Before replacing anything, identify the application that is requesting roottools.dll.

  • Which program fails: Is it Skype for Business, Skype for Business Basic, an Office-integrated Skype installation, or an older packaged Skype app?
  • When does it fail: At Windows sign-in, when opening Skype, after an Office update, following antivirus cleanup, or after uninstalling another Office product?
  • What does the error say: Does it say the file is missing, or does it say “the specified module could not be found”?
  • Which architecture is installed: Is Office or Skype 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • Where is the executable: Check the shortcut target, Task Manager, or the error’s application path.
  • Is the file present: If it exists, is it inside the expected Skype or Office directory and digitally signed by Microsoft?

roottools.dll is a Microsoft-associated application DLL. roottools.dll is identified in Microsoft update records for Skype for Business 2016, where package manifests use the name lync.roottools.dll and install the file as roottools.dll (Microsoft’s Skype for Business file list).

It is not normally a Windows component belonging in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The safest repair is to repair or reinstall the Microsoft application that owns the file.

1. Repair the Skype or Office installation first

A damaged or incomplete Skype installation is the most likely cause. Start with the repair option that matches how the product was installed.

Repair Microsoft 365 or Office

  1. Close Skype and all Office applications.
  2. On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  4. Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office installation.
  5. Select the three-dot menu, or select the entry and choose Modify.
  6. Select Quick Repair, then choose Repair.
  7. Restart Windows and launch Skype again.

If Quick Repair does not restore the application, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. Online Repair reinstalls more of Office and may require you to sign in or reactivate Office.

For Click-to-Run installations, also update Office:

  1. Open Word or another Office application.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select Update Options > Update Now.
  4. Allow the update to finish.
  5. Restart Windows.

Microsoft documents these repair and update paths in its Office repair instructions and Skype for Business update guidance.

Repair Skype for Business Basic or an MSI installation

For an MSI-based installation:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select Skype for Business Basic 2016, Skype for Business, or the relevant Office entry.
  4. Select Change.
  5. Choose Repair if available.
  6. Restart Windows.

If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the affected Skype package from the same window. Then reinstall the matching Microsoft installer. Microsoft’s Skype for Business installation guidance distinguishes the Basic client from the full licensed client and explains why the installer must match the Office edition.

Do not install a 32-bit Basic client alongside a 64-bit Office installation, or the reverse, unless Microsoft’s installation instructions specifically support that configuration.

Repair a Microsoft Store Skype package

If Skype was installed through Microsoft Store packaging:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Skype.
  3. Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Start Skype and check whether the error is gone.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove the app’s local data, so use it only after Repair and make sure you know how to sign back in. Microsoft describes this process in its Windows app repair guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm which executable is actually failing

The name in the error is not enough to identify the product. A shortcut, old Office installation, or leftover updater may be launching a different Skype executable.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the Skype shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the Target field.
  4. Note the executable name and its folder.
  5. Select Open File Location if available.

If the shortcut points to an old Office or Skype directory, remove the shortcut and launch the current installation from the Start menu.

Check Task Manager

  1. Start the application until the error appears, if possible.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Look for the Skype or Office process.
  5. Right-click it and select Open file location.

You can also check the application error in Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time of the failure.
  5. Record the Faulting application path, Faulting module name, and error code.

If another Windows user can start the application normally, the installation may be intact and the problem may involve the original profile, Skype cache, or user-specific configuration. Repair the application first, then test a new profile rather than copying DLLs between profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Match 32-bit and 64-bit components

A 32-bit application needs the compatible 32-bit version of its application files even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit application likewise needs its matching components.

To check Office architecture:

  1. Open Word.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select About Word.
  4. Read the architecture shown in the dialog, such as 32-bit or 64-bit.

For a standalone Skype package, check its installation details in Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Match the Skype installer to the architecture of the Office installation it integrates with.

Microsoft’s Skype for Business installation page provides the supported matching guidance. Do not copy a roottools.dll from another computer or another Office build. File versions, sizes, and dependencies can differ between releases.

4. Check whether antivirus removed the file

Microsoft Defender or another security product may quarantine a file after an update or incomplete installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the Skype problem began.
  5. Expand any detection related to the Skype or Office installation.

Restore a file only when you have confirmed that it came from a legitimate Microsoft installation and that the detection is a false positive. If Defender repeatedly quarantines it, do not keep restoring it. Run a full scan, update Windows Security, and repair or reinstall Skype from Microsoft instead. Microsoft explains this decision in its Protection History guidance.

5. Update or reinstall relevant drivers only when evidence points there

A driver is not the normal owner of roottools.dll, so Device Manager is not the first repair route. Use it when the failure began alongside broader graphics, audio, network, or hardware problems.

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
  4. Right-click the device and select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a clean reinstall, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and then install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. Do not uninstall hardware drivers merely because roottools.dll is missing.

Manually checking dozens of devices and comparing driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Skype or Office package remains the definitive fix when that application owns roottools.dll.

6. Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a private Skype or Office DLL, so use them when Windows has other symptoms such as damaged system apps, update failures, or multiple system-file errors.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Select Run as administrator.
  3. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Retry the Skype application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Skype again. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent application.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can show issues found during its free scan, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Skype remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

7. Do not register or copy the DLL manually

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified reason to register roottools.dll manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command:

regsvr32 roottools.dll

may produce an entry-point error. It will not repair a missing dependency, incorrect architecture, damaged Office installation, or incomplete Skype update. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

Do not download roottools.dll from a random DLL repository or copy it into System32. The file may be the wrong build, wrong architecture, modified, unsigned, or bundled with malware. Windows normally searches an application’s own directory before the system directory, and packaged apps use their own dependency rules (Microsoft DLL search order).

Use Microsoft’s installer, Microsoft 365 repair, Windows app repair, or the applicable Microsoft Download Center package instead.

8. Try System Restore only after a recent change

System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after an Office update, software removal, driver installation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs.
  6. Review the changes.
  7. Select Finish if the restore point is appropriate.

System Restore can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected point. It does not replace personal files. Microsoft describes the limitations in its System Restore guidance.

FAQ

Is roottools.dll part of Windows?

No verified evidence places it in the normal Windows component store, System32, or SysWOW64. Microsoft’s strongest public evidence associates it with Skype for Business packages.

Which program uses roottools.dll?

Microsoft update records identify it in Skype for Business 2016. It may also appear in older packaged Skype installations, but the filename alone does not identify every Skype edition or build. Check the executable path and installation type.

What does “the specified module could not be found” mean?

It can mean that roottools.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing or damaged. Repairing the parent Skype or Office installation is safer than guessing which runtime to install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no verified universal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET package that fixes every roottools.dll error. Install additional runtimes only when the application’s official requirements specifically call for them.

Should I enable something in Windows Features?

Usually not. There is no verified Windows Feature that universally supplies roottools.dll. Do not enable random legacy components as a substitute for repairing Skype or Office.

What if the file exists but Skype still fails?

Check its directory, digital signature, architecture, and dependencies. Also inspect antivirus Protection History and test another Windows profile. A file can be present while a required dependency is missing.

What information should I collect before asking for help?

Record the complete error text, executable path, Windows version, Skype or Office edition, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, installation type, Event Viewer entry, and any Defender detection name. This distinguishes a missing file from a dependency or mixed-installation problem.
