Ready or Not Censorship Controversy: What Changed and Why Reviews Fell

VOID changed some Ready or Not PC content ahead of the console launch, prompting a dispute over realism, platform requirements, and negative Steam reviews.

The Ready or Not controversy began after developer VOID Interactive changed some content in the PC version ahead of the game’s July 15, 2025 console launch. VOID said the edits addressed platform and age-rating requirements and supported a shared PC-and-console build; critics argued that even limited changes weakened the game’s realism and atmosphere. Negative Steam reviews followed, though the reports documenting the backlash do not establish today’s ratings or prove that every negative review was coordinated.

What changed in Ready or Not?

Contemporaneous reports described several edits to the PC version. They were reported examples, not evidence that every mission or graphic effect was changed.

  • Nudity was removed, and some blood or gore details in scenes were adjusted.
  • An evidence description referring to prohibited images of minors was replaced with the generic phrase “photographic evidence.”
  • An NPC shown convulsing was replaced with one shown sleeping.
  • The ability to dismember bodies that were already dead was removed. GameSpot reported that limb dismemberment during combat remained available.

PCGamesN reported VOID’s claim that the missions “Elephant,” “Neon Tomb,” and “Valley of the Dolls” were not altered.

Why did VOID make the changes?

VOID said the edits were intended to support the global console launch, align the game with platform policies and age-rating bodies, and make a shared PC-and-console build more practical for crossplay and update stability. That is the studio’s stated rationale; the available reporting does not establish that Sony, Microsoft, or a particular regulator ordered any specific edit.

Ready or Not - Day 1 Edition – PlayStation 5
  • Take Command: Ready or Not delivers an immersive SWAT experience. Equip your team with authentic weapons and gear, deploy into high-stakes, real-world inspired missions to secure locations concealing unknown criminal threats and potential civilians.
  • The Weight of the Badge: Shoulder the weight of being a SWAT commander entrusted with confronting Los Sueňos’ criminal corruption and stopping it from overwhelming the city’s citizens. Every tactical decision matters, every outcome is yours to bear.
  • True Tactical Gameplay: Ready or Not is a true tactical shooter. Every mission is a high-stakes, life-or-death operation. Strategically forge your squad of elite SWAT officers, equip them with the right weapons and gear for the mission, position your team to tactically breach criminal strongholds and quickly identify and neutralize threats in tense, life threatening scenarios.
  • Your Mission is the Story: Ready or Not confronts you with a raw, unflinching mirror of real-world crime, exposing the horrors of human trafficking, drug running, illegal arms dealing, militant extremism, and terrorism through interwoven storylines that span multiple missions.
  • Cross-Comradery: Team up with friends to stem the tide of crime infesting the city. Enhanced with crossplay, Ready or Not supports up to five players in a co-operative tactical experience on all platforms. Communicate effectively to increase your tactical precision, watch your squad’s back, and successfully complete your mission.

In a statement quoted by PCGamesN on July 3, 2025, VOID said it “we’ve only made changes where absolutely required, and only to the letter of the regulations, no further.” The studio also argued that a hyper-realistic tactical shooter faces different scrutiny from a stylized game. That comparison is VOID’s position, not an independently established rule.

Why did players call it censorship?

Critics argued that disturbing scene details contributed to Ready or Not’s realism, atmosphere, and narrative impact, so removing or softening them mattered even if the list of edits was limited. Other players considered the changes minor or the reaction overblown. “Censorship” is a label critics used for the changes, not an agreed description of what happened.

The disagreement turns on more than the number of edits: players differ on how much those details shape the experience and whether the benefits of a shared cross-platform release justified changing the PC version.

What does “review bombing” mean in this case?

Review bombing commonly describes a sudden or concentrated wave of negative user reviews tied to an external controversy. In this case, reporting linked a surge of negative Steam reviews to the announced content changes. Some players said they changed or posted reviews because they opposed the update; others called the reaction review bombing. The term is an interpretation of the response, not proof that every negative review was coordinated or had the same motive.

What do the Steam review reports show?

In July 2025, GameSpot reported that Ready or Not’s overall Steam rating remained “Very Positive” while recent reviews had fallen to “Mostly Negative.” PCGamesN also described the lifetime rating as “Very Positive” and recent reviews as “Mostly Negative,” and reported approximately 4,700 negative reviews after the announcement. These are historical snapshots from July 2025, not current ratings or a final review count. The reports do not provide a durable independent measure of how many reviews were motivated by the controversy.

How should a prospective buyer weigh the controversy?

If the disputed details are central to what you value in the game, the reported edits are worth considering; the debate is about atmosphere and presentation as well as technical compatibility. If you are mainly concerned that the PC version lost its core combat violence, GameSpot reported that limb dismemberment during combat remained, although the ability to dismember already-dead bodies was removed. The reporting does not settle how much the specific edits affect each player’s experience.
