Which route fits depends on what you have, whether you want money or convenience, and whether the games are complete. No single price applies to a mixed collection, and the organizations described below set their own rules that change over time.
Sort the collection before choosing a route
Every decision below depends on the same information, so start with an inventory. Record for each item:
- Title and platform, such as a specific PC release rather than a series name.
- Edition, since a special or limited release can be valued differently from the standard box.
- Completeness: whether the box, manual, map, registration card, or other inserts are present.
- Condition: disc or cartridge scratches, cracked cases, and whether the shrink wrap is still sealed.
Then work through the list in this order:
- Photograph the front and back of each package, the disc or cartridge, and any inserts. Leave sealed games sealed and do not peel labels or shrink wrap, because collectors and some donation programs treat those as part of the item’s condition.
- Set aside titles you want to check for resale value.
- Set aside obsolete computers, consoles, and accessories separately from the games.
- Decide which route fits each group using the table below.
Choose a route by goal

Selling and trading for money or store credit
Sale value depends on the specific game, its condition, how rare it is, and current demand. Age alone does not make a game valuable, and a large mixed lot usually does not have one simple price. Check offers title by title, then compare a few individual prices with whatever a bundle offer would pay.
Sell individually or to a specialist buyer
PayMore describes buying vintage and retro PC games. Its published description does not give general price figures, so treat any offer as specific to the title and condition you describe. Describe each item accurately, including missing parts and visible wear, because an offer can change once the buyer inspects the item.

Trade at a game shop
Fair Trade Games describes buying and trading retro and modern games at its Western New York locations. That description covers only those locations, so confirm the shop is reachable for you and call ahead to confirm it accepts your platform and titles before you make the trip. A trade may pay in store credit rather than cash, so ask how the offer will be paid before you accept it.
Donating games that someone can use
Donation suits games you want out of the house without the time cost of selling, or items that would otherwise be thrown away. Two organizations describe retro-game donation paths, and the rules differ.

Operation 8-Bit
Operation 8-Bit says it accepts old games and vintage computers, restores and resells donated items, and gives the proceeds to charity. Its published page is not recent, so contact the organization to confirm its current intake process, shipping method, and accepted items before sending anything.
Collectibles with Causes
Collectibles with Causes describes a donation path for retro games and asks donors not to open sealed games or peel labels from shrink wrap. Confirm its current acceptance and shipping rules first, since the condition requirements may affect whether your items are accepted.

Local charities and specialist groups
A local charity or a retro-gaming group may take items that national programs do not. Ask what it accepts, whether it wants games separated from hardware, and how it prefers to receive them. Do not assume a donation drop-off point will take items that were not listed on its intake list.
Recycling dead hardware
Computers and consoles that will not power on, or that are too outdated to be reused, belong in an electronics recycling program rather than the household trash. Micro Center describes recycling computers and game consoles. Triad Goodwill lists games, systems, and accessories among the electronics it accepts. Both are examples of programs that accept such items, not guarantees that every location takes every item.

Before taking anything in:
- Check the accepted-items list for the specific program or store location you plan to use.
- Separate computers and consoles from game media, since a program may accept one but not the other.
- Remove personal data from any computer, including saved files and accounts.
The examples above do not establish that a recycler treats disc-based game media the same way as electronic hardware, so confirm that point before you bring a box of discs.

Keep games that carry a personal connection, or that are rare enough that a collector would want them. Store them away from heat and sunlight, keep the packaging intact, and avoid stacking heavy items on boxes. Ask a local enthusiast or collecting group who may want the items before you pass them on. No formal archive for private collections was identified, so the people who collect these games are the most practical contacts.

What cannot be confirmed about compatibility
Whether a specific old game runs on a current computer depends on that title, its operating system requirements, and the hardware you have. Check the game’s published system requirements before keeping it for play or sending it to a buyer who may test it. A disc drive or a software workaround may or may not solve a compatibility problem, so do not treat either as a guaranteed fix.
