The correct download depends on the reader’s interface—USB 2.0, USB 3.0 or PCIe—plus its hardware ID, Windows architecture and computer model. Find those details in Device Manager first, then use the computer maker’s support page, Realtek’s official download list or the Microsoft Update Catalog. Installing a package for a different interface can leave the reader missing or produce an incompatibility error.
Why the Realtek card-reader driver is not universal
“Realtek card reader” describes a family of controllers rather than one device. Laptop and desktop manufacturers have shipped readers connected over different buses, and Windows identifies each controller with a distinct hardware ID. A USB 2.0 package, a USB 3.0 package and a PCIe package are separate driver families. Even within one family, the package can differ by Windows build, processor architecture and the system maker’s custom configuration.

The version number alone is therefore not enough. Match the hardware ID shown by your PC before downloading. Microsoft Update Catalog records expose the provider, version, publication date, supported Windows products, architecture and hardware IDs, which makes them useful for checking whether a package actually belongs to your reader.

Find your reader and copy its hardware ID
- Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager. Expand Memory technology devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers and, if necessary, Other devices.
- Look for a Realtek card-reader entry. If the driver is missing, it may instead appear as Unknown device with a yellow warning icon. A reader can also be listed under a generic storage or USB name.
- Right-click the entry, choose Properties, open the Details tab, select Hardware Ids in the Property menu and copy the first value. The first line normally contains the most specific identifier.
- Record whether the identifier begins with
USBorPCI. Keep the completeVID/PIDorVEN/DEVportion; it is what separates otherwise similar Realtek packages. - In Properties → General, note the device status and any error code. In Driver, note the existing provider and version if Windows has installed a generic driver.
Examples documented in Microsoft’s catalog include USBVID_0BDA&PID_0129 for one Realtek USB 2.0 reader, USBVID_0BDA&PID_0316 for one USB 3.0 reader and PCIVEN_10EC&DEV_5209&CC_FF00 for one PCIe reader. These are examples, not universal IDs; use the value from your own computer.

The dates in this table are package publication dates shown in catalog records, not a promise that each package is current for every Windows 10 installation. A newer-looking version can still be wrong if its hardware IDs do not match.
Choose the safest download source
1. Your computer manufacturer’s support page
Start with the support page for the exact laptop or desktop model when it offers a card-reader driver. OEM packages may include the correct custom configuration, installation instructions and the Windows 10 release supported by that model. Confirm the model number and select the correct 64-bit or 32-bit edition before downloading. Do not use a package listed for a similar-looking model unless the manufacturer explicitly groups the systems together.

2. Realtek’s official download list
Realtek’s current official list includes a PCIE card-reader package labeled V10.0.26100.21378, updated January 15, 2025, with a listed size of 17 MB. The listing identifies it as a Windows 10/11 PCIE package. Check the hardware IDs and operating-system support shown on the download page before using it on Windows 10; the listing is not evidence that it supports every PCIe reader.

The Catalog is useful when an OEM page is unavailable or when you need to compare driver metadata. Search for the exact hardware ID, not only “Realtek card reader.” Results identify the provider, version, date, architecture, supported Windows products and matching hardware IDs. Microsoft’s records identify the USB package as support for a Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader and the PCIe package as support for a Realtek PCIE CardReader.

Avoid downloading a Realtek audio, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth driver for a card reader. Those components may appear under the same manufacturer name but use entirely different hardware IDs and installation packages.
Download and install from Microsoft Update Catalog
- Open Microsoft Update Catalog and search for the complete hardware ID copied from Device Manager. If the search returns several results, keep only entries whose interface, Windows product and ID match your device.
- Compare the version, publication date, architecture and provider. Select Download beside the matching entry. Microsoft’s Catalog workflow opens a download window; select the linked file, save it to a known folder and close the window.
- Locate the saved file in File Explorer. Catalog packages may use an executable installer or a compressed archive containing driver files. Double-click an executable and follow its prompts. For an archive, extract it to a new folder and note the location of the
.inffiles. - If Windows requests permission, approve the installer only when the publisher and package details correspond to the source you selected. Follow the package’s driver-installation steps. Some packages request a restart.
- Restart Windows when prompted. A reboot allows the card-reader service and driver to load cleanly instead of leaving a partially updated device in memory.
Install an extracted driver through Device Manager
Use this method when the download contains driver files but no setup program, or when the installer reports that it cannot find the device.

- Return to Device Manager, right-click the matching reader or unknown device and select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers, select the folder that contains the extracted
.inffiles and leave Include subfolders enabled. - Select Next. Windows will install the driver only if an INF file declares support for the device’s hardware ID and operating-system architecture.
- If Windows says the best driver is already installed, compare the installed version in Properties → Driver with the package you selected. Do not force a different interface or an ID that is not listed for your reader.
- Restart and check Device Manager again. The device should appear under an appropriate reader or storage category without a yellow warning icon.
Confirm that the installation worked
- In Device Manager, open the reader’s Properties → General tab. The status should say that the device is working properly, with no warning code.
- Under Driver, confirm that the provider and version correspond to the package you installed.
- Insert a known-good SD, microSD or other supported card. Open File Explorer and check whether a removable drive appears. Use the reader’s native slot rather than an unrelated USB adapter while testing.
- Safely eject the card before removing it. If the reader appears correctly but one card is not detected, test another card; a driver installation cannot repair a physically damaged or unsupported card.
Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete installation
The installer says the driver is not compatible
Recheck the first hardware-ID line against the package metadata. A USB 2.0 ID will not validate a USB 3.0 package, and a PCIe ID will not validate either USB package. Also check whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit in Settings → System → About → System type. Confirm that the package lists your Windows 10 product or build. If all three match and the installer still refuses, use the OEM package for the exact computer model.
The reader remains an unknown device
In Device Manager, choose View → Show hidden devices, then inspect the warning entry again and copy its current hardware ID. Remove only the stale reader entry with Uninstall device; do not select a broad option that removes unrelated USB controllers. Restart, then run the extracted-driver procedure above. If Windows rediscovers the device with a different ID, search for that new ID instead of reusing the old package.

The reader disappeared after an update
Check Device Manager for a disabled device: right-click it and choose Enable device when that option is present. If the device’s Driver tab offers Roll Back Driver, record the current version and use rollback only when the problem began immediately after a driver change. Restart and test the card reader before attempting another package.
Windows installs a driver but cards are still not detected
Verify that the reader itself appears without an error, then test a second supported card and inspect whether File Explorer assigns a drive letter. If no card works, shut down the computer and check that the card is fully seated and that the slot is not obstructed. A correctly installed driver cannot compensate for a failed reader, damaged media or a card format unsupported by the hardware.
Windows Update offers a different driver
Compare its hardware ID, provider and version with the OEM or Catalog package. Windows Update can provide a generic or newer package, but “newer” does not override an ID mismatch. Keep the package that explicitly supports your reader and computer model, and create a restore point before replacing a working OEM driver.

- Download from the computer maker, Realtek’s official site or Microsoft Update Catalog rather than a third-party driver mirror.
- Match the hardware ID before opening the installer; the manufacturer name alone is not sufficient.
- Keep the downloaded file until the reader has been tested, so you can reinstall the known package if a later update causes a problem.
- Do not disable Windows security features merely to force an unsigned or incompatible driver. Find a correctly matched, signed package instead.
