Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReanimal multiplayer lag is not always caused by your internet connection. Delayed actions, rubber-banding, desynchronization, failed sessions, and disconnects can result from packet loss, a version mismatch, a checkpoint-specific co-op bug, or the game itself. Low FPS and GPU stutter can feel similar.
Update both installations first, restart Steam and the co-op session, then test the network, host, and PC performance separately. Patches 1.6 and 1.7 addressed major disconnect, synchronization, host/join, and online-stability problems, but they do not guarantee that every current session will be trouble-free.

Identify the type of lag first
| Symptom | More likely cause |
|---|---|
| The entire image freezes or hitches and FPS drops | PC performance, drivers, shaders, or system load |
| Only the remote player snaps, freezes, or responds late | Network latency, packet loss, or co-op synchronization |
| A red connection indicator appears | Network or session instability |
| Audio and animation stutter with falling FPS | Rendering performance |
| One player is fine while the other is delayed | Host/client routing or connection quality |
| The session ends after a long delay | Packet loss, timeout, or a game-session problem |
Reanimal uses a shared, directed camera, so a cinematic or camera transition can also feel like a hitch without indicating a network failure. Steam lists online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, Friend’s Pass, and Remote Play Together for the game.
Check Steam’s current feature and system-requirement listing.

1. Update both players’ copies
Have every participant update before changing router or graphics settings:
- Exit Reanimal.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Reanimal and choose Properties.
- Open Updates and install anything pending.
- Restart Steam if the game appears updated but players still cannot connect.
Both players need compatible versions. The developer specifically warned that cross-play with players who had not installed Patch 1.6 would not work. Version mismatch is only one possible cause, however.
See the developer’s official patch announcements.
2. Restart the complete co-op session
- Both players return to the desktop.
- Close Reanimal completely.
- Exit and reopen Steam.
- Have the intended host launch first and create a new online session.
- Invite the other player after reaching the multiplayer menu.
- Test a fresh session if the problem started after a checkpoint reload, cutscene, or failed join attempt.
Patch 1.6 addressed cases in which loading a checkpoint prevented players from connecting correctly, including an issue associated with the tank section. A fresh session or different checkpoint is therefore a useful diagnostic test, not merely a generic restart.
3. Test the connection
Before assuming the game is broken, remove common sources of latency and packet loss:

- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi where possible.
- If using Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and test a less congested 5 GHz or 6 GHz band.
- Pause Steam downloads and other game-launcher updates.
- Stop cloud backups, video uploads, torrents, and large browser downloads.
- Disable VPNs and gaming-network tunneling services temporarily.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Try the same section with the other player hosting.
Download speed alone does not prove that a connection is suitable for co-op. Ping stability, jitter, packet loss, and routing can matter more than headline bandwidth. The developer’s Patch 1.6 notes specifically associate high ping and packet loss with slow responses, desynchronization, and potentially game-breaking behavior.
4. Change the host
End the session and have the other player host. Repeat the same area and compare the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If the problem follows the host, investigate that player’s network, firewall, NAT, or routing.
- If it follows the joining player, investigate that player’s connection and PC.
- If both players experience the same failure regardless of host, prioritize game updates, session bugs, files, and official support.
Changing host is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed permanent fix.
5. Reduce PC stutter that feels like lag
If the whole game hitches locally, test rendering performance:
- Lower Ultra or High settings to Medium.
- Use a performance-oriented upscaling mode instead of DLAA where available.
- Cap FPS at a stable value below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate.
- Temporarily disable Steam, Discord, Nvidia App, and AMD overlays.
- Close browsers and other applications using the GPU.
- Test with V-Sync enabled and disabled.
These are diagnostic steps rather than confirmed universal Reanimal fixes. Steam lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 12, and a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 480 as minimum requirements; the recommended specification lists 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2060 or RX 6600 XT. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee stable frame times.

6. Update graphics drivers
Install the current driver from the official Nvidia or AMD driver site, restart Windows, and test again.
The developer linked many Nvidia crashes to driver issues. A driver update is more relevant to crashes, rendering instability, and FPS stutter than to ping or packet loss, so do not treat it as a universal multiplayer-latency fix.
7. Verify Steam files
- Right-click Reanimal in Steam Library.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart the game.
Use this when one player has crashes, failed loading, unusual behavior, or different results from the other player. It will not repair an unstable internet connection.
8. Check firewall and security software
Allow Steam and Reanimal through Windows Firewall. If third-party antivirus or firewall software is installed, temporarily test its network protection, then restore protection and add an exception if that resolves the issue.
Do not leave security software disabled, download unofficial DLLs, or use modified “online fixes.” They can create security, compatibility, account, and legal risks.

Friend’s Pass and cross-platform co-op
Steam lists Friend’s Pass and cross-platform multiplayer, but every participant still needs the correct, fully updated version. If only cross-platform play fails, update every platform first, restart each game, and test a new session. If only Friend’s Pass fails, confirm that the invited player installed and launched the correct Friend’s Pass version.
Remote Play Together is different from native online co-op: it streams the host’s local game and can add input delay or visual artifacts. Treat it as a fallback for local co-op, not as the preferred solution for an already laggy online session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use the Steam beta branch?
During Patch 1.6 testing, the developer asked affected players to open Properties → Game Versions & Betas, choose the beta version, enable Settings → Gameplay → Telemetry, and reproduce the failure.
Those instructions were for that testing period. Use a beta branch only if it is still visible in Steam and current official instructions specifically request it. Do not assume it is the latest fix or a universal solution.
What the patches actually fixed
Patch 1.6 addressed major disconnect and co-op problems, including stuck or desynchronized players, checkpoint-related connection failures, crashes, soft locks, and general stability issues. It also warned that poor networks could still cause desynchronization and slow responses.

Patch 1.7 added online connection and stability fixes, including a fix for Steam players unable to host or join when sessions failed to initiate. Patch 1.7.1 addressed a black screen associated with HDR. That hotfix is relevant to display or startup problems, not specifically to multiplayer lag.
The practical conclusion is that Reanimal multiplayer has received substantial fixes, but official updates do not prove that every current lag report is a known bug—or that every problem is caused by the player’s hardware or internet.
