.
- Use the complete installer or dependency archive.
- Install it to its normal directory.
- Start the program from its newly installed shortcut.
For a GnuWin32 package, use the complete setup package where possible. ZIP installations may require separate dependencies. The project’s Readline package is the appropriate source for software that specifically documents a GnuWin32 Readline dependency. Do not combine a DLL from one Readline package with an unrelated application.
If the program is portable
Portable applications often expect private DLLs beside the executable.
Extract the entire application archive to a new folder rather than copying only the .exe. After extraction, the folder may contain readline5.dll, history5.dll, regex2.dll, MinGW runtime files, or other libraries required by that particular build.
If the application’s own documentation explicitly says to place readline5.dll beside the executable, do that only in the application folder. GnuWin32 bc.exe and gpsimWin32 documentation use this type of layout.
What success looks like
The application should open without the missing-DLL message. If a new message names another DLL, do not download that file separately. The program may require the rest of its original dependency bundle, so repeat the repair or reinstall using the complete package.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus removed the file
Time needed: 3–10 minutes
Security software can quarantine or remove a DLL. The same filename can also be replaced by malware outside the intended application directory, so the filename alone does not prove that a detected file is safe.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created when the application stopped working.
- Expand a relevant detection and inspect its file path and detected program.
- If the file belongs to a known application installed from its original source, note the detection details.
- Reinstall the parent application instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Restore a quarantined file only when the application and its source are clear and you are confident that the file belongs to that installation. If the file was located in a temporary folder, an email attachment, or an unfamiliar download directory, leave it quarantined and remove the affected program.
After reinstalling, launch the program again. If Windows Security immediately removes the restored file, do not repeatedly bypass the detection. Check the application’s official support information or use a clean, current package from the original project.
Fix 4: Check the application architecture and companion files
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Older GnuWin32 packages are documented as native Win32 packages, and many older MinGW utilities are 32-bit. A 32-bit executable needs a compatible 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit executable cannot load a 32-bit DLL, and a DLL from a different build may require different companion libraries.

Check Windows architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
This tells you whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit, but it does not prove the architecture of the application. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit programs.
Check the application package
Use the application’s documentation or installer information to determine whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit. If the program came from an older GnuWin32 or MinGW package, reinstall the matching package rather than trying to convert it.
Do not replace readline5.dll with readline.dll, readline6.dll, or readline7.dll. Those names represent different library builds and may not provide the interface expected by the executable.
Also check whether the application folder contains all files supplied with the original package. A missing history5.dll, regex2.dll, MinGW runtime DLL, libgcc file, or libstdc++ file can prevent the program from starting even when readline5.dll is present.
A commonly catalogued copy of this file may show version and size metadata, but those values are not a universal specification. Applications can ship patched or rebuilt copies. The executable and its complete package determine compatibility.
Fix 5: Confirm that the DLL is not merely exposing another missing dependency
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Sometimes Windows names readline5.dll even though that file exists. The loader may be unable to load one of the DLL’s own dependencies.
- Open the folder containing the affected executable.
- Confirm that
readline5.dllis beside it if the application documentation requires that layout. - Check that the file was restored as part of the same application package.
- Look for other missing files mentioned by the next error message.
- Reinstall the complete application rather than adding DLLs one at a time.
A dependency-inspection utility can help an experienced technician, but use one only from a trusted source and interpret its results carefully. Reinstalling the parent application is safer for most users because it restores compatible libraries together.
Fix 6: Do not use System32 or regsvr32 for this file
Time needed: 2 minutes
readline5.dll is not part of Windows, System32, SysWOW64, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
Do not place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A general Windows search path
- A different application’s folder
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit Windows system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system binaries. Neither folder is a general-purpose location for a third-party GNU library. The affected application may ignore a system-wide copy and continue looking for its private copy beside the executable.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11regsvr32 is also generally irrelevant. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A runtime library such as GNU Readline is normally loaded directly by the application.
If you run:
regsvr32 readline5.dll
and receive a message about DllRegisterServer being missing, that does not indicate a new problem with Windows. It means registration is not the correct repair method for this library.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when other programs are failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Because readline5.dll is a third-party application library, Windows repair commands will not normally recreate it. Use them when several unrelated Windows applications are failing or you have other evidence of component corruption.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that the operation completed, and broader Windows symptoms improve. It does not guarantee that readline5.dll will return.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real issue is an incomplete application package. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds during a scan and automate repair with its full version, but reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns readline5.dll.
Fix 8: Update the application, not unrelated drivers
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
A graphics, printer, audio, or chipset driver normally has no connection to GNU Readline. Updating drivers is not a primary fix for this filename, but it can be relevant if the affected program also crashes because of a separate hardware or device problem.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the device involved.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a clean driver installation, select Uninstall device only when you have the correct replacement driver available from the hardware manufacturer, then restart and install that driver.

Avoid random DLL download sites
A standalone DLL download is risky because it may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, use a different build, or omit companion files. It may also overwrite a legitimate application file and still fail to solve the underlying incomplete installation.
Use these sources instead:
- The original application developer or project
- The application’s complete installer
- The application’s official dependency archive
- The official GnuWin32 package when the application specifically uses it
Do not assume that a file labelled “64-bit” is compatible. The application’s executable, DLL build, and companion libraries must match.
Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Only an executable was extracted | Extract or reinstall the complete application |
| The program was moved | Restore its original folder structure |
| An installer failed | Repair or reinstall from the original source |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Review Protection history and reinstall safely |
| A companion DLL is missing | Restore the complete dependency bundle |
| The executable and DLL architectures differ | Install the matching application package |
| A stale shortcut remains | Remove it or reinstall the program |
| Broader Windows corruption exists | Run DISM, then SFC |
System Restore is a last resort for a system-wide change, not the normal repair for an old application dependency.

Is readline5.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with GNU Readline and is normally bundled with a third-party command-line application.
Which program installed readline5.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the program. Check the executable named by the error, the shortcut target, and the application folder.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable repair it?
No. readline5.dll is a GNU Readline library, not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Restore the file beside the application executable only when that program’s official instructions specify that layout.
Is there a guaranteed 64-bit version?
No verified official 64-bit GnuWin32 build was established here. The GnuWin32 package is documented as Win32, and the affected executable must match its DLL.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Generally no. Readline is a runtime library, not normally a COM or ActiveX component.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Record the exact executable path, application version, Windows architecture, complete error text, and every DLL named by subsequent errors. Then verify the application’s complete dependency bundle, quarantine history, and architecture before trying another package.
Can Windows Update restore readline5.dll?
No evidence indicates that Windows Update distributes this third-party GNU DLL. Repair the application that owns it instead.
